Christian Lacroix's Savior

There might be light at the end of the tunnel for Christian Lacroix. After accumulating over 14 million dollars in losses and nearly facing liquidation, the fashion house received a serious bid from Italy’s Borletti Group. Borletti is the owner of La Rinascente, Italy’s largest department store chain, and French department stores Printemps. Details are under wraps but we do know that a court ruling will be held in September to review the offer. Let's cross our fingers for Lacroix . . .

2009 Fall Couture: Christian Lacroix

The looming question is can Lacroix be saved? But the show went on. In a pared down but no less beautiful Couture collection, the great French designer delivered a round of Lacroix best ofs. Spanish influence, ruffles, extravagant beading, lace, bows, draping, polka dots, and black. Makeup and hair was minimal - black headwraps delivered a slight mood of mourning. This wasn't the most optimistic collection, but longtime customers will manage to find (final?) additions to their collections. And love was in the audience - attendees sported "Christian Lacroix Forever" badges and each look was greeted with applause. Lacroix, must, survive.

Will Lacroix Be Saved?

Christian Lacroix showed his last couture collection in Paris today . . . or did he? Last Friday, employees were informed of a potential restructuring plan which would cut the workforce from 124 to 12. But now, Lacroix’s chief executive officer, Nicolas Topiol, said that letters of intent will be sent and offers from buyers will be accepted until the end of July. "The alternative is a liquidation, and that’s what nobody wants."

In the meantime, today's show at Arts Decoratifs was on a strict budget. In fact, it is being said that since models in France must be paid by law, Lacroix himself, as well as others, paid them from their own pockets. The fate of Christian Lacroix remains to be seen, but let's hope it doesn't end in bankruptcy.

The Met's Costume Institute Gala: Mary-Kate Olsen

You knew Mary-Kate wasn't going to wear something simple. Far from. She swept through the Met Gala in a vintage Lacroix gown. The draped pleated chiffon bodice over a full ruffled skirt overlaid in metallic lace and silver-embroidered bustier-basque is a mouthful - and it's certainly a complex choice. She looks like she stepped off the set of a period film; is that a good or bad thing?

Spring Couture Trend Alert: Very Pretty Pastels

Very pretty pastels dominated the Spring Couture runways this season. Notice how this light, chalky hue is ideal for showing off intricate details and gives off a whimsical feel. Christian Dior took the bold approach and dyed silk taffeta frocks in dusty blue and peach while Elie Saab played it demure with light green and purple. My fave? 2009 Spring Couture: Christian Lacroix

Opulent, whimsical, vivid - all adjectives you can count on Lacroix to bring. However, considering this is couture, the French great toned things down a tad. There's still plenty of pouf and crazy, but this collection felt tame. Or maybe I just prefer when Lacroix goes mad . . . Influences were varied: Spanish luxe, retro prom, Parisian flourish, but it was unmistakably Lacroix. Some dresses resembled exotic bouquets of flowers, while others an English garden party. Meanwhile, separates were jumbled together to create a high-end hodgepodge - very inspiring. Stacked bangles and oversize earrings were noteworthy. Then there's the bride, in her white and gold decadent glory. As always with Lacroix, I'm smitten.

Spring Peek: Luxotica

Have I ever mentioned Spring is my favorite fashion season? Hey - California girl here. It's prime time to sit back and start assembling your Spring wish list. Give your wallet a break. Get to the gym. Get ready because this Spring is brimming with Luxotica.

One of my anticipated trends of the season, designers took walkabouts on the wild side via mixed prints, sexy cuts, embellishments and embroidery, luxe materials, and punchy colors. Some standouts include Rebecca Taylor's highly femme hippie, Louis Vuitton's Parisian tribal parade, and Diane Von Furstenberg's "Rock Goddess" (I will always fawn over those head garlands). Where to begin? Rampant prints - see Emanuel Ungaro's insanely Fab gown - out-of-control jewelry, and lots of skin.

Which Inaugural Sketch Should Michelle Obama Choose?

The idea of what icon-in-the-making Michelle Obama is going to wear to the presidential inauguration is making fashion folks giddy. WWD created a story with an extensive amount of designer sketches made for Michelle and the grand event. Michelle is wowing audiences with her bold fashion choices as well as her high/low fashion sense - we anticipate watching her over the next four years. A bevy of designers showed WWD their sketches, and I narrowed my favorites down, but you must select the inaugural sketch Michelle should wear. Flip through my selections and vote at the end!

Ladies Who Lacroix

You want some fashion die-hards, I'll give you some. A friend of mine who works in the fashion department at the NY Post started assembling her friends for "fashion dinners." It is what it sounds like. She picks a designer - the first "dinner" was Chanel - and the lassies dress inspired by the designer and meet for a fabulous meal. When she shared this brilliant idea with me, I said she had to take pictures of the next one. And who was the next designer muse?!

Christian Lacroix was the name of the game, and Lady Mendl's Tea Salon at the Inn at Irving Place was the place. As you can see, my girls did it up in pink, florals, lace, vintage-inspiration, headpieces, and frilly fun. Who was your favorite Lacroix lady? I can't choose, they are all fabulously festive. From Lacroix's Fall Couture collection to NYC party girls, the French couturier's joy lives. Stay tuned for the next fashion dinner!
