Milan Fashion Week, Spring 2009: Gucci

Not that she ever lost it, but Frida got her groove back. It's taken the designer a few seasons to really make a splash at the house of Gucci, and splashy this Spring collection is. With attendees like Rihanna and Rachel Zoe, I'm sure the aquarium colors and provocative shapes impressed. At Gucci there's always a lot of skin, but the clothes, many in vivid tropical and geometric prints, were spectacular spectacular.Utilitarian pants met loose blouses. Asymmetrical cuts supplied sex appeal. Colorful suiting contrasted sheer blouses. Many designers are playing with pants for Spring, but Gucci's dresses may keep the all-in-one look afloat. The leafy prints are Fab, in both a purple and camel and a turquoise and lagoon blue combo. A safari-infused anorak was even given the Frida treatment: fun, sexy, and party-ready.

Fab Flash: Rihanna and Gucci Unite For UNICEF

Gucci and Rihanna love children. In collaboration with the United Nation's Children's Fund, UNICEF, Gucci has enlisted music sensation Rihanna to spearhead the label's first ad campaign with the nonprofit organization.

"I felt a musician and a beautiful woman was the perfect icon for this campaign" said Gucci's creative director, Frida Giannini.

Dubbed, "Tattoo Heart," the ads will feature Rihanna donning Gucci's special-edition products all incorporating a tattoo-style heart designed for UNICEF. "We've come a long way from Miss Bisou to Gucci," said the 20-year-old singer. "It's an honor to represent Gucci."

Keep your eyes peeled for the first round of ads set to debut in December magazines. Twenty-five percent of sales will be donated to the UNICEF organization.

Note: Rihanna also talked about adding clothing design to her repertoire stating,"I love fashion, so it's only natural for me to want to create my own line." We'll keep you posted on that one.

Resort 2009: Gucci

Did you by any chance watch Gucci's 2009 Resort collection, held at Villa Aurelia in Rome, via live webcast? If not, I'm here as your eyes for the show, which celebrated the 70th anniversary of the Gucci store in Rome.

So what does one serve up for a 70th anniversary? Nothing but grandness all around. Parts of it were very Gucci – slick, sexy - but it also incorporated a glamorous bohemian style with long, flowy maxi dresses, each with a unique print. Striped pants, leather jackets, pleated mini dresses, and some hints of nautical also saw their time on the catwalk. While ultragirlie maxi dresses painted a very feminine picture, in contrast, crisp trousers demanded a mannish power; this incorporation of two extremes is becoming quite common in fashion. And why not? It's set to appeal to all types of customers. Brava!

Fab Ad: Drew Barrymore for Gucci Fine Jewelry

I've always thought Drew is pretty in a tousled sort of way. But I could never imagine, until I laid eyes on these Gucci Fine Jewelry ads, that she could be such a refined beauty. I did a double take at first because I didn't believe it was her modeling such a glamorous collection of Gucci's famous horsebit designs. She must be very flattered because she is the first ever celebrity to be featured in a Gucci ad. These were shot by Dutch photographers Inez Van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin in a Paris studio. Oh la la!

Drew even got Gucci Creative Director Frida Giannini's stamp of approval: “Drew brought wonderful energy and excitement to this project. She is such a strong and confident woman, but her humor and sensitivity made her completely disarming." Do you share her sentiment about these ads?

Fab Flash: More Female Designers Exuding Influence

Big change is afoot in the fashion industry: after the 90s, which were dominated by male designers, women designers seem to be taking the upper hand.

Even though female designers have a long way to go in male-run fashion capitals like New York and Paris, there does seem to be a trend emerging, particularly in Milan. In Italy alone, a large number of family-run companies were founded or are helmed by women: Alberta Ferretti, Prada, Versace, Fendi, Trussardi, Missoni, Etro, and Emilio Pucci. As Paris-based industry consultant Concetta Lanciaux explained, "Italy's tradition of family ownership for fashion companies gives women a great chance to emerge, whereas France, by contrast, is dominated by luxury groups. It's more corporate."

Although women have always played a pivotal role in fashion, especially in early 1900s Paris, when Coco Chanel, Madeleine Vionnet, and Jeanne Lanvin reigned supreme, after World War II, a new generation of male designers emerged: Dior, Cristobal Balenciaga, and Pierre Balmain. Since then, female designers have come in spurts: Mary Quant and Betsey Johnson in the 60s and 70s, and Rei Kawakubo in the 80s.

Finally, as more and more women are taking charge, their prominence is returning to what it was in early 1900s Paris. Alessandra Facchinetti has just succeeded Valentino, Frida Giannini took over from Tom Ford at Gucci, and let's not forget the outstanding influence of Miuccia Prada. But it all makes sense, as Donatella Versace explains, "women are instinctively in tune with the female customer."

Next up, we have a mishmash of ensembles ranging from crisp to ethereal by Gucci, Michael Kors, Giorgio Armani, Anna Sui, Christian Dior, Derek Lam, and Narciso Rodriguez - phew! I love how Gucci's Frida Giannini kept things sleek and sexy with streamlined cuts and colors. Keeping the neck high and slit high on this gown is a genius move. Oh, but there's more - don't miss it.

Gucci Family Goes Stylishly Green

Earth Day has passed but designers are showing no signs of slowing down their eco initiatives. Next up to show its support for Mother Earth is Gucci Group, who have enlisted brands - such as Alexander McQueen, Yves Saint Laurent, and Bottega Veneta - to design limited-edition, sustainable products.

This eco initiative promotes the release of the environmentally conscious film, Home, which debuts June 5 on World Environment Day. Alexander McQueen's trippy earth skull design (left) will be printed on an organic cotton scarf to be sold in stores and online starting in June. Other eco endeavors include Gucci’s Frida Giannini and Yves Saint Laurent’s Stefano Pilati who design tees; Bottega Veneta will create a tote; and Sergio Rossi will design an eco pump made out of eco-sensitive materials. Proceeds from the sale will be donated to Goodplanet.org, an environmental-protection charity.

Fab Flash: Designers Choose Their Fall '09 Faces

UPDATE: Jennifer Connelly has once again been chosen by Nicolas Ghesquière to represent Balenciaga. Meanwhile, Stefano Pilati picked Christy Turlington to star in his Yves Saint Laurent campaign.

I know, Spring has just begun, but the fashion world is always a step, or should I say a season, ahead of the masses. Designers have started choosing faces for their Fall campaigns. Steven Meisel will be snapping Madonna for her second debut for Louis Vuitton; Frida Giannini has chosen Jacquetta Wheeler as the face for her Gucci campaign, which will be shot in London; and Burberry snagged budding stylista Emma Watson for its campaign. 2009 Fall Milan Fashion Week: Gucci

Where there's metallics, there's Fab. Where there's asymmetrical stripes, shots of turquoise, and bold shoulders there's Frida Giannini's Fall. Keeping the '80s trend strong, Gucci presented a dark, shimmering collection. Kimono and draped tops atop leather and sparkling leggings are party-girl perfect. Lagoon colors of turquoise, azul, and gray are appealing, while loads of black are always apropos. A couple mod suits are thrown in for tailored fun, while nary a gown in sight. But for night owls, girls do have the option of the sparkling jumpsuit or slinky belted mini dress. Polka dots, sheer blouses, and itty-bitty tailored pants add to the fun, but I must ask: Is it all too '80s? Or just right?
