The Wondrous Histogram: 3 Ways It Can Improve Your Photos

On most digital cameras, there's a handy way to measure the brightness of a photo. Called a histogram, it's a graph usually found within the menu settings and displayed on the LCD screen, and it records the brightness level of each photo.

In the picture above, the horizontal axis shows the brightness level, while the vertical axis indicates the number of pixels for each brightness level. Hence, the taller the bar, the more pixels at that brightness level. A graph with equal points throughout is a sign of a balanced, properly exposed photo. If most of the bars on the graph are clumped toward the right, then the photo is too bright or overexposed. Conversely, if most of the graph points are clumped to the left of a histogram, then the photo is too dark.

Regularly checking your camera's histogram to balance the light meter when shooting pictures will lessen the need for later editing. However, histograms do work wonders for changing brightness levels in Photoshop and phone apps. Check out three ways to use histogram below.

On an SLR camera: Check the camera's manual for instructions on how to view the histogram on the camera's LCD display. Viewing the histograms will help determine patterns in exposure. Use a manual setting to adjust the ISO, white balance, and aperture settings until the light meter and histogram are balanced.
On an iPhone: Iris Photo Suite ($2) is a great photo-editing app. Upload a photo, and tap "Adjustments" then "Histogram" to view the photo's histogram. Adjust the brightness levels manually, or use the "Magic Touch" button for an auto-adjustment.
In Photoshop: Photoshop's histogram allows you to view a variety of different histograms, including all colors, luminosity, RGB, or specific colors. Edits done by eye can't always be trusted, so these graphs are handy, especially when altering the photo's white balance or brightness levels.

The annual Met Gala in NYC on Monday night didn't disappoint, with famous faces from the big and small screens, the music industry, and the fashion world all stepping out in their finest. Carey Mulligan, one of the evening's hosts, showed up in a metallic Prada frock in honor of the exhibit, Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations. Diane Kruger also chose a gown by Prada, as did Gwyneth Paltrow. Gwyneth was one of many ladies who went short for the fashionable soiree, along with Kristen Stewart in Balenciaga and Emma Stone in a leg-baring red Lanvin.

Color was also a trend, with January Jones choosing a strapless yellow Versace and Emily Blunt in coral Calvin Klein. Emily brought her husband John Krasinski to the bash, but she wasn't the only one with her man by her side. Buying Guide: Find the Best Planters For Your Garden

Like a great tailored jacket over a casual ensemble, the right planters can instantly "pull together" any outdoor garden space. (Even if it's the size of a postage stamp.) However, getting the right one can be tricky. Planters like metal ones hold water better than porous containers made out of wood, while lightweight plastic pieces are not the sturdiest choice for larger plants. So, we've rounded up the basics you should know about planters.

Keep in mind that the style and size of your planter depends on your garden and the type of plant you're looking to use it for. But, if you're looking for one to amp up the look in your garden, here are some very general things remember when shopping for planters.

A good size. Generally, a good size planter is one that can hold a healthy amount of soil for the plant and also allow room for roots to grow. And, you should see more of the flowering plant than the planter. So, generally a good-sized container is one where the plant is about two times more visible than the actual pot itself.

Consider the materials. Planters made from wood and metal are affordable and easy to move around. Wood is porous so it provides better drainage (since it soaks up water) and it's also more resistant to the elements than metal, which may rust over time. Also, wood planters are generally not used for planting inside directly. Instead, they're great for concealing plastic pots. Because wood planters are so porous, they can get mildewed if not carefully cleaned. But if you have a plant that requires a lot of water, go with metal or plastic, which will keep the water from evaporating. However, metal (as well as dark color planters) absorb more heat, so you'll have to keep a close eye on the plants to make sure the soil doesn't dry out completely. If you're looking to really amp up the look in your garden, go with ceramic or terra-cotta planters, which come in an array of colors. However, these are usually more expensive and are most breakable out of all the materials. On the contrary, lightweight plastic planters are the most cost-effective, but they're also the least sturdy, meaning they're not best-suited for heavier plants nor hold up in harsh weather.
