Fashion That Makes Us Sad: $2,000 Jeans!

Check out Shahrzaad's retail rant about expensive designer jeans in our Fashion Stylist group. I feel you, girl.

Just last week we read that the price of designer denim was dropping. Granted, many big name jeans still sell for $200, and some people rationalize that price for a basic wardrobe staple they wear several times a week. I myself have fallen victim to fashion stupidity and shelled out over $200 on Sass & Bide jeans. They're gray stretch denim, and are my favorite pair I've ever owned. Maybe after wearing them for four years non-stop, I might get my money's worth. Though I'm not the type of person who has 40 pairs of jeans, I have about six and wear them to death, so I don't mind spending a little more. That said, the most recent pair I bought cost $70. It is a recession after all! So imagine how annoyed I was to see this new pair of jeans by Acne, adorned with some type of modern body armor, selling for $2,000. Those ridiculous things had better protect you - they cost more than several months rent!

J Brand Hussein Chalayan Circuit Jean: Love It or Hate It?

ICYMI, Hussein Chalayan partnered with J Brand to deliver a collection of forward jeans. This J Brand Hussein Chalayan Circuit Low Rise Zipper Jean ($258) is one of them. It's different from other skinny jeans due to the bunching at the center of the leg. I can't see it being flattering on many body types, but it would work for an experimental gal. Are you that gal?

There are some funkier-than-funky jeans out there right now. What started with a few holes has now taken off into all-out shreds, colorful paint splatters, psychedelic tie-dye, see-through mesh, lace-insets, and so on. One of my favorite denim brands, Siwy, takes the prize for designing some of the most daring denim - these Sheer Mesh Skinny Jeans ($242) are '80s sexy but only fit for bold fashionistas. How Much Is Too Much When It Comes to Shredded Jeans?

Seeing Audrina Patridge's crazily shredded jeans made me wonder: how much is too much when it comes to shredded jeans? Surely everyone has their limits. Since I'm not into the overly '80s thing, mine is three medium-sized shreds, max. I don't like my denim too brash. I'm curious, what's your limit when it comes to shredded jeans?

The Look For Less: J Brand Out of Control Tie-Dyed Jeans

This one's for all you ballsy girls, myself included. These J Brand Out of Control Jeans ($209) are just that - OOC. The dark tie-dye rinse is an uptown ode to its hippie origin, and I'm sweet on the slim straight leg. Yes, Balmain has reignited this whole craze, and I can't get enough. However, my wallet won't budge for such a fleeting trend.

These Divine Rights of Denim Tie-Dye Jeans ($65) share the same characteristics without the hefty price tag. Now, I can use the extra moolah to purchase this tough shouldered Zara blazer to complete my Balmain-inspired ensemble. If this look is too '80s for your taste, try pairing with a white tee and heels a la Audrina Patridge. It's too cool for school.

Paige Lou Lou Tulip Jeans Land Exclusively at Ron Herman

Paige Premium Denim has been working for months on its new style of jean - the Lou Lou Tulip Ankle Flare Jean ($199). It's three parts skinny jean and one part flare, which means the leg is super fitted all the way down through the calf like a skinny and then flared right before the ankle. It's nicknamed the tulip for its upside down take on the flower. Two washes are currently available exclusively at Ron Herman. "Denim trends are constantly evolving. Our mission is to create new classics and the Lou Lou jean is a true original that fits," said designer Paige Adams-Geller. Do you dig it? Look of the Day: Gingham Girl

Sneak Peek! Current/Elliott Fall '09

For Fall '09, Emily Current and Meritt Elliott mixed together inspiration from circus and Victorian life to create a quirky cool collection of denim. Seriously, where else can you a find a rugged Victorian jacket? For the upcoming season, the duo's famous boyfriend jeans were nowhere in sight, and instead replaced with an array of skinny jeans and wide-legged cuts in dark vintage washes. Pretty cute, but what really caught my eye was their dope selection of denim jackets and tops. My favorite piece has to be this perfectly tailored Sargent jacket - I adore the shrunken fit and greenish gray wash. Fashion epiphany! Current/Elliott just inspired me to wear more denim up top and less on bottom.
