Meet Dash, Condé Nast's Latest Food Magazine

Yesterday, Condé Nast announced plans to introduce its first new food magazine since the collapse of Gourmet.

Dash will be a newspaper insert magazine, the result of a collaboration between Parade and Bon Appétit, which are both owned by Condé Nast's parent Advance Publications. It will launch online at dashrecipes.com in September, drop a preview print issue in November, and begin its regular monthly circulation to about eight million readers via 100 different newspapers in February.

With the proposed tagline of "Simple. Fast. Delicious." Dash is meant to appeal to a mainstream audience.

It will contain recipes from Parade and Bon Appétit, as well as content from Epicurious and the Gourmet archives. Unlike Gourmet, it's taken on an unabashedly aggressive approach toward appealing to packaged food companies such as ConAgra and Kraft.

Dash will compete directly with Relish, another food newspaper insert, as well as traditional magazines such as Family Circle. Thus, if you've been hoping for a Condé Nast equivalent of Gourmet, you won't be getting it anytime soon. Will you look out for it?

You Asked: Ways to Get High Blood Pressure Under Control

Did you know that while most Americans with high blood pressure are taking steps to combat the potentially deadly condition, only 30 percent have it under control?

If you or someone you love has hypertension, there are several steps you can take to help keep it under control:

Try the D.A.S.H. eating plan: DASH stands for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension and it is an eating plan that emphasizes fruits, vegetables, and lowfat dairy foods. It is low in saturated fat, total fat and cholesterol. The DASH eating plan includes whole grains, poultry, fish, and nuts and has reduced amounts of fats, red meats, sweets, and sugared beverages.
Exercise: Get started by doing 30 minutes of a moderate-level activity on most, and preferably all, days of the week. Brisk walking, bicycling, and gardening are examples. You can even divide the 30 minutes into shorter periods of at least 10 minutes each.
Reduce Salt intake: For someone with high blood pressure, the doctor may advise eating less salt and sodium, as recent research has shown that people consuming diets of 1,500 mg of sodium (that's a little more than 1/2 teaspoon of salt) had even better blood pressure lowering benefits.
Lay off the Booze: If you drink alcoholic beverages, have only a moderate amount - one drink a day for women; two drinks a day for men.
Smoking: DON'T SMOKE. If you do, QUIT!
Lose the extra LBS: Being overweight increases your risk of developing high blood pressure. In fact, blood pressure rises as body weight increases. Losing even 10 pounds can lower blood pressure - and it has the greatest effect for those who are overweight and already have hypertension.
Medicate: Your doctor can prescribe a medication to lower your blood pressure, especially if you're doing everything listed above but still can't control hypertension.

Let's Dish: What's Your Go-To Seasoning?

Sometimes I follow recipes to the letter, but most of the time I stick to preparations that allow me to absentmindedly add a pinch of this and a dash of that to achieve a perfectly seasoned plate. There are, of course, the basics like salt and pepper, but more often than not, I find myself reaching for the bottle of fish sauce. This umami-laden Southeast Asian staple made from fermented fish may sound like an odd ingredient for pasta dishes or salad dressings, but its saltiness and - I'm just going to say it - stinkiness provide an interesting slant on what would otherwise be a run-of-the-mill dish.

So how do you make your marriage work? Or do you just blindly hope it'll take care of itself?

Think of a hot, successful date with someone you’re attracted to. You have fun, great conversation and more sexual chemistry than a warehouse full of pheromones. You don’t have to “work at” the date because it’s self sustaining. It runs as smoothly as the gliding hand of a classical guitar maestro and you can’t wait for another rendition.

But marriage, or any long term relationship; well that’s a whole other caboodle.

If we’re not careful, marriage can deteriorate into little more than a torturous assault course; littered with routine boredoms, frustrations and resentments. Couple all that with external pressures and sometimes marriage feels not worth the effort. But there are major benefits to being hitched or committed, other than just a beneficial tax regime.

Healthy marriage; healthy people.

Being happily married bestows heaps of health benefits. You might be forgiven for thinking that if you’re married you don’t live longer it just seems like it but, no, a good marriage really can help you clock up more years (1) and married people are happier (2) even though they don’t always look it from the outside.

But when marriage doesn’t work it can feel being manacled to a maniac, marooned with a misogynist or nailed to a nag. And I don’t care what the studies say, that’s not healthy. You may hear couples say stuff like: “We are making our marriage work!” but how do we do this?

Making it work.

We pay lip service to “working on the marriage” but what is the work we need to do? Marriage vows such as “to love and to cherish” and “forsaking all others, for better or for worse” don’t really tell us how to make it work, although they give us a clue.

Fortunately a ton of research has been done on what to do and not do to make your marriage, or any intimate relationship work. Follow the guidelines here to become “good at marriage."

Tip one: Be romantic but keep it real.

We are all (force?) fed romance in movies and novels. The handsome man gets the beautiful woman. But what I wonder is what happens after our romantic couple ride off into the sunset together? What do they do exactly? Bicker? Moan at one another? Start to ignore each other?

After all that romance, our beautiful couple is bound to have massive expectations of their life together. But when rose tinted expectations clash with day to reality, watch out!

Romance is vital in any relationship. Always seeing the best in your partner helps to keep things intimate and love should be expressed. But if you have been raised on Mills and Boon Romance novels or feel-good movies, then your own romantic expectations can work against the sustainability of your long term relationship.

When day to day life fails to live up to the giddy, heady lust-filled days of the pre-settled down romance people can become angry, even blame one another: “This wasn’t what I signed up for." They find it hard to take the rough with the smooth because they never really figured there would be any rough.

Expectations not diluted with at least a dash of realism can be a royal road to relationship ruin. Your partner may be an angel, but they have feet of clay. You must learn to love those feet or at least accept them a bit!

A Hollywood Hills Home Gets a Total Makeover in Just Six Weeks: See the Stunning Results

Six weeks is the blink of an eye when it comes to completing an interior design project, yet that was the time frame allotted for SFA Design when they redesigned a second home for the family of an international ambassador. Founder of SFA Design, Sue Firestone, told us that the quick turnaround was an absolute must. "We had a short time frame to complete the design and installation as the family was going to be visiting the states and needed a place to stay."

The results are nothing short of spectacular, both inside and out. This Hollywood Hills home went from drab to elegant in a short month and a half, thanks to the expertise of SFA Design. Sue Firestone went on to note that the firm had a very specific agenda for the feel of the home. "Since this is a “vacation home” we wanted it to feel serene and calm. The grays and taupes, in their monochromatism are very peaceful but there is an added dash of elegance and glamour in the crystals, mirrors and shimmers."

Hash It Out With Sweet Potatoes

Everyone's had potato hash browns - either in patty form at McDonald's, from a mother's stove, or in an American diner where the dish is served up around the clock. One Sunday morning, I awoke with a hankering for hash browns, but I didn't have any potatoes on hand, only sweet potatoes. I figured sweet potatoes make great fries, so why not hash browns?

If you want to pay homage to your grandmother, you can grate the potatoes manually on a grater; for me, my trusty food processor made the job much easier. And with it already out, finely chopping my onions in it left me with less tears too.
With those two ingredients prepped, the cooking process was pretty simple. Don't be tempted to turn them over constantly: if you love a crispy hash brown, just let them sit. Once they start to turn golden brown, carefully flip them over in one pancakelike, solid piece to cook the other side. Since sweet potatoes have more sugar than conventional potatoes, I added ground pepper and thinly sliced chives to cut some of the sweetness. If you're a spicy and sweet fan, add a dash of hot sauce for a bit more kick. Serve alongside your favorite style of fried egg and oven-baked bacon for a perfect Sunday breakfast. Hick Trailer: Chloe Moretz Has a Chip on Her Shoulder and a Gun in Her Hand

Chloe Moretz is quite the spitfire in the new red-band trailer for Hick. Abandoned by her father (probably for the better), Moretz's character, Luli McMullen, spends a few minutes contemplating her next move before hitting the road. Destination: Las Vegas. What a great place for a newly orphaned teenage girl! With nothing but a backpack and a loaded pistol in her possession, Luli starts hitchhiking her way there. Along the way, she befriends a kindly drug addict, played by Blake Lively, and the two embark on what looks like a crazy dangerous adventure.

The poster for Hick came out a few weeks ago, but it's nice to finally see Moretz and Lively in action. We've been a fan of Moretz's since we first took note of her ass-kicking skills a couple years ago in Kick-Ass, and this role recalls the unexpected fierceness she displayed as Hit-Girl, only with a dash of Clint Eastwood this time. The movie comes out in theaters and VOD May 11, but let us know what you think when you watch the trailer after the jump.
