FitSugar community member (and fitness instructor) livinginthin gives us a primer on Tabata training, a type of high-intensity interval workout.

You've probably heard the word Tabata by now (and if you haven't, you will!). So what exactly is this hot new fitness trend, and why you should care about it?

What is Tabata?

The term Tabata was coined after the Japanese researcher Dr. Izumi Tabata, who compared the effectiveness of short, very high-intensity training (bursts of maximal effort for 20 seconds followed by 10 seconds of recovery, repeated for four minutes in total) to a traditional 60-minute aerobic workout.

Who should do it?

Anyone looking to amp up their fitness level, maximize their cardio time, burn more calories, and blast off more fat in way less time. The key to a successful Tabata session is being able to hit the high levels of intensity (the participants in the Tabata study worked at 170 percent of their VO2 Max - that's killer!). If you are new to exercise, or returning after a long hiatus, you may want to progress slowly with trying a Tabata workout.

No need to be nervous about taking your fitness class: FitSugar community member (and fitness instructor) livinginthin has some helpful tips to help you navigate your way through the workout.

Did you just join a gym? Good for you! Group fitness classes can be a fun and effective way to get into an exercise program, but venturing into that loud, crowded room for the first time can be pretty intimidating! As an instructor for the past ten years, I’ve seen many first timers take a class once and never come back. If you are just starting out, here are a few tips to ensure a successful experience in the group exercise studio (and keep you coming back for more):

Let me know it’s your first time: A good instructor should be available a few minutes before class (either in the hall or in the room), so please be sure to let us know it’s your first time. We may be able to give you some tips on how to get the most out of the day’s workout, tell you what equipment you’ll need, etc.

Stand in the middle of the room.: If you are new to class, I need to see you to watch your form, so please don’t hide in the back row. On the same token, don’t stand in the front row either - you’ll want to be able to follow some seasoned exercisers, and the front row usually consists of regulars who have been taking the class for years, and can be very helpful to visually follow when I am walking around the room to help students.

Here are some of the best reasons to exercise when you are pregnant, which I have gathered from a variety of sources.

Better psychological wellbeing
Reduced incidence of gestational diabetes
Decreased incidence of preclampsia
Reduced lower back pain
Improved weight management
Improved fetal development
Easier or shorter labor
Decreased risk of premature labor
Greatly reduced incidence of abdominal surgery during delivery

Of course, it’s important to modify your workout to accommodate and support the pregnancy. But that doesn’t mean you can’t work out as hard. Maintaining the workout intensity you had going into your pregnancy is exactly what you want to do. It’s not time to start a new program. It is time to work the core in three planes of motion to strengthen the abdominals for pushing during labor. When I work with expecting moms at my training facility at the Bentley Reserve in downtown San Francisco, I advise them according to the following parameters.

10 Money Rules For Young People Entering the Workforce

When I first graduated, I did some things right with my money (lived cheaply, didn't get into a lot of debt), but I also did some things wrong (didn't ask for raises, borrowed too much money from my parents, didn't save any money for several years). If you're graduating and just starting off, here's some money tips to get you started, from someone who went through what the young graduates of today are going through.

Don't pretend your student loans don't exist

I'm not saying you should become overly worried about your loans right after you graduate, but don't pretend they don't exist! You usually have a six-month interest-free deferment period before you have to start repaying them, so take that time to get organized. Figure out what your monthly payments will be, and start taking the steps to be prepared to repay them when the time comes. Bundle has many articles for dealing with student loan debt, so be sure to read about them if you need extra help.

Don't spend big money going out every night on food and drinks

This is definitely the time of your life to live it up as a twenty-something, but it's also not the best idea to spend all your extra income at the bar every night. You would be surprised how much money you'll save by limiting how much you spend at restaurants and bars. Find ways to live it up for less: Throw house parties, potlucks, brunches, and when you do go out, have the $2 PBR instead of the $8 cocktail - at least sometimes.

Victoria Beckham Settles Into London With Baby Harper

Victoria Beckham hopped into the passenger's seat this evening when she left her London hotel. Over the weekend, Victoria Beckham and her daughter Harper Seven left LA and headed to the mom of four's native Britain once baby Harper got her first passport. There are rumors today that the Beckhams may once again make Europe their home. David Beckham is in talks with Paris St. Germain, according to reports, and could sign on to play with the French soccer team next season. Former LA Galaxy coach Ruud Gullit believes David will go abroad again. Gullit said, "Paris Saint-Germain is a great club with an ambitious project so that would be a very good and interesting move for him. I know how he thinks; he will want the challenge. . . . Beckham is obsessed with football and, in Los Angeles, there is no football culture. They care about other things."

Win Win: It's a Winner

Win Win has all the necessary elements for a great indie film: a down-on-his-luck central character, a strong cast, and a quirky but heartwarming comeback story told with humor. Though it's a smaller film, Win Win appeals to a wider audience with its charm.

Paul Giamatti stars as small-town attorney/high school wrestling coach, Mike Flaherty. Stuck with a struggling legal practice (and a bad hot-water heater), Mike is cutting costs to keep his business afloat while still providing for his wife Jackie (Amy Ryan) and his young daughters. When one of Mike's elderly clients needs a guardian to provide for his care, Mike takes on the job to make some extra cash. But when the man's grandson Kyle (Alex Shaffer) unexpectedly shows up, Mike becomes way more involved in the family's life than he bargained for.

read more. Kyle is a high school kid with bleached hair and back tattoos (Jackie calls him Eminem). After his mom (Melanie Lynskey) winds up in rehab, he flees home to track down the grandpa he's never met and encounters Mike instead. Mike takes Kyle in, and he starts bringing him along to his wrestling practices. The teenager proves to be star on the mat, and Mike finally eyes the opportunity to give his ragtag high school team a chance at ending their losing streak. Writer and director Thomas McCarthy (The Visitor, The Station Agent) gives the actors great material to work with, and the entire cast rises to the occasion. Mike is, by nature, a good guy who makes some wrong choices. Kyle's mom is an addict who's only out for herself, but we also get glimpses of her genuine remorse for her lack of parenting skills. The dynamic between Mike and his two closest friends played Bobby Cannavale and Jeffrey Tambor are especially hilarious. Win Win isn't just a film about a flailing wrestling team. It's about human connection, family, and the importance of doing the right thing. It's these larger themes that really take the film beyond being another underdog story.

One Fit Job: High School Coach

There are many people who don't like sitting at a desk working their days away but there are few that take initiative to do something about it. After working for a Manhattan hedge fund for four years, spitfire Ann Moody decided to give up her financial career track and focus on what makes her happy - spending time with kids and doing it outdoors.

Voted athlete of the year at her alma mater, Ann could school her students in just about any sport. An accomplished marathoner, and beast on the turf, she's no doubt imparting some well-earned knowledge to her students on the playing field while enjoying every minute of it. I recently had the chance to sit down with the gorgeous gammed gal and ask her a few things about her life as a high school coach. Be forewarned, reading this bit may push you to turn in your key card for a locker room!

FitSugar: What is your athletic background?
Ann Moody: I played field hockey, soccer, and softball in high school; field hockey for a year at CU at the club level. Too many other things to do there. I love skiing and playing golf and, in general, just trying to stay as active as possible. I am studying to get my Master’s in Physical Education with an emphasis on Sport and Fitness Administration.

FS: How long have you had this career?
AM: This is my second year coaching field hockey. This Winter and Spring will be my second season for soccer and softball.

FS: What made you want to go into this career?
AM: I love sports . . . I love competition and I like seeing results. In my opinion, being outside with the kids beats sitting at a desk all day.

FS: What’s your favorite part about your job?
AM: Working with young, talented athletes is definitely my favorite part of the job. We sent two seniors to play field hockey at the Division I college level last year and will probably send more this year. Having the opportunity to be around competition and being in a position to help girls develop their talent is also just a ton of fun.
