Classic Bag of All Time: The Chanel 2.55

It does not get any more classic than this. Launched in February 1955, the Chanel 2.55 (Get it?) is as stylish today as it was 50 years ago. The bag features a double chain shoulder strap that allows a woman’s hands to be free, something common in downmarket products, but rare in luxury circles at the time. Chanel saw nothing unfeminine about keeping her hands busy, and she created clothes and accessories that matched her vanguard lifestyle. To celebrate its 50th Anniversary, the Chanel 2.55 was re-released in Fall 2005. The new version has a turn clasp instead of the CC clasp, which makes it more discrete and perhaps even more appealing.

During a night out in LA, Lauren Conrad chose a versatile Elizabeth and James dress that can be worn at least three different ways. The girl sure loves the Olsens' contemporary clothing line. She cinched hers in with a black belt to make it shorter and sexier. Though LC left behind her signature Chanel 2.55 quilted bag, she busted out a petite version. The reality star also loves her Louboutins as she finished the look off with round-toe suede pumps.

In this week's March Shopping Madness, we're moving on from shoes and honing in on bags.

Chains have consumed handbags allowing them to be the most lissom of accessories. Throw it over your shoulder, dangle it from your arm; it's as if your bag is a shimmering, clanging extension of you. For those of us who can't afford a chained Chanel 2.55, there are plenty more, less expensive chain handle bags for us chain of fools.
