Joseph Gordon-Levitt on Hesher, Myths About Child Actors, and His True Creative Passion

Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays the title role in Hesher, though the foul-mouthed arsonist isn't the most conventional leading man. The actor nonetheless had no problem sympathizing with the character, who turns out to be more complicated than first meets the eye. We chatted with Joseph at the movie's recent press day in LA, though he kept mum when we asked for details about his upcoming work in the next Batman installment The Dark Knight Rises. Joseph had no problem opening up about his admiration for his Hesher costar Natalie Portman, especially since the mom-to-be makes her debut as a producer with this film. Joseph is busy pursuing a similar passion with his HitRECORD, a company that connects artists and encourages them to collaborate.

Seth Rogen Makes Cancer-Stricken Joseph Gordon-Levitt Laugh in the 50/50 Trailer

I still think of Seth Rogen as a raunchy comedy guy, but in Funny People he showed that he can pull off understated comedy as well. In 50/50, he's revisiting the subject of a friend with cancer, only this time, he's coming from a place of personal experience. Based on his friend Will Reiser's cancer diagnosis at the age of 27, the film is produced by Rogen and written by Reiser. Rogen also stars as Kyle, the best friend of Adam (the character based on Reiser), who is played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt. We see him go from a healthy young man who's shocked to find out he has a tumor to someone battling illness and its physical and mental repercussions. Adam has help in the form of his supportive and yes, funny, friend Kyle and a youthful therapist played by Anna Kendrick.

Despite the delicate theme, it looks like Rogen and co. have hit just the right balance; it seems funny but restrained, and objective about Adam's diagnosis while neither downplaying it nor manipulating the audience. I think Gordon-Levitt was the perfect casting choice for Adam, since the actor has the chops for a meaty role like this, and he's able to play straight man to Rogen's sense of humor. We already knew that Christopher Nolan was bringing his Inception stars Marion Cotillard and Joseph Gordon-Levitt along for The Dark Knight Rises, and now we know who they'll be playing. As expected, Cotillard will be a new love interest for Christian Bale's Bruce Wayne in the form of a Wayne Industries board member named Miranda Tate. Gordon-Levitt, on the other hand, won't be taking on a colorful villain after all: instead he'll play a beat cop named John Blake.

It's official: Joseph Gordon-Levitt is on board for The Dark Knight Rises! Rumors of the actor's involvement have been circling for some time, so the news shouldn't come as a huge surprise; however, we finally have word on what part he'll play. Even though JGL won't be stepping in as the Riddler like many of us had hoped, he will take on the character of Alberto Falcone, aka "The Holiday Killer," a serial killer and son of Carmine Falcone (Tom Wilkinson in Batman Begins).

Gordon-Levitt is just the latest Hollywood star to sign on for the anticipated film. To recap: JGL's fellow Inception actor Tom Hardy is locked in for bad guy Bane. Marion Cotillard has been mentioned as a potential Batman love interest, and Anne Hathaway will play the woman who eventually becomes Catwoman. But the casting isn't over just yet, as Christopher Nolan may be adding another female to his list with Juno Temple. The hot up-and-comer's name is being tossed around as a "street-smart" Gotham girl, though that's all we know at the moment.

Hesher Trailer: Joseph Gordon-Levitt Lights Things on Fire, Meets Natalie Portman

Thanks to a long-haired Joseph Gordon-Levitt, indie flick Hesher made some waves at last year's Sundance Film Festival, but we've been waiting since then for a release date and a trailer. Today, we have both; the movie comes out April 15, and we finally get a longer look at the film (more than just this clip), which stars Gordon-Levitt as a grungy mentor of sorts to Devon Brochu's character T.J., who has recently lost his mother.

With his father (Rainn Wilson) deep in the grieving process, T.J. is vulnerable to being befriended by the older, greasy Gordon-Levitt, an eccentric man who calls himself Hesher. Spouting odd words of wisdom and exhibiting the occasional destructive act like lighting furniture on fire, Hesher isn't exactly a great role model. T.J.'s other new friend comes in the form of a de-glammed Natalie Portman, a grocery store clerk on whom T.J. has a crush. It's tough to determine how exactly we're supposed to take the beloved JGL - is he weirdly sympathetic or just a weirdo? Decide for yourself when you watch the trailer after the jump.
