Intarsia

A knitting technique used to create patterns with multiple colors. Also the retail term for sweaters with geometric designs. Fields of different colors and materials appear to be inlaid in one another, but are in fact all separate pieces that fit together like a jigsaw puzzle. Argyle socks and sweaters are normally done in Intarsia.

Marni Spring 2012

Consuelo Castiglioni emphasized Marni's eclectic approach to femininity for Spring 2012, with a collection that was filled with architectural, modern takes on ladylike shapes, presented in the bold color and print Marni is known for. Demure shift dresses, knee-length skirts and crewneck sweaters, and sharp jackets were finished in crochet raffia embroidery, intarsia prints, sequins and crystals. Prints ranged from graphic - Bauhaus and circle motifs - to naturalistic, like soft summer florals. It was a light-hearted, slighly retro approach to Spring that will keep Marni fans satiated.

Trends: textures, raffia, mixed prints, ladylike.
Colors: aqua, pink, yellow, white, brown, rust.
Key Look: a yellow floral applique number with a structured silhouette, a white crochet look that had cool Summer nights written all over it.
Accessories: ankle strap pumps with gilded python heels, woven bags with windowpane patters and beads; big plastic pendant earrings.
Who Would Wear It: The fearless fashion girl - Margherita Missoni, Giovanna Battaglia, and we think Emma Stone would look great in these looks.

Alexander Wang Spring 2012

Alexander Wang took sport to its sleekest edge with his Spring 2012 collection, which was shown in a raw industrial space - Pier 94 in Manhattan - with stadium-style seating that surrounded four large mirrors. Models walked amongst the mirrors with slick, wet hair wearing performance-inspired pieces: "technical" polos, cargo pants, utility vests, track suits, hoodie jackets, cycling tanks, mesh jerseys, motorcross sweatshirts. Of course, this isn't Nike, it's Alexander Wang, so pieces were done in graphic botanical prints that softened Wang's signature edginess, or layered over sexy swimsuits with seriously sexy accessories, like the white Joan ankle strap mule. It's said that ladylike dressing - thanks to women like Kate Middleton - will dominate fashion's collective consciousness in the years to come. Tell that to Alexander Wang, who brought the season's sporty trend downtown to his turf and injected it with a sleek coolness that not even the most polished of women will be able to resist.

Trends: Sporty, pixelated florals, utility separates, mesh, sheer layers.
Colors: Tangerine, acai, robin's egg, intarsia knits, and botanical ombré.
Key Piece: A cropped hoodie jacket, leather minidress, any of the botanical ombré pieces.
Accessories: Large leather weekenders that looked like golf bags, leather bandannas, the white ankle strap shoes.
Who Would Wear It: His downtown muse Erin Wasson, and girls with a similar edge, like Julia Restoin-Roitfeld.

Cynthia Rowley showed her Fall 2011 to a crowd of fans last night which included Julia Stiles (donning an awesome cobalt dress), Lauren Bush, and Alan Cumming. Star studded indeed, and her collection was just as shiny as models walked down the runway wearing glittery sweaters, sequined jackets, Asian-inspired floral prints, and graphic patterns. There was something for every personality: polished intarsia knit dresses for ladies who lunch, along with funkier pieces - our faves of the night - comprised of shearling blazers, loose graphic gowns, and even a slick velvet suit.

Trends: Shimmery sweaters, velvet suiting, Asian-inspired prints, graphic patterns, intarsia knits.
Colors: Mustard yellow, steel gray, olive, kelly green, deep blue, emerald.
Key Look: A quilted black patent leather jacket paired with an emerald green damask ball gown skirt.
Accessories: Velvet calf boots, rabbit fur scarves, Kool-Aid colored prism pumps, velvet slippers, and d'Orsay pumps.
