Designer Spotlight: Kate and Kass

Raised in a family of film and music aficionados, it was destined that Anya Teresse meld her influences from her parents, Kate and Kass, into her passion of designing. From the time she was 12 years old, Kate and Kass designer, Anya Teresse, started using her lunch money to buy vintage clothing.

Drawing inspiration from classic old films and strong female figures from the past and present, Teresse designs clothing filled with strength, quirk, and femininity. Plackets, pleating, and pin-tuck detailing are apparent with each piece named after her influences such as the late and great Jackie Onassis and Jane Fonda. Her 2008 Fall collection encompasses a beautiful selection of vintage florals and feminine tones along with a couple modern pieces. My favorite? The sleek and chic batwing Michelle Obama jacket.

Sneak Peek! H&M's Tribute to Marimekko Collection

Jackie O. first put Finnish textile brand Marimekko on the map when she wore their brightly-patterned dresses during JFK's 1960 presidential campaign. H&M decided to honor that tradition by digging into the vibrant Marimekko archives and bringing back the bold retro prints for their Tribute to Marimekko collection, in stores April 10.

Swimsuits, dresses, scarves, tops, and bottoms will all be available in vivid color combos like red and pink, olive and orange, and red and turquoise. Plus, the prices are right: A one-piece swimsuit is marked at $35, and an apron dress goes for $50. Perfect for that island vacation you were thinking about.

Fab Redux: O Jackie O!

Calling all Jackie O aficionados! Your former first lady of pill box hats, oversized sunglasses, and little skirts suits would proudly wear a silk shantung sixties A-line coat just like this one, which comes in a size medium; I doubt she would have paid $27 for hers though.

This coat is such a classic. Can you imagine how chic it would look with a little bit of hemline peeking out underneath? It would be beyond...

Not many people know about one of Parker Posey's best roles ever. In the film The House of Yes she plays a fabulous albeit slightly deranged girl with a dangerous obsession with Jackie Kennedy Onassis. She demands to be called Jackie O, wears sharp little suits and tops them off with pill box hats. She ends up being a lunatic, but she's fabulous along the way. No wonder she emulated the iconic first lady; Jackie O was the cat's meow.

The widow of U.S. president John F. Kennedy, Jackie O, as the tabloids dubbed her, remains an American icon of high style and grace. From the aforementioned pill box hats, to mini shift dresses, to caftans, to flats, and who can forget her biggie O sunglasses, she has forever put her stamp on style. As well, she was no doubt the most fashion forward first ladies. Not only was she buds with Valentino, Gucci named the "Jackie" bag after her which sold a record 6,000 pieces when relaunched in 1999.

Known for her elegant sophistication and her historical interest in the White House, in 1968, five years after JFK's death, she married wealthy Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis. After Onassis' death in 1975 - sad! - Jackie settled in Manhattan and began working as an editor for Doubleday, a job she continued until her death in 1994. She was buried next to Kennedy in Arlington National Cemetery. May her style, grace and strength live on.

Happy 45th, Valentino!

This past weekend, while showing his Fall couture show, Valentino celebrated his 45th anniversary in the fashion biz - quite the accomplishment...bravo!

It all started in 1961, when Valentino Garavani dedicated five evening gowns to Jackie Kennedy, and she become a loyal client - she wore Valentino when she mourned President Kennedy, and she wore Valentino when she married Aristotle Onassis.

But in his 45 years of fashion, Jackie O hasn't been the only woman wearing Valentino for an important event in her life: Julia Roberts, Sophia Loren, Jane Fonda, and Hilary Swank have all accepted Oscars in Valentino dresses. Elizabeth Taylor was wearing Valentino when she met Richard Burton. Valentino outfitted Princess Diana to help her transform from shy girl to princess material.

The man has been around - at 75, his contemporaries Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Dior, even Coco Chanel - have long passed on their legacies to other designers. But Valentino's not ready to stop yet - he continues to quash rumors of his retirement - as he told The Telegraph: "I am already working on my next collections." Let's hope there are many more collections yet for Valentino!

On Our Radar: Designers Inspired by Grey Gardens

If you're going to watch HBO's Grey Gardens, look forward to seeing a bevy of beautiful (and kooky) costumes worn by Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange. For those of you who don't know, Grey Gardens follows the eccentric, isolated, and crazy lives of of "Big Edie" and "Little Edie" Bouvier Beale, aunt and first cousin to Jackie Onassis, played by Lange and Barrymore.

As for the costumes, they'll be dazzling since they mirror the Beales' unique sense of style. "You’re recreating iconic people. [The style] has been covered so many times and in so many different ways by designers,” said Grey Gardens costume designer, Catherine Marie Thomas, who also mentioned that many of the costumes were found at various vintage shops while others were virtual knock-offs from the original documentary. Such looks include a floral brown and yellow maillot worn by Drew Barrymore which is the same print as the original. “We were lucky that a fan of Grey Gardens had collected that bathing suit,” said Thomas. In fact, designers have been so inspired by this movie, they've created pieces replicating the Beales' one-of-a-kind style that spanned from the 1930s to the 1970s.

If you're looking for an effortlessly chic costume this year, look no further than Jackie O. Unfortunately she left us in 1994, but her legacy and style will live on forever. Among the signature pieces in Jackie's closet were oversize round sunglasses, pillbox hats, pearls, a khaki trench coat, black flats, bow headbands, and cropped pants. Clearly this woman loved fashion and the fashion world loved her back. Whether she was performing her first lady duties or vacationing on a yacht with her second husband Aristotle Onassis, Jackie was always put together - the world never caught her in sweat pants. Strut a day in this amazing woman's shoes; it might just change your fashion mentality forever.

Fab Blab: Celebrity Stylist Robert Verdi Gabs About Michelle Obama Style

Robert Verdi and I go way back. I first met him when I attended my first New York Fashion Week, when he was still host of Full Frontal Fashion on Metro TV in New York. The year was 2000 and he was asking my stylish roomie and me about our outfits. For Fashion Institute of Technology sophomores, that's a big deal. Plus, he went to F.I.T. too so we just gabbed and gabbed. Verdi is still very much around styling Eva Longoria, interior designing for the stars, hosting television shows and speaking to us about our next first lady's style at the Juicy Couture 5th Avenue store opening party. He's not the gushing type, and he spoke a bit about the Jackie O comparison people have been making. Nonetheless, interesting stuff. Listen up!

“Here’s the skinny: She looked like a lava lamp [after Obama's acceptance speech] and we all know that. I didn’t like that light bright dress and I think she could have made a better choice. I like that she wore an American designer, I think she should continue to wear American fashion and speak the style of the nation in her public appearances and then move towards an international flavor."

People have been likening her to Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis who was a grand dame, of course, an iconic American fashion. But the similarities are that they both like fashion and they both embrace contemporary style. The difference is that at Jacqueline Kennedy’s time, style was really something that was distant from the people. So she wore Gucci and Halston and people couldn’t go to H&M - they couldn’t go to Juicy Couture. I think Michelle does the same thing. She does contemporary fashion but what’s contemporary today is much broader and much more affordable. I do hope that she kind of polishes it up and wears more stylish versions because she’s worn some, like I said, provincial things.”
