Power Couple: Rihanna and Chris Brown

You know that when Chris Brown performs his song "Kiss Kiss," he's probably thinking about his hot tamale girlfriend Rihanna. Although these two stylish hip-hop lovebirds haven't formally announced their relationship, the proof is in the pictures. They are fairly young - Chris is 19, Rihanna is 20 - but have been going strong for some time now.

Seeing them cuddle in a club and kiss in a pool is exciting, but that's not what draws me in. I am intrigued by their no-holds-barred fashion sense. Between the two of them, there's so much funkiness going on. In particular, I love that they have maintained their unique sense of style. Most of us wouldn't change our style for a man and that goes for the eclectic Rihanna as well. Chris also stays true to his signature look: baggy jeans, colorful Nike sneakers, and bright hats. Plus, the way I see it, a couple that shops together, stays together!

Is there such a thing as a trendy classic? I say yes. The camel coat is back in full throttle. Designers have taken this hue and turned it into a variety of cozy styles. Take a look at Keira Knightley. The actress recently showed off her chic camel trench on the set of Last Night. I like how the longer length lends instant drama. This toasty color can be little tricky so choose a hue that complements your skin tone.

Well hello there, Rihanna. Did you by any chance check yourself in the mirror today? Here is a classic case of a person thinking more is more. I certainly appreciate the pieces in Rihanna's outfit - Matthew Williamson top, Givenchy bag, Balenciaga boots - but not so much when they're all together.

The print top, black shorts, and brown bag work well together and cater to Rihanna's funky taste. I would have ditched the Balenciaga gladiators boots for a more understated sandal so as not to clash with the print of the top. Although the earrings are a tad too oversized for my taste, I'll let her have them since she can pull them off.

Just hours prior to all the drama with Chris Brown, Rihanna attended a pre-Grammy party looking as alluring as she usually does. Seeing as she's an ambassador for Gucci, it makes sense that she chose one of the maxi dresses from its Spring '09 collection. The result isn't the bad girl we're used to seeing, but rather a spunky, modern-day goddess.

Maxis aren't anything new on the red carpet, but this one stands out because of its vivid colors. I love the mix of blue, teal, and white, and the way she belted it to accentuate her waist. Rihanna is a master at accessorizing - get a hold of those gold-chain hoop earrings, bangles, and art deco cuff bracelet. You look flawless girl, get better soon.

Fashion Does Rock

Justin's on the cover, and there's lots more where that came from. The Fashion Rocks supplement, to get us all excited for the show Sept. 9, is packed with the freshest names in music and fashion. Beyoncé, Mariah Carey, Keith Urban, Rihanna, Chris Brown, Usher, Mark Ronson, Andre 3000, Pharrell, the Black Eyed Peas, and many more will visually fuse the two arts.

One of my favorite snaps thus far is this one Steven Meisel captured of Sasha Pivovarova and Dhani Harrison, son of Beatle George Harrison. I love their forlorn looks emerging from a pool wearing furs, bohemian layers, and floppy toques. “Sasha’s clothes have an Anita Pallenberg vibe, which I love. Anita is so cool. She’s actually mum of one of my best friends,” said Harrison. Like what you see? There are 10 more pages of this to look forward to.

The Project Runway Season Five Finale Runway Show!

The grand finale of my Fashion Week was the Project Runway finale show. And what a show it was. Before the season five contestants showed their collections, it was a reunion among familiar faces. It's always a joy seeing Runway alumni gather and mingle. The recently booted Blayne and Terri were there - all smiles - and favorites like Jay, Rami, Jillian (wearing a familiar knit sweater from her collection), Chris March, and Jack Mackenroth (who I chatted with at the Jill Stuart show, he is so sweet) all made cameos. Enter Christian Siriano, who had his own Spring show the night before. Then, Michelle Tractenberg, Rachel Zoe, and Harvey Weinstein were chatting about. Quite the spectacle!Anticipation grew once Heidi, Nina, and Michael Kors all came out to welcoming applause. Side note: Are Heidi and Nina both wearing Roland Mouret dresses? They looked great, but I wonder if that was planned. At 9:30 a.m. the lights dimmed and Heidi appeared, microphone in hand. She said some heartfelt words to the people of Bravo and the Magic Elves (the show's producers) - saying goodbye and thanking them for five great seasons. To bring you up to speed, Runway is moving to Lifetime for their sixth season (and that will be interesting in itself).

The guest judge seat remained empty. All week long there had been rumblings about Jennifer Lopez being the guest judge, but it was anticlimactic when Heidi announced that Lopez was unable to due to "a foot injury." Boo. And so, Tim Gunn stepped in at the last minute to serve as guest judge. Don't get me wrong - I adore Gunn - but it was very exciting when Victoria Beckham graced us with her presence last time. Once all was said and done, the first collection, by Jerell, was unveiled . . .

Jerell
Jerell has one of the most lovable personalities, but his collection wasn't so. He came out and thanked his parents, boyfriend, and bestie, and I was really looking forward to his final collection. Bustiers, ruffles, dramatic bodices, and black and gold comprised his aesthetic. There was a regal undertone, as well as a pirate feel, but the taste level just wasn't that high. His two gowns didn't fit so well, and there wasn't a strong point of view. My favorite look was the embellished cardigan over a striped dress with sheer overlay.

Suede
Oh gosh. I really didn't like this collection. It was immature and incohesive, and the Barbie girl color palette was ridiculous. Suede claimed "Suede's going to rock it" but he didn't. He mixed plaid with pastels, ruffles with one shoulder, and shredded and draped pieces; cotton candy fabrics were utterly unsophisticated. I didn't mind the wedding dress, but that was subpar.

Joe
Joe is vanilla. His heart is in the right place, but his talent is hit or miss. Throughout the season, he's had some winners and losers, but his final works, which he claimed were Americana-inspired, were disappointing. He should have taken a more Ralph Lauren elegance take on the theme, and less Harley Davidson rough and tough. Brown leather corsets, patterned jeans, leather pants, and a navy dress with white stars were misses; a super cute paisley print dress, turquoise ornamentation, and a textured red ball gown skirt were hits. But this collection was not consistent enough to win.

Kenley
Fun, quirky and feminine - just like the girl who made it. I like Kenley, although her distinct laugh annoys some, and her Alice in Wonderland take on "her dream wardrobe" was surprisingly versatile. Each piece was unique, and yet the collection melded together wonderfully. There were a few ooh ahh pieces: the black dress with fuchsia print overskirt (pictured above), the dramatic ruffle teal print blouse and black flounce skirt, and the pink and black colorblock bodice with dramatic tulle skirt dress. Her little feathered hats, which she has a penchant for, were a nice touch. This was possibly my personal favorite - full of eclecticism - but things heated up after she showed . . .

Korto
I think Korto has the most interesting point of view, and her collection was beautifully exotic and elegant. However, there were one too many emerald green dresses, I'm just sayin.' Her collection was "inspired by nature and the landscape and clothes of her native country, Africa." She also designed the beaded and colorful jewelry (which I loved). Her color story was rich: emerald green, turquoise, mustard yellow, white, and ecru. Her silhouettes ranged from a slim halter gown and pouf sleeves to flirty cocktail dresses and asymmetrical cuts. The jungle printed banded belt frock was covetable, but a white frilly long dress was confusing. I loved the sometime Oscar de la Renta exoticism, though.

Leanne
Funny how the six collections gradually got better. I think Leanne is going to win. Her collection was as stellar as any of the professional collections from the week. It was conceptual, beautiful, and theatrical. Leanne claimed she "lost a million hours of sleep" over it, and it showed. Sculptural skirts, dresses, and gowns floated down the runway to the beat of a neutral, cool palette. The craftsmanship was expert and you could just feel the adoration in the air. I would wear the ivory off-shoulder top and turquoise petal skirt and the ivory and beige corset mini dress (pictured above) in a heartbeat. And her modern wedding dress blew Suede's off the (project) runway.

On Our Radar: Spring Sunglasses Galore

It seems anyone who's a designer is putting out sunglasses these days. Joining the list that already includes Banana Republic, Phillip Lim and Tiffany are Pucci, Balenciaga, Chris Benz, Karl Lagerfeld, Chaiken, and Jimmy Choo. Considering everyone wants to go incognito these days, it's no surprise that these designers also want a piece of the shady pie.

Pucci: This is the first time since the '70s that the label is bringing eyewear to its repertoire. The line features 19 styles in the famous Pucci colors like coral, blue, gold, purple, and black and white. It will be available this month at most major luxury retailers, will wholesale from $142 to $500.

Balenciaga: Partnering with Safilo, Balenciaga's plastic and metal styles reflect a futuristic theme. They wholesale from $156 to $196, and will land at Balenciaga boutiques this month.
Chris Benz: The young designer has teamed up with Moscot, a 93-year-old label, to design shades in colors such as peacock, orchid, and cerulean. The collection will become available on Moscot.com starting March and will retail for $250.
Karl Lagerfeld: Chanel's designer has partnered with Marchon to bring high-tech sensibility to the masses. The collection, retailing from $175 to $250, will be available at select department stores and specialty shops by April.
Chaiken: The label's partnership with Linda Farrow Vintage has produced eyewear fusing California cool and British vintage. Frames come in translucent green, brown, gold and antique gold. Look for them this Spring at small specialty stores and Harrods in London wholesaling for $100.
Jimmy Choo: Come February, get your eyes on Jimmy Choo shades in sophisticated styles inspired by vintage frames from founder Tamara Mellon's personal collection. They include a studded aviator (Charley), oversized frames in black, tortoise, gold and silver (Kat), and a square-shaped frame with Swarovski crystal studs (Rock). Wholesale prices range from $140 to $205.

Modern Leather Motorcyle Jackets

There are some fashions you put on that just make you feel cool: fabulous sunglasses, form-fitting jeans, black nail polish, an incognito trench, and killer heels. But the ultimate cool item spotted during these transitional Fall-to-Winter days has got to be the leather motorcycle jacket. As Keira Knightley and Lindsay Lohan have proven, this can be a pretty fierce cover-up. Our favorite way to wear these updated styles is over a feminine dress, the way the too-cool-for-school models have sported it. There are also more color options out there; browns and greens are a muted alternative to classic black. Check out some of my favorite finds at both designer and non-designer prices.
