Fab Finds of The Week: Headgear

Headgear received lukewarm praise a couple months back. But I see funky headbands and hats have caught some of your Fab Finding eyes. I for one have always liked headgear. Hats and headbands are a functional and cute way to give hair a day off. The hottest crop of headgear we are seeing is in the form of turbans, and while this look isn't for everyone, those knotted turban headbands I've been seeing are pretty irresistible - especially the ones in the jeweled toned spread in this month's Domino magazine. I was just on the hunt for one that wasn't $40 but more in the $5 range; my solution ended up being a score at a cheapo accessories store and some needle and thread - more on my D.I.Y. turban headband method later.

For now, the Fab Finder of the week is atripp for finding the black turban headband that jump started my search. March Shopping Madness: Headgear

I continue to love the resurgence of fabulous headgear on the runways. Not to be mistaken for the kind that involves braces, headgear can really add extra flair to any Spring ensemble.

A silk head wrap can complete a bohemian-inspired look, a straw fedora can make you look oh so suave, a visor can polish off a sporty outfit . . . you get the picture. Doesn't Chanel Iman (left) look adorable with her hat dramatically placed on the side of her head at the Marc by Marc Jacobs show? There are no rules when topping off, so get creative and lay something on that'll make you feel happy.

Spring Peek: Headgear

Keeping up with my hat kick, headgear was an interesting trend for Spring 2007. At Derek Lam (shown) graphic patterned scarves were wrapped around the head creating colorful turbans. Other designers experimented with thick, layered headbands and babushka-like concoctions. Marc Jacobs collaborated with Stephen Jones to create metallic caps for his namesake collection and rosette corsages for Louis Vuitton. If you want to top off your look with something unique this Spring, invest in some headgear. Get prepped for Spring with my other Spring Peeks.

A Fabby Halloween: Cancan Girl

If I didn't already plan my Halloween costume this year – I'm going to be a mermaid - I would totally be a cancan girl. But hey, there's always next year, right? In case you didn't know, cancan dancers first derived from Paris in the mid 1800s. They were known for performing lively, leg-kicking dances in a chorus line. Since then, the dance style has spread across the world. You can always spot a cancan dancer by her awesome costume: long fluffy skirts, petticoats, corsets, stockings, and colorful feather headgear. You too, can be a cancan.

2009 Fall Couture: Giorgio Armani Prive

Giorgio Armani's Couture collection exuded wild, intricate details and I loved it all. For Fall, the mastermind experimented with three elements: modernity, rocker chic, and sophisticated tailoring. The results? A smashing lineup of decadent paliette pantsuits, satin frocks, zebra-print blazers, beaded skirts, and velvet aplenty. I love how he mixed together different textiles for maximum interest and texture - my favorite has to be this multimarvelous skirt suit. Fab-u-lous. Beaded and sequined headgear lent a vintage, flapper vibe to the collection while zipper and fur embellishments added a youthful touch. It's risky mixing together so many different textures and elements, but Armani once again proved his cunning capability.

Sneak Peek! Jennifer Behr's Elegant Punk Fall '09

Jennifer Behr, best known for girlie confections on the head of Blair Waldorf, has turned to the dark side. Her next immense collection of headgear is inspired by Victorian jet jewelry. While you will find nil color, you will find texture and sparkle; duchess satin turbans, nickel hardware, grey pearls, patent leather, flat chains, and romantic belts meld together to create an elegant punk mood. Also notice the models' hair styling for tips on how to wear. I can certainly see this deadly studded headband on new queen bee Jenny Humphrey . . .

Fab Ad: Dolce and Gabbana Women's Fall '09

So we weren't impressed with Dolce and Gabbana's sporty Fall men's campaign. Moving on. Let's join the sultry Mariacarla Boscono, Heidi Mount, and Edita Vilkeviciute, in Vegas! Also shot by Steven Klein, the blue-hued ads depict the lionesses lounging across poker tables in the house's dramatic shoulderific Fall offerings. This image is my favorite, with the shaggy purple abominable coats. There's also Mariacarla in a white one - dig the surreal headgear. Vegas's bling and gaud rarely serve as backdrop for ads, what do you think of Dolce and Gabbana's high-fashion gamble?

FABTV: Jamiroquai "Virtual Insanity"

Wiki defines Jamiroquai as "an English acid jazz/funk/soul/disco band." You know I dig those off-kilter bands. Especially when the leader singer is fine. I discovered Jamiroquai in middle school; my ears were dazzled by the funky beats and Jay Kay's soulful voice. And boy has style! He is known for his oversize headgear and Puma kicks. The hats have a downside, though: they make his gorgeous face hard to see. This video is rather hypnotizing with the escalator revolving floors, but it's actually pretty minimal. The best part of it is Jay Kay's awesomely cute dance moves, such a cool cat.
