Rodarte Fall 2012

Leave it to Kate and Laura Mulleavy to not only draw a star-studded front row - hello, George Lucas, Natalie Portman, and Dakota Fanning - but to deliver a stellar, 1940s-inspired Fall '12 collection too. One part cave-drawing-infused, one part retro femme, and one part Australian outback-reminiscent, Rodarte showcased a beautiful mix of totally girlie pieces with both red-carpet appeal and wearable ladylike style. The sister duo paid close attention to feminine details á la Peter Pan collars, artfully structured ruffles, and metal star appliqué hair combs. Yet, never ones to shy away from throwing some quirk into the picture, they added literal hand prints to long, flowy evening gowns and added cowboy buckles to double-strap leather belts. The biggest covet-worthy takeaway from today's show? After several seasons of collaborating with key shoe designers like Nicholas Kirkwood and Christian Louboutin, the Mulleavy sisters debuted their first-ever in-house shoe collection. We're calling it: Rodarte's two-tone pumps with heels made of plexiglass, sexy dominatrix-inspired spat heels, and lace-up boots will be Fall '12 It girl items. All in all, it's a gorgeous autumnal lineup, just begging to be worn.

Trends: Cropped cable-knit sweaters, hand-print chiffon dresses, and 1940s-inspired silhouettes.
Colors: Warm, earthy tones like rust and terracotta juxtaposed against cool neutrals.
Key Piece: Super-cute chunky cable-knit sweaters paired with terracotta-hued trousers; diaphanous hand-print chiffon dresses.
Accessories: Ladylike round-toe pumps with heels made of plexiglass or filled with sand, sexy lace-up gladiator-inspired spat heels. Look out for the subtleties in each heel design.
Who Would Wear It: Front-row attendees Natalie Portman and Dakota Fanning are high up on the list, but we think a plethora of A-list talent will be clamoring to wear this collection. Don't be surprised to see Taylor Swift, Alexa Chung, Kirsten Dunst, and Elle Fanning flaunting Rodarte's wares, too.

DKNY Fall 2012

Dedicated to the Beat Generation, DKNY Fall 2012 showed a collection filled with strong silhouettes, pretty details, and even some shearling and fur. Designed with a city girl in mind, these seemed dedicated to the working city girl - skirt and jacket looks were belted for a crisp look, and coats were edged in leather. Ashley Greene, Nina Dobrev, and Coco Rocha were seated in the front row, watching the models come in literally off the street - the show was sat in a cavernous garage-like space with double-doors that opened out onto the sidewalk, allowing the models to walk in. Minus the fact that it was freezing out, it made for an energetic show.

Trends: ladylike, fur details, leather sleeves, florals.
Colors: Black, gray, plum, red, florals.
Key Piece: A leather-sleeved coat to wear over sheath dresses.
Accessories: Fur snoods with buckle closures, sleek clutches, red ankle strap platform heels.
Who Would Wear It: Sophisticated city chicks who like to make a feminine statement - Kim Kardashian, Olivia Palermo.

So Many Races, So Many Training Plans

We may be in the thick of holiday madness, but the New Year is right around the corner and I, for one, am already planning out my race schedule for 2012. Take a little this holiday weekend, and give yourself the gift of fitness by heading into resolution season with a plan. Here are training schedules for many race lengths to help you cross the finish line!

The Beginning: 5K
Running and racing 3.1 miles might seem like a daunting feat, but with a plan in hand, the training process becomes so much easier. A word of caution: the 5K is considered a gateway race, and once you complete it, you will want to take on longer distances. Here are three posts to help you finish the race:

Here's a beginner 5K training schedule to get you started - just put one foot in front of the other.
Don't forget to read these tips for running your first 5K to help you cross the finish line with a smile on your face.
Once you finish one race, try another and go for a personal record using the How to Run a Faster 5K plan, created by coach Andrew Kastor.

Doubling Up: The 10K
Once you have a 5K under your belt, it's time to tackle a 10K. The 6.2-mile race means adding to your weekly mileage to build up your endurance.

Going Halfsies: Half Marathon
When you're ready for the challenge of running 13.1 miles, the half marathon begins to call you name. Upping your mileage to cover this much ground requires planning!

This half-marathon training schedule starts with weekly mileage just under 10, and builds up to 25 miles in seven days, before tapering before the race.
Not sure if you're ready to meet the challenge of a half, get inspired by this tale of a first timer's race.

Trying It All: Sprint Triathlon
If pounding the pavement day in and day out isn't your thing, mix it up a little and train for a sprint triathlon. The blend of swimming, biking, and running build cross training into your schedule.

Take two and a half months to train for a sprint distance triathlon: swim a half mile, bike 13 miles, and run a 5K. Be sure to practice those transitions!

The holidays are a perfect time to get cozy with your camera. The lights, the food, the weather, all of it makes for an awesome shot at a moment's notice. Chrome was kind enough to send me this bag to test out, and so far, I don't want to give it up. At first glance the Niko may not seem so "female-friendly," but on the contrary, it has no problem fitting smaller frames, and best of all, it's not too bulky.

Made of tough military grade nylon, this bag can take a beating and come out the other side looking shiny and new. Cyclists and bikers will love the Niko since it's lightweight and compact, but offers amazing protection for your gear thanks to its padded interior and water-resistant zippers. The signature Chrome seat-belt chest strap offers a satisfying click when closed (which also doubles as a bottle opener for those beer-fueled hikes), and the waist straps help it stay snugly in place. I have worried that someone (or something) will accidentally hit the center closure and send my gear falling to the ground, which is a scary thought if you're toting an expensive camera. I will say that ladies with a larger chest may not find this bag desirable. The padded chest strap is wide, so it could cause an unpleasant and uncomfortable "separation of the girls" if you know what I mean.

She then cinched the waist with a double-layer belt ($39) and to further the effect, she topped it all off with funky jewels, like her skull cameo necklace, and a pop of color via a sweet red leather clutch. Miuccia Prada showed her Fall collection for Miu Miu today, which she described as "sweet, charming, feminine, nice - and always thinking of the important woman." The genesis? A '40s-inspired collection that was given a dose of modernity in the way of floral or bird print wrap dresses paired with tilted baseball caps and glittery platform heels, or even a wool suit remixed with a boyish top and refreshing ruching effect. Mink fur and oversized bow belts added a decadent touch, while oversized shoulder silhouettes lend a directional look. For accessories, big frame clutches, draped bow shoes, and funky sunnies will undoubtedly top the must-haves list of every kitschy cool girl out there.

For Yves Saint Laurent's Fall collection, Stefano Pilati stayed true to the brand's elegant aesthetic - with the perfect hint of sex appeal. Sheer details, feather trim, and patent lend playful accents to impeccably tailored black and white checkered suits. It's an effortless mix of easy separates, looser silhouettes in oversize blazers and wide-leg trousers; then the more luxe - a patent vest, a fur coat and oversize fur sleeves, fantastic, silky white dresses, and jumpsuits for evening. It's luxurious and still accessible; strong femininity that's both Parisian-chic and '70s glamorous.

2011 Fall Paris Fashion Week: Roland Mouret

We rely on Roland Mouret to deliver femininity and polish. For Fall '11 he succeeds in crafting a collection in the same vein, though this time, channeling a softer side in the form of easier silhouettes. Roland, too, opts for longer hemlines and shows nods to the '70s in furs, wide-leg trousers, and draped halter tops. But there are still the cinched waists and body-conscious details we expect, even in the design of jackets and coats, which too nip at the waist. It's a careful balance of what the modern femme craves - more structure, pants, and separates - and then, again something equally refined, but less structural, more movement and easy, womanly dressing. In the end, fan Victoria Beckham could find her cocktail dress just as easily as one with a taste for softer, subtler femininity could find hers.

Trends: Fur, slits, longer hemlines, draping, print.
