Quick Stain-Fighting Tips For Untimely Disasters

No matter how hard we try to keep clean, stains happen to the best of us. They usually occur at the most inopportune time landing on some of our favorite tees, sweaters, and fashion god forbid, white dresses. That said, we compiled a list of tried and true easy stain fighting tips from designers, clothing care gurus, and fellow editors. Now if only we could look just as glamorous as Lily Donaldson and Gemma Ward, seen here in Vogue, while cleaning our clothes . . .

Oil stains (pizza, grease, sauce): Grab a white absorbent cloth and place under the stain. Create a solution with two tablespoons of dish wash soap, like Palmolive, and one tablespoon of white vinegar. Dab the stain lightly until it breaks down and passes through into cloth, and then flush with lukewarm water. - John Mahdessian, Madame Paulette

Fab Tip For Fall: Chop Those Boots

It's high Summer time, but I'm slowly prepping for Fall. It all started with a pair of midcalf black boots I purchased last year from Nine West. They were great at the time, but flash forward to many months later when I started to have a problem with them. I had initially sought a moto-chic vibe, but these boots were more screaming Wellies, thanks to the pull-up tab detail. I had overlooked that fact, but recently I've been seriously craving a pair of short buckled boots to rough up my flirty Summer frocks. That's when a light bulb went off in my head.

read more. I was playing around with the boots, scrunching them down, folding them in, trying to figure out a way to make them more fresh. Then I had an idea - why not have them chopped? I took them to my favorite shoe repair man and asked him to shorten my boots, taking them from mid-calf length to about six inches above my ankle. For about $15, I was able to get a whole new boot. Now it's your turn: go into your closet, inspect your old pairs, and determine if there's any you can chop for a whole new fabulous look for Fall!

One of the biggest I've come across is opening up my package and realizing that the item before me is not at all what it looked like on the computer screen. Now, this isn't necessarily the fault of the retailer. There are inevitable discrepancies due to photography - colors and patterns don't always translate. This isn't reason enough to quit online shopping altogether, no way. Instead, I'll share a quick precaution you can take to ensure that what you see on your screen is what you will get in your hands. Finding the perfect shoe - be it heels, flats, tennis shoes, or flip flops - can be as difficult as finding a needle in a haystack. But with the right knowledge - which shoes make your legs longer and which give you bad ankles - finding the right shoe is as easy as reading this blog. So to help you out, I've created a (semi-) brief guide:

Heels

Round-toed heels can (sometimes) make your feet look like hooves
Tan heels make your legs look longer

Black heels against pale white skin does not look good - so wear nude stockings
Strappy heels work against people with larger ankles (or cankles, in the nicest way possible!)
Pointy-toed heels can be a pain (unless, of course, you have narrow toes!), but they can do wonders for your feet
Very high heels (that is, 5 inches or more) can ruin perfectly good posture
Heeled boots that rise to the mid-calf or more can elongate the legs, but ankle-height boots visually chop the legs in half.
