Fab Ad: Christy Turlington For Yves Saint Laurent Fall '09

For Yves Saint Laurent's Fall '09 campaign, Stefano Pilati channeled the '90s with the help of Christy - no last name needed. Check out the Super, decked out in all black, standing against a simplistic background shot by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin. Christy's makeup and shimmery halter jumpsuit are very throwback, very old school - I'm not sure how I feel about it. I wouldn't think twice if someone told me this was torn out of a magazine circa '92. Christy looks like she hasn't aged a day, but the only modern element is the black leather tote. I expected a little more from Pilati; what do you think?

Fab Ad: Bally Fall '09

Brian Atwood is gradually having a heavier hand in Bally's creative vision. Right on. For Fall, the brand stuck with muse Christy Turlington, who is paired up with Oriol Elcacho. According to Atwood, "Christy is simply the perfect Bally woman; graceful, intelligent, and natural; she exudes a sophisticated ease; her sensual beauty is perfectly complemented by Oriol’s strong and confident presence." The scene, shot by Mario Sorrenti, balances architecture with natural simplicity. The couple are striding - sophisticated, at ease, and confident. I can't help but stare at Christy's belted sheer purple print dress. The ads could have more pizazz, but are lovely nonetheless. Thoughts?

Step Inside the Model as Muse Exhibit

As you know, this year's Costume Institute Gala was all about models. The red carpet and parties are no longer, but the Met exhibition - The Model as Muse: Embodying Fashion - will remain until Aug. 9. It focuses on iconic models from the 20th century, and features couture and ready-to-wear pieces, fashion photography, as well as video footage. UPDATE: Jennifer Connelly has once again been chosen by Nicolas Ghesquière to represent Balenciaga. Meanwhile, Stefano Pilati picked Christy Turlington to star in his Yves Saint Laurent campaign.

I know, Spring has just begun, but the fashion world is always a step, or should I say a season, ahead of the masses. Designers have started choosing faces for their Fall campaigns. Steven Meisel will be snapping Madonna for her second debut for Louis Vuitton; Frida Giannini has chosen Jacquetta Wheeler as the face for her Gucci campaign, which will be shot in London; and Burberry snagged budding stylista Emma Watson for its campaign. You ready?

Model Muse: Christy Turlington

Did you know Christy Turlington was born in Walnut Creek, California? That's not too far from San Francisco. But that's not why she captured my attention when I first saw her. Unlike her Super colleagues, Christy always had a down-to-earth aura; dramatic brows, crazy lashes, and big hair were never her thing off-camera. She left those dramatics to chameleon Linda Evangelista. What made Christy hang with the big dogs were her succulent lips and long nose. No matter how much makeup she had on or what crazy pose she did for the likes of Missoni, Calvin Klein, and Chanel, those lips and nose made her instantly identifiable. They're probably the reason she was discovered while horseback riding in San Francisco at the age of 13. Suffice to say, 27 years later, the Super has a resume that spans pages and pages. She took some time off in 2003 to get married to actor Edward Burns and have kids, but she's back with a bang.

Fab Ad: Bally Spring '09

For his first ad campaign as creative director of Bally, designer Brian Atwood chose to work with supermodel Christy Turlington. And why not? She's still got what it takes. Mario Sorrenti snapped Christy and male model Oriol Elcacho as a sophisticated and nonchalant couple lounging poolside in Miami Beach. Nice. The vivid colors of the lawn chair, the crisp green grass, and blue pool water serve as a happy background for Atwood's slick shoes. Do you approve of the outcome or should Atwood have gone another direction?

Best of 2008: The Return of the Supermodel
