Why We Covet: Irene Neuwirth's unique designs always seem to include exotic gems in colors so beautiful you can't stop staring at them. Irene cites the ocean as a major influence in her work, and we can imagine these earrings and a flowy dress taking a walk down the beach at sunset. Drum roll please. From a group of 100 applicants, the Council of Fashion Designers of America has handpicked their top 10 contenders for the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund: Jason Wu, Alexander Wang, Irene Neuwirth, Albertus Q. Swanepoel of Albertus Quartus, Alejandro Ingelmo, Juan Carlos Obando, Swaim and Christina Hutson of Obedient Sons & Daughters, John Patrick of Organic, Sophie Buhai, and Lisa Mayock of Vena Cava, and Target's twelfth GO International designer, Richard Chai.

"The mix of it was very varied," said CFDA executive director Steven Kolb who spoke about the diverse pool of talent, which included a mixed bag of sustainable designers, jewelry designers, and collections. The grand-prize winner will be awarded $200,000 with two runners-up receiving $50,000 each. Announcement of the chosen ones will be made on Nov. 17.

She wore a fitted black Monique Lhuillier gown that hugged her baby bump, and she accented the look with emerald and opal Irene Neuwirth earrings. Reese was dressed down in jeans and a tank when she arrived on the East Coast with husband Jim Toth last night. The couple are just a few of the stars at the annual event, which brings together actors, journalists, and politicians.

We like to think of the CFDAs as the fashion industry's Oscars, and last night, the council announced its 2012 nominees. Joining Marc Jacobs and Proenza Schouler's Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez for the big womenswear designer award are Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen for The Row. Last year, the sisters swooped up the Swarovski Award for womenswear. The big announcement and stylish soiree happen in June, but for now, check out the full list of nominees:

Womenswear Designer of the Year: Marc Jacobs, Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen for The Row, and Proenza Schouler's Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez

Menswear Designer of the Year: Patrik Ervell, Billy Reid, and Simon Spurr

Swarovski Award for Womenswear: Joseph Altuzarra, Chris Peters and Shane Gabier for Creatures of the Wind, and Suno's Max Osterweis and Erin Beatty

Swarovski Award for Menswear: Antonio Azzuolo, Todd Snyder, and Phillip Lim

Swarovski Award for Accessory Design: Tabitha Simmons, Pamela Love, and Irene Neuwirth

The Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to Tommy Hilfiger.

The Fashion Icon Award will be presented to Johnny Depp.

The International Award will go to Rei Kawakubo.

Oscars' Red Carpet Trends: Shop the Stars' Bold Earrings

Last night's Oscars had some gorgeous accessories moments, and we're jonesing to get our hands on the stars' sparkling red-carpet earrings. Busy Philipps wore Irene Neuwirth earrings, and we found a smaller, less expensive (but still an investment) version. Reese Witherspoon wore Neil Lane emeralds, and we found these for under $100. Tassel earrings are a must thanks to Natalie Portman rocking a pair from Tiffany's; for Spring we like this version in turquoise. Finally, Gwyneth's Louis Vuitton multicolor seahorse earrings were so fun, we need a pair for ourselves, in the form of these peacocks ($48). Click to shop!
