A Drugstore Version of Dirt

I've already waxed poetic about the magical, sweet-smelling hair styling paste that is Dirt by Jonathan Product. As Jonathan (from the reality show Blowout) explains on the label: “There’s something amazing about the way hair looks and behaves the day after - washing, that is." Seeing as how I'm obsessed with Dirt, I couldn't help but notice a suspiciously similar product while browsing the aisles the other day at Walgreens. Called FX Special Effects Texture Dirt Texturizing Paste, this styling paste proclaims: "Texture Dirt has been created to easily give you the amazing way your hair looks and behaves the day after washing."

Sound familiar? Since the FX brand has obviously been paying attention to Dirt's copy-writing, I bought a jar to see if it had replicated the styling effect, too. Plus, the Texture Dirt, available here costs just $5.99, versus $26 for the Jonathan product. However, after trying the FX brand, I think I'm going to stay loyal to Jonathan. The drugstore stuff wasn't terrible for a budget buy, but it had a more glue-like texture that made it hard to disperse though my hair. Although it gave my hair similar piece-y results, it didn't leave my locks looking or feeling nearly as smooth and silky as the Dirt by Jonathan does. I guess you get what you pay for.

Organic Style for Your Hair

For years I've admired the sleek, minimal packaging of the Modern Organic Products haircare line from afar. But I finally got around to trying one of MOP's styling products-specifically, the C-System Styling Conditioner-and now I'm enamored. I caught up with the curly haired cutie at New York Fashion Week, and we talked, and talked, and talked. So what did Fab and John have to talk about? Read and see!

You're more of a jeans and t-shirt kind of guy . . .

"Check this out: it appears as if I’m a jeans and t-shirt guy, but if I were to walk you through my closet, you’ll notice one thing about what I wear - you can never tag me. You can never say that I’m wearing this by that person. Cause I only normal wear stuff by my friends."

So your friends design clothes?

"Yeah. I don’t even want to give the brands away. Some of these brands are clothing lines so small that it's technically an artisan process and not a mass production thing. So I wear things that look like I just threw stuff on, but it’s the best version. When I’m wearing a hoodie, it looks like I just threw a hoodie on. I’m wearing what I discovered and figured out is the best hoodie I can find. And I’ll tell you, if you ever want to know the best hoodie, I know the best hoodie. The best hoodie ever made is by a company called Loopwheeler. It's all [styles] from the '40s and '50s that no one uses in America anymore. It makes one meter of fabric every hour. Do you know a store called Collette in Paris? They sell Loopwheeler. It’s the greatest stuff in the world."

"Can I give you John Mayer’s fashion tips? Will you make a blog about this? Ready? . . . Number one, in no particular order: basics are the hardest to find. The word basic always gives the impression that it’s the easiest to find. Basics are incredibly hard to find. When you find a white t-shirt, a hoodie, a pair of jeans. When you find a basic you love, buy four of them. Because you need to create a basic private stock. Because basics come and go very quickly and next season you can be sure they will change. And it will never be the same."

This time LC gets a bit more up close and personal about her busy life, and the highlight of her past busy year, starting her clothing line.

We know you have a ton of projects going on right now. What does a typical day look like for you?

They are all kind of different; this week is crazy because we have a photo shoot every single day. Except Wednesday, I am not the model, I’m shooting my resort look book and I have to be there all day, so those are actually even longer. It's almost more work when you are not the model; it's like an 11 or 12-hour day. Normally we film a few days out of the week and other days we are kind of doing other stuff. We keep pretty busy.

Have you ever come across anyone in all of your nights out that made you really starstruck? Any fun celebrities?

Actually yeah, I met Marc Jacobs when we were filming and I got so nervous when I saw him that I didn’t really know what to do. I was trying to act cool, but I didn’t even stand up to shake his hand. I actually came off a little bit too cold, like I didn’t really care and I felt kind of bad. I get really starstruck over really random people and designers.

Do you have any Summer must have items?

Sunscreen. I use a lot less of everything during the Summer - less makeup and almost no hair products. Summer is a little more natural I feel like. I think good bikinis because it's Summer!

Are you going to be at New York Fashion Week in September? Working or for fun?

Yeah, right now I am planning on it, but I never know for sure. Kelly [Cutrone] hasn’t told us whether we are working yet or not. I will either have to go out with Kelly or I will just go out to see some of the shows.

Do you prefer bags or shoes?

Oh, shoes!
