Fab Read: How Sassy Changed My Life

Do you gals remember Sassy? Before Teen Vogue there was Sassy, a late-eighties teen mag about feminism, celebrities and girl culture. What set Sassy apart from other magazines at the time was its honest voice and too-cool attitude - although some say this blase attitude contributed to its demise in 1996.

Almost twenty years later, New York writers Kara Jesella and Marisa Meltzer have written a "love letter" to Sassy in their book How Sassy Changed My Life: A Love Letter to the Greatest Teen Magazine of All Time, $13.

It is a behind-the-scenes look at the magazine's office culture, its coverage of feminism, celebrities and girls' problems. It also highlights struggles with advertisers, publishers, religious conservatives and other detractors.

If you missed the Sassy boat or have (foggy) fond memories, this book allows us to see where our rebel sisters and cousins were getting their advice from in the 80s heyday!

firstVIEW is an online fashion mag that specializes in runway photos and videos. There are 1,825,209 to be exact, and one can't possibly go through each and every one of them (although I have attempted!). But it's definitely worth it to browse a handful of catwalk photos from all over the world and from hundreds of designer collections. The neatest part of firstVIEW is their calendar of various fashion shows from different countries like Australia, Russia, Spain and Hong Kong. Not that most of us can just drop everything to go catch a catwalk performance in Paris, but still! You can also purchase fashion books and videos for your library at home.

Word on the street is that you might dump your skinny jeans and start wearing stuff like this. What are those anyway--capri flares?

Look, Kate, I know it's your world and we fashion stragglers just live in it, but I just got these skinny jeans a few months ago, and I'll be damned if you're going to make me chuck them now. In addition to my monetary sacrifice, I discovered that in order not to look like I was wearing a post-lipo girdle, I had to cut out my nightly white wine, Ruffles and jalapeno-flavored cheese sauce ritual.

I didn't do this for nothin', sister, so you'd better squeeze your skinny ass back into those Siwys for at least a few more months and quit showing off. You look good in everything. We get it.

The French seem to have a flair for almost everything. (Well, except for that whole perpetual smoking thing.) While not everyone in France necessarily believes in the working-out-for-better-health theory that we Americans like to follow, they do believe in having good sneakers, which is something we can all agree on. The French sneaker maker Veja has created a sneaker you (and Mother Earth) can feel good about, because the sneakers, or baskets as the French call them, are made entirely from organic and natural elements.

The organic cotton is grown in northern Brazil, and the rubber comes from a small co-op in the Amazon. What's more, Veja claims that the sewing and assembly is done at co-ops where the workers rights are valued and respected. Oh la la!
