Dress Me Up: Full of Fall

Donna Karan's Fall collection is the epitome of Autumn. Warm browns, vivid rust, olive green, terra cotta, mustard, and burgundy were the plush colors the designer used to spice up her line. Now is the perfect time to draw inspiration from it and fill our closets with similar pieces. You can even get inspired from the changing colors of the leaves outside. Stick to one or two colors at most. I've found that gray tights are the perfect accent to any autumnal color. If you're still frazzled, study the Fall collections, see my suggestions below, and be full of Fall.

New York Fashion Week, Fall 2008: BCBG Max Azria

No matter the silhouette or color palette of BCBG's Fall 2008 collection, one thing was a constant much like the Spring 2008 collection: belted waists.

Floor-length dresses, mini frocks, tulip skirts, long blazers, pleats, one-shoulder styles, and silky fabrics were all tied pretty with rope-like belts, which provided an overall at-ease vibe. The silhouettes and fabrics were far more interesting to me than the color scheme, which included mostly neutrals and some mellow jewel tones. I envision a stylish but safe fashionista embracing this collection.

Speaking of safety, one model took a spill on the runway. It doesn't happen very often with such professional models but when it does I must report. I believe it was Anabela Belikova - but she bounced right up. A smooth save, a smooth collection.

Behind the Seams: Nordstrom Fall 2008 Designer Preview

Seeing runway photos is not nearly as enticing as seeing the clothes live, and Nordstrom's Designer Preview 2008 reiterated that fact. For example, Bill Blass's gray/black tulle-bodice strapless dress - you know, the one Anne Hathaway wore at the Get Smart premiere - literally came to life before my eyes on the catwalk. While I admired it on Anne, I fell madly in love with it that night because I saw the way the bottom half of the dress danced as the model pranced down the runway. Donna Karan, Stella McCartney, Derek Lam, Missoni, Valentino, Michael Kors, Peter Som, Burberry Prorsum, Vera Wang, and Versace also each showed about a dozen Fall looks.

The night was centered around the runway, but the pre- and postparty was also a blast. Clothes hanging on tall racks gave guests, including myself, the chance to get up close and personal with their catwalk faves, while champagne and hors d'oeuvres kept us satiated. Oh, and I got to meet the ultimate San Francisco socialite, Joy Bianchi!

Paris Fashion Week, Fall 2008: Balenciaga

Structure, rubber, and slits: That's what Balenciaga Fall 2008 is made of.

Although the collection had continuity from previous seasons - cocoon-shaped jackets, cropped fitted pants, and greyscale color - surprises still abounded. Pearl-encrusted and rhinestone costume jewelry draped around necklines and wrists, deconstructed velvet bandage tops popped in primary colors, and hand-painted warrior armor closed the show.

But oh, the shoes! Silver on black pointy toe heels, white booties with sheer latex fluttering off the back and stilted square lucite heels all stole my heart.

This collection is definitely a more pared-down group than Nicholas Ghesquiere has sent down the runway in the past, but that's not to say that it doesn't deserve less attention . . .

New York Fashion Week, Fall 2008: Rodarte

If someone were to costume design a sci-fi ballerina flick, the result might be something like Rodarte's Fall 2008 collection. Tattered loosely-knit fishnets, super studded gloves and Louboutin heels, and Degas-inspired tutus: they were all there.

The sisters Mulleavy have come a long way in a few seasons, and this time around presented a spectacle of ghostly alien girls decked out in everything from a highlighter-green chiffon dress to a red and black yarn skirt. As far as being wearable or affordable, I'm not sure either applies to the collection, but it is definitely beautiful and whimsical - the two things Rodarte does best.

Best of 2008: Fabulous Fashion Week Shows

2008 spawned a tremendous flurry of fabulous Fashion Week shows. Let's see, there were New York Fall and Spring shows, Milan Fashion Week, Paris Fashion Week, London Fashion Week, and LA Fashion Week. Oh, and don't forget all of the ravishing Resort and Pre-Fall collections. Some of my faves were Proenza Schouler's Fall line, Alexander Wang's Spring offerings, and Balmain's Spring collection in Paris. All different, all divine. Which were your favorites? 2008 Fall Couture: Christian Lacroix

Mythical goth drama emanated out the seams at Christian Lacroix's 2008 Fall couture showing. Through tons of noir and lace, I was spellbound with how the designer captured the essence of insect beauty and turned it into a magnificent collection of wearable art.

Models walked down the bright red runway morphing from simple, cocoon-like structures into free form gowns. Lacroix showed his skills turning heavy felts, wools, silks, and jersey into structured tops with major shoulder detailing. The dresses and skirts went from layered and flouncy to short and constructed. While Lacroix dabbled with different silhouettes, exact detailing was a constant. The use of heavy lace and intricate embroidery with insect-like creatures sitting upon shoulders of tiered gowns and structured jackets was nothing short of rich and decadent.

The occasional pops of jewel-toned colors were a delight and also bright stints of neon yellow. Leave it to Lacroix to show a little bit of everything in his latest couture.

Sneak Peek! Mossimo For Target Fall 2008 Collection

I know you're all as excited as I am about the news that Thakoon is collaborating with Target. To keep busy until its arrival in December, check out Mossimo's Fall 2008 collection. I must say, it's a good distraction.

Among the pieces worth investing in are a cozy sweater cardigan (left), a satin trench, a gray and black plaid coat, wide-leg trousers, and a faux leather jacket. Plus-size ladies will be glad to know that the Mossimo For Target line also offers trendy pieces in sizes 1X to 3X. As always, thanks Target for keeping the inexpensive goods coming.

Fab Ad: Givenchy Fall 2008

Ricardo Tisci describes his latest ads for Givenchy's Fall 2008 collection as "a family portrait," and a diverse family at that! The models he used - Lara Stone, Maria Carla Boscono, Lakshmi Menon, Natasha Poly, and Kristen Owen - are all very different. But all of them "represent elegance, femininity and masculinity with character," Tisci continued.

The campaign is black and white to represent Givenchy's colors. Seeing as I'm intrigued by models, I love the power they're given in these ads. Yes, the point is to sell the clothes, but it's cool how Tisci placed such prominence on his muses. And I'm so excited to see old-school model Kristen Owen back on the scene. What do you think?

2008 Fall Couture: Jean Paul Gaultier

If Ursula from The Little Mermaid had a closet, many pieces from Jean Paul Gaultier's 2008 Fall Couture collection would hang in it. First thing you notice when dissecting this line is the intricate details such as piping that can be mistaken for octopus legs.
The bright colors - cobalt, neon yellow, orange, green - take center stage and up the drama factor. Protruding feathers on several dresses also stand out. Fur, leather, and satin play a key role. Leather gloves with neon piping are badass while fur collars are sophisticated. While most pieces are creature-like, some give a nod to the equestrian theme. I can't say that any of the pieces are translatable to real life but they sure electrocute the runway!
