The Cannes Film Festival is off to a very stylish start thanks to pastel-clad celebrities including Diane Kruger, Freida Pinto, and Eva Longoria. Diane is serving as a jury member at this year's festival, which means we will be getting daily doses of her impeccable red-carpet style. She kicked off the opening ceremony in an ethereal, seafoam Giambattista Valli number that floated down the carpet. Freida Pinto and Eva Longoria also opted for softer shades on Cannes's first night. Amy Adams went for a refined retro vibe in a one-shouldered black-and-white Giambattista Valli number. Tonight's red-carpet ensemble is just further proof that she's nailed that stunning balance between an old-school Veronica Lake movie star and a Disney princess á la Enchanted. While the sweeping floor-length gown spoke for itself, we have to point out her awesome gold bow-tie belt - a perfectly ladylike-cum-quirky accent that provided a gilded boost to the outfit as a whole. For Fall 2012, Giambattista Valli honed in on the neo-lady - a different breed of ladylike sensibility that mixed edgier prints with classically tailored silhouettes. The result? A mashup of brightly patterned chiffon, major fur embellishments, matchy-matchy suits, an updated take on houndstooth, and sheer pleated skirts to start. While the overarching theme was markedly femme sophistication, Valli took care to never let that steer him away from a bright color palette (orange! red! gold!), prints on prints, and see-through details. A perfect example of this can be found in a menswear-inspired suit set decked out in a bold geo-pattern, or in the sleek frocks adorned with a dropwaist-esque hem and embellished with fur. It's an interesting mix of evening-suitable looks injected with a totally youthful quirk.

Trends: Peplum sweaters, ladylike pencil skirts and modest sheaths, cinched waists, fur-lined hems, bold printed suits, sheer pleats, and patterned chiffon.
