Jill Stuart Blurs the Line Between Edgy and Fresh For Fall

Avant-garde looks are impressive sights to behold during Fashion Week, but sometimes it's the more wearable ones that turn out to be the most memorable. And Jill Stuart's Fall 2012 show falls into the latter category. Odile Gilbert (for Kérastase) explained how models walked the runway with "sexy, but touchable" hair that was "natural and real." As for makeup, the palette consisted of stand-out purple shadows paired with a hint-of-color lip hue. The outcome blurred the line between slightly edgy, yet fresh and approachable.

Jill Stuart's feminine interpretation of Fall was a botanical experience blooming with florals in all shapes and sizes. The show, attended by stylish celebs like Olivia Palermo and Nikki Reed, highlighted the designer's unapologetic feminine flair, with pretty party dresses - the floral dresses with the delicate lace detailing and Peter Pan-collared little black dresses were the highlights of the show - and luxe ladylike outerwear. Adding a modern effect were leather touches throughout; pencil skirts featured leather panels and coats were trimmed with thin leather piping. The latter showed an outstanding leather-trimmed navy coat paired with trousers, floral top, and fur collar. We can already see the front-row celeb attendees checking off their wish list . . . Jill Stuart Does Boho-Chic Beauty at Its Finest

While most runway looks can be adapted for everyday wear, sometimes catwalk hair and makeup are a tad too avant-garde for the mainstream. Such was not the case at Jill Stuart's Spring 2012 show. Wearing floaty pastel frocks, models were given bohemian waves and washes of pink or orange lip color for a truly wearable look that's easy to try at home.

For the hair, Kerastase's Odile Gilbert created a volumized base with the brand's Volumactive mousse. Once dry, Lotion Densitive and Double Force hair spray were applied for texture and the hair scrunched to enhance wave and movement. To add a few playful touches, hair was then deep-parted with one side rolled back into a side-swept fringe. In addition, a single hidden strand behind the ear was braided, so that "when they [the models] walk, it comes out," explained Gilbert.

For the makeup, Diane Kendal went for a '70s-inspired, "sophisticated bohemian" look. After rimming the inside of the eyes with a soft black kohl liner, she applied a black cream liner on the top lash lines, blending to diffuse. And if you've ever wondered how to make a stained lip look last, Kendal has the answer. Of the pink and orange shades featured in the show, she advised, "It's just a wash of color, but because they're neon, it makes it very bright."

Jill Stuart debuted a super feminine, super gorgeous collection for Spring 2012. Using shades of pink, mint green, citron yellow, and pops of red, Stuart designed delectable sheer drop-waist pleated dresses, refined salmon-hued short suits, and peplum tops. Quilted skirts and jackets added a textural quality while bird and palm tree prints furthered the whimsical aesthetic of the collection. Down below, Stuart caught our attention with a bevy of amazing patent, metallic, and colorblock platform pumps. A beautiful collection that celebrated Spring's colors and dressing like girl.
