A Drugstore Version of Dirt

I've already waxed poetic about the magical, sweet-smelling hair styling paste that is Dirt by Jonathan Product. As Jonathan (from the reality show Blowout) explains on the label: “There’s something amazing about the way hair looks and behaves the day after - washing, that is." Seeing as how I'm obsessed with Dirt, I couldn't help but notice a suspiciously similar product while browsing the aisles the other day at Walgreens. Called FX Special Effects Texture Dirt Texturizing Paste, this styling paste proclaims: "Texture Dirt has been created to easily give you the amazing way your hair looks and behaves the day after washing."

Sound familiar? Since the FX brand has obviously been paying attention to Dirt's copy-writing, I bought a jar to see if it had replicated the styling effect, too. Plus, the Texture Dirt, available here costs just $5.99, versus $26 for the Jonathan product. However, after trying the FX brand, I think I'm going to stay loyal to Jonathan. The drugstore stuff wasn't terrible for a budget buy, but it had a more glue-like texture that made it hard to disperse though my hair. Although it gave my hair similar piece-y results, it didn't leave my locks looking or feeling nearly as smooth and silky as the Dirt by Jonathan does. I guess you get what you pay for.

The Dirty-Hair Look Without the Dirt

The description on each tub of Dirt by Jonathan Product is refreshingly blunt. Writes Jonathan, the line's celebrity namesake, “There’s something amazing about the way hair looks and behaves the day after - washing, that is. I created Dirt to help you get that look easily.” Though Jonathan can be quite annoying on the Bravo reality show Blowout, he’s absolutely right about this sweet, sticky nectar, available here for $26.

Used on dry locks, the texturizing paste gives hair that FABulous piece-y look without making it look or feel greasy, and Dirt is equally adept at finessing short fine hair or weighing down long, thick styles for a tousled look. Plus, its toasted-marshmallow scent will leave your hair smelling much better than if you went for the dirty look the natural way.

DSquared's Camp Chic: Love It or Hate It?

DSquared always amuses. Their hodgepodge style draws inspiration from some of the most random places. For Spring, the twin bros were inspired by the great outdoors. Camping, to be specific. Last season it was the paparazzi prone PYTs of Hollywood, and I loved the layering and cheeky accessories. There are fashion-loving girls who don't mind the dirt and insects that come with tough terrain, but when did trucker hats get cute again? Adversely, the plaids, cat-eye specs, Band-Aids, glittering bracelets, and bottles, are fabulous touches. The splattered purple dress is rugged chic at its best. Are you feeling it?

Trend Alert: Shine Bright, Shine White

Now is the time to show off your perfect pedi in a pair of white sandals. I know, such immaculate shoes are hard to keep up, but if you're willing to sacrifice a little time and care, I guarantee you ultimate satisfaction. I can already picture these textured Loeffler Randall Genevieve Sandals ($333, originally $475) with a black bandage mini and simple tee. Hot, right? Here's a tip: if dirt seems to follow you everywhere, look for white sandals with dark bottoms. Shine bright, shine white . . .

Fab Ad: Balmain Spring '09

For Spring '09, Balmain clashed two cultures: the Wild West and the rockin' 80s. The campaign, shot by Inez van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin, depicts a stark, deserted diner in the background with Daria Werbowy posing hard in the forefront wearing Balmain's famous drummer boy coat, ripped to perfection jeans, and studded sandals. The juxtaposition between the two different worlds is interesting and I kind of like the dusty, dirt road against Balmain's sick, Spring offerings. But wait - isn't it a similar concept to Daria in the desert in Isabel Marant's latest ad? Hmmm . . .
