2010 Spring Paris Fashion Week: Christian Dior

John Galliano started his Christian Dior Spring '10 show with a literal bang as gunshots and theatrical screaming laid out the framework for his film noir-inspired collection. Set against a gritty, warehouse scene, models with wavy tresses and red lips strutted down the runway in an array of sensual, lingerie-like silk gowns, camisoles, peek-a-boo lace dresses, silk shorts, and and beaded gowns. His ode to '40s Hollywood glamour continued with sharply tailored trench coats - a staple then, a staple today - tiered skirts, corsets, and I even spied a couple of ankle socks paired with sky-high sandals. So Fab.

To add a modern touch to his throwback collection, Galliano paired jackets with leather pants and leggings. Bows, beads, and vibrant sheer organza also injected an interesting flair while multicolor floral prints and gold lamé struck a chord for those in need of extra pizazz. It was all so dramatic. There's a reason I will never tire of Dior.

Which hot shoes tickled your fancy? Which heavenly handbags made you pant? During my runway research I accumulated some more favorite looks, stand-out pieces, awe-inspiring jewels, and simply cool honorable mentions. Thakoon's canary fur-collared coat atop luxe black separates is what fashion dreams are made of. Beam me up, Scotty!

No Fall glimpse would be complete without a preview of some of the most captivating shoes to trot down the runways. The boot of the season is no doubt the over-the-knee, while wicked platforms and cutesie pumps rule, too. Heels got a lot of play - curved, pin straight, studded, wooden. And textures were wild: brocade, woven leather, super stretch, rich suede, ruffled. It's time to experiment. Stare again at these John Galliano pom pom lace-ups? Well, I nevah!

2009 Fall Couture: Christian Dior

Glamorous, and a touch garish, Galliano leads Couture week with a provocative showing at the Dior headquarters. Innerwear played a major role in this film noir. Corsets, garters, hose, slips, camis, and brassieres all hung out exhibiting a high-class peekaboo show. Classic lingerie hues like nude, black, and cream whispered alongside bold red, pink, chartreuse, leopard (and zebra) print, lavender, and juicy tangerine. Dramatic toppers, ladylike bags and fine jewels added to the highly feminine Dior aesthetic. Skirts were a favorite - tulip, sheer, bubble, tiered - and sometimes even absent. Dior still caters to the lady, but this lady's inner exhibitionist has risen.

Marion Cotillard and John Galliano and the Mystery of Handbags

I can't live without my bags. After all, it's where I store my daily necessities, and in the case of clutches, my bare necessities. But you don't have to take my word for it.

In a recent interview, French actress and Dior face Marion Cotillard dished about the most important thing in her handbag. “I have this little black book that I write things in. It’s sometimes dangerous things you have in your mind that you put in your little black book and it’s not as dangerous anymore,” said Cotillard. Sounds tantalizing, can we have a peek?

John Galliano's take on handbags is equally sassy, stating, “It is part of their charm, their secret weapon. Who knows what’s in there - keys, wallet, phone. That is all to be expected. Who’s to say what door that spare key opens; why she has her passport tucked in when she’s only going up the road and whose phone number she has scrawled on the back of an envelope . . . I love the unknown - and the what might be.”

Fab Flash: The Lady Noire Affair, Featuring Marion Cotillard

Marion Cotillard is bringing her sultry je ne sais quoi to Dior in more ways than one. In addition to headlining its Lady Dior ad campaign, Cotillard has been chosen to star in the brand's mini movie, The Lady Noire Affair. “We wanted to capture the glamour, the intrigue, the heroine and the mysterious allure that radiates around her,” said John Galliano, Dior's creative director. “Marion has brought the Dior woman to life. She is incredible.”

The six minute mini-thriller, directed by Olivier Dahan, shows Cotillard running after a mob of gangsters in Paris with, of course, her Lady Dior bag in tow. Scenes of a kidnapping, struggle, mysterious package delivery, and cryptic phone calls are also involved - exciting! Check out the film on May 20 at ladydior.com.

2009 Fall Paris Fashion Week: Christian Dior

John Galliano created a '20s inspired Fall collection filled with Indian and Asian nuances for Christian Dior. After I got past the somewhat blinding backdrop, I was able to focus in on Galliano's gowns and two piece suits. He played it safe with streamlined, feminine cuts but made up for it with bold colors, textural fabrics, and most prominently - bold prints. "I'm sure Mr.Dior would have loved these prints," said Galliano when talking about his use of Ikat prints.

Galliano's frocks ranged from hot pink mod with modified bubble hemlines to floaty silk chiffon creations in beautiful jewel tones. His two-piece suits were more structured and showed variety through different prints and colors. Also notice how Galliano edited his use of furs - other designers are all over them for Fall - by sparsely spreading them on hats and coat trims. All together, a merry, mixed bag from Galliano. By the way, we couldn't resist showing you this major buttage shot on the runway! Tee hee.

Compare & Contrast: Heidi Klum, Oscar's Lady in Red

Last night, as I was covering the 2009 Oscars red carpet, I got déjà vu. Out walked Heidi Klum in her red Roland Mouret number - and blam - flashback to her Oscars look last year. Of course, the silhouette of the dress was entirely different, but it exuded the same futuristic aura and was the same fiery red color. And, her jewels were pink again! Let's dissect Heidi's 2008 and 2009 Oscars looks shall we?

Dress: John Galliano made sure Heidi stood out on the '08 Oscars red carpet in this red, larger-than-life Dior gown. There is nothing shy about it - it's as red as red gets, has a huge collar, long side trains, and futuristic vibe. Oh, and Heidi chose red to benefit women's heart health.

Jewelry: It's apparent the Super loves the combination of red and pink. In 2008, her pink jewels from her own line complemented her red gown to a tee. She donned dramatic red and pink drop earrings, matching bracelets, and a red and pink ring.

Dress: Heidi went down the same red path this year by wearing a red dress in honor of her Diet Coke Heart Healthy campaign. Roland Mouret created this frock, which is not as voluminous, but just as in-your-face and futuristic. It also has a heavy sheen. Once again, the collar is the focus, but the skirt is equally attention-grabbing.

Jewelry: Red and pink it is again. Heidi chose to further sass up her red dress with light pink accessories. Like last year, the earrings were the focus, but stacked bangles and rings were also lavishly loud.

Freida made her Oscar debut looking like a million bucks in a sapphire, one-sleeve gown by John Galliano. I'm loving its subtle beading and graceful tiered skirt. You feel me?

Fab Ad: Christian Dior Spring '09

For Christian Dior's Spring '09 campaign, John Galliano chose Super Gisele Bündchen to show off his sexy collection. The ad, shot by Craig McDean, depicts Gisele wearing a modern macrame LBD and killer heels. I like how she works it for the camera in a complicated yet cunning pose. The tribal accessories and beige backdrop make Gisele stand out like an amazing, Amazonian queen. However, I have qualms about those short bangs - yikes. What do you think of this ad?
