Somewhere, Marlene Dietrich is smiling. Donna Karan's Fall 2012 collection gave menswear a seductive turn, somehow making the double-breasted suit look just as sexy as the fitted dresses. Whereas past collections felt as loose and languid as a yoga pose, this latest collection was all about sharp tailoring and even sharper edges. Blazers had pointed shoulders, tops had extra wide, stiff cuffs, and skirts and dresses were folded and gathered like the face of a Frank Gehry building. There was lots of structure, and it seemed that Karan is making a strong argument for the '90s power suit. Models were adorned with miniature fedoras - thank you, Stephen Jones - giving the show a slightly playful and sexy undertone, as if they were Vegas dancers playing businesswomen. That said, Donna Karan also paid tribute to Whitney Houston, and the show closed with the late singer's rendition of "I'm Every Woman." No one knows that better than Karan. Side note: the show opened with a preview of her Casual Luxe line, which could be summed up as tartan-loving biker chick. Those looks follow the collection photos.

Dedicated to the Beat Generation, DKNY Fall 2012 showed a collection filled with strong silhouettes, pretty details, and even some shearling and fur. Designed with a city girl in mind, these seemed dedicated to the working city girl - skirt and jacket looks were belted for a crisp look, and coats were edged in leather. Ashley Greene, Nina Dobrev, and Coco Rocha were seated in the front row, watching the models come in literally off the street - the show was sat in a cavernous garage-like space with double-doors that opened out onto the sidewalk, allowing the models to walk in. Minus the fact that it was freezing out, it made for an energetic show.

Trends: ladylike, fur details, leather sleeves, florals.
Colors: Black, gray, plum, red, florals.
Key Piece: A leather-sleeved coat to wear over sheath dresses.
Accessories: Fur snoods with buckle closures, sleek clutches, red ankle strap platform heels.

Donna Karan looked afar for her Spring 2012 collection, which had a powerful tribal element that was more queen-of-the-desert than girl-on-safari. Karan cited her recent travels in Haiti as inspiration, which would explain why Wyclef Jean sat front row, and received a big kiss from Karan during her final bow. Glamourous, body-hugging ruched gowns were rendered in earth tones like mud, sienna, black, and cream, and accessorized with incredible spiked necklaces, which made the tall, slender models with their slicked back ponytails seem regal. There were daytime options too, like an airy canvas full skirt covered in earth-toned brushstrokes and paired with a sexy cutout racer bra, and a tailored leather tent coat over a canvas and jersey dress. The key, though, was the body-flattering drape of the dresses. Karan might be designing from an intensely personal experience, but she always keeps the everyday woman in mind, and the precise ruching and draping reflected her knowledge of a woman's curves in all the right ways. Who Would Wear It: Classic women with independent style whose primary concern is luxurious fit and fabrication - we would love to see Julianne Moore in one of these gowns.

Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore teamed up with Sarah Jessica Parker for the first-ever Urban Zen Stephan Weiss Apple awards at Donna Karan's Urban Zen foundation in NYC last night. The ceremony was named in honor of Karan's late husband, Stephan Weiss, who passed away after a battle with cancer in 2001. Bill Clinton was there to pick up the inaugural Apple award while education activist Courtney Ross and Dr. Oz received other honors. The crowd included stars from music, fashion, and drama, including Keith Richards, Wyclef Jean, and Anna Wintour. A Valentino-clad Uma Thurman stepped out as well along with Michael Douglas. Michael spoke about his wife Catherine Zeta-Jones's recent health issues, saying, "She's great! She's down in Miami doing Rock of Ages, the musical. So she's doing great. She's doing a great job." Sarah Jessica's own partner, Matthew Broderick, was also away attending Morgan Freeman's AFI Tribute in LA.
