The Rise of Weight Watchers in the 1960s

This week on Mad Men's "Dark Shadows" episode, Weight Watchers serves as a type of therapy for Betty Francis, who can definitely use it. Boredom, jealousy, and insecurity dominate Betty's life as a 1960s housewife on her second marriage, and she's turned to bags of Bugles to pass the time. Now determined to lose the weight, the former model turns to a new diet plan gaining popularity with women like her, Weight Watchers. Considering Betty's mother-in-law already tried to push diet pills on her, which contained amphetamines at the time, the group meetings are the responsible approach to weight loss for Betty Francis.

If you think Weight Watchers was a phenomenon of the '80s or remember Duchess Sara Ferguson as its spokeswoman in the '90s, you may have been surprised to see Betty attending meetings way back in the '60s. Jean Nidetch, the founder of Weight Watchers, got the idea for the weight-loss method after struggling herself to lose and keep off weight with diets and pills. Jean, who had weighed as much as 214 pounds, lost 20 with a diet prescribed by the New York City Board of Health, but couldn't keep it off. So in 1961, she decided to hold meetings with other women facing the same issues with weight at her home in Queens, NY. By Oct. 1962, she had lost 72 pounds.

Thanks to her success, Jean's meetings took off, and she went from having them every week to multiple times a day. She soon recruited other group leaders, like the one we saw running Betty Francis's meetings, who had previously lost weight with the program and continued to keep it off. In 1963, Jean and her husband Marty incorporated the business, and by 1965, they exported the franchises to Canada, Puerto Rico, Great Britain, and Israel, with 102 in total. Changes would come in the '70s, with a psychologist coming on and exercise being introduced, and in 1978 the company was purchased for $100 million by another brand featured this season on Mad Men: H.J. Heinz.

In 2010, Weight Watcher's founder published her autobiography, The Jean Nidetch Story: An Autobiography, which came after her 1972 book The Story of Weight Watchers. The autobiography is described as the story of Jean's "personal struggles, rags-to-riches rise, and sunny, can-do attitude." If only Betty had a hint of a sunny disposition. Instead, her all-consuming jealousy is casting dark shadows.

We do it in the car, on the train, in front of the TV, on the phone, and even in bed. For too many of us, snacking has become so automatic that our brains barely register the hand-to-mouth motion. And it's not as if we're all reaching for diet-friendly apples: A 2010 study from the University of North Carolina found that most of us eat nearly 600 calories a day-roughly a third of our food-in snacks rather than meals.

"The business plan of the modern food company has been to put their foods on every street corner, making it socially acceptable to eat 24-7," says David Kessler, MD, former commissioner of the FDA and the author of The End of Overeating (Rodale, 2009).

6 Ways to Stop Overeating

The result has been a nutritional disaster. In their natural state, whole foods may be high in fat or sugar, but they're rarely high in both. Today we have man-made snack foods with a tantalizing combination of fat and sugar rolled into one. "Foods have become so 'hyperpalatable' that they're now capable of hijacking our brains the same way that nicotine and alcohol do," says Ashley Gearhardt, the lead author of a Yale University study on food addiction.

The South American beer company Brahma brought Jennifer and Casper down for the celebrations, but she managed to break from the partying for a yacht day with Casper and friends. Jennifer and Casper have since returned to LA, where she's been busy. She attended last weekend's Oscars, presenting onstage with Cameron Diaz and reuniting with Casper at the Vanity Fair afterparty. J Lo's also been occupied with American Idol. She and fellow judges Randy Jackson and Steven Tyler helped narrow the field down to 13 remaining contestants last week.

Mariah Carey Returns to the Stage For the First Time Since Having the Twins

Nick Cannon led Mariah Carey inside NYC's Gotham Hall last night. Mariah was decked out in a tight black dress to take the stage as part of a cross-country event. PR company Caesars Entertainment hosted their "Escape to Total Rewards" series, which saw Mariah sing in NYC, Maroon 5 perform in Chicago, Mary J. Blige belting it out in New Orleans, and Cee Lo Green rapping in LA with Lil Wayne.

It was Mariah's first concert since the birth of her twins Moroccan and Monroe Cannon back in April of 2011. The twins weren't there, but Mariah thought about bringing them. Mariah told the crowd, "Do you love them babies? 'Cause I do . . . I really wanted to bring them here tonight, but Monroe is sometimes shy and takes a while to warm up to an audience. Rock and roll! Nah, but it's late. It's time for them to be asleep." Earlier in the day, Mariah made a cameo at another promotional event. Mariah Carey christened Disney's new cruise ship, the Fantasy. She was declared godmother of the vessel in front of a star-studded NYC panel that included Nick, Jerry Seinfeld, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, and Tim Gunn.

J Lo and Fergie Get the VIP Treatment at Rio's Carnival Celebration

Jennifer Lopez joined boyfriend Casper Smart and her manager Benny Medina during last night's Carnival parade in Rio de Janeiro. She was invited to the annual celebration as a guest of Brazilian beer company Brahma and wore the company's bright red shirt while partying in a VIP suite. J Lo wasn't the only star flown in for the party. Fergie danced the night away from Devassa's, another beer brewing giant, viewing lounge.

J Lo and Casper's romantic getaway comes on the heels of their loved up Valentine's Day stroll in Malibu. She's spending as much free time with her man as possible, though that might get more tricky next month when American Idol's live shows begin airing twice a week. Idol won't be the only place to see J Lo on TV in the coming weeks. Jennifer and her ex Marc Anthony teamed up to film their reality competition ¡Q'Viva! The Chosen, which premieres on Fox March 3.

She's not expected to perform or participate in Carnival, but beer company Brahma is promoting Jennifer as their special VIP guest. Back in the States, Jennifer will star in two primetime shows on Fox starting next month. In addition to Idol, her reality show with ex Marc Anthony, ¡Q'Viva! The Chosen, will begin airing on March 3.

Check Out the Top Contenders For Best Cookbook of the Year

Thousands of cookbooks were published in the last year, but which ones are really worth buying? The International Association of Culinary Professionals, or IACP, tackled the question as it announced its cookbook award finalists for 2012 today.

Among them: plenty of cookbooks from top restaurant chefs, like Jean-Georges Vongerichten, John Besh, and Andrew Carmellini, as well as new books from reputed publications such as Fine Cooking and Cook's Illustrated.
