The Hollywood Awards Gala, the first event of award season, summoned a star-studded cast in LA last night. Charlize Theron, Zooey Deschanel, Diane Kruger, Julianne Moore, and Kate Beckinsale all livened up the red carpet with their chic ensembles. Charlize and Kate opted for slimming black, Diane looked angelic in white, and Zooey and Julianne coated themselves in color.

I have to admit there's a lot of fashion's favorite color — black — in this week's favorites. But, to keep things lively, there's also a daring red Versace gown and a gorgeous teal draped Vionnet dress. It's a pretty well-rounded bunch, actually.

Nothing says chic like dressing in all black. This darkness makes for instant drama and sex appeal. There are no rules to styling this trend, so get creative when putting your outfit together.

I wonder if Julianne saw Michelle Obama in her Thakoon red and purple print dress when she wore it at the Democratic National Convention. Needless to say, it's a cute little shift — from Thakoon's '09 Resort collection — appropriate for both political functions and film festivals, where Julianne wore a shorter hem version. Michelle adorned her neckline and was comfy in black flats, while Julianne opted for chunky nude platforms.

I have always loved Julianne Moore — I think she is Hollywood's most talented redhead. Amber Waves made waves at the Cannes Film Festival in this black and blue Lanvin. The ultra-chic blue silk satin dress with ruffle neckline under a black silk tuxedo blazer suited her perfectly.

Sometimes the simplest ideas turn out to be the most brilliant. As Stefano Pilati explained the inspiration for his Spring collection: "I just started with three thoughts: blazers, sweatshirts, and a vaguely preppy idea, and then it went into thinking about goddesses, stars."Well, it worked — to say his jersey sweatshirt inspired bustier dress was a hit of the season would be an understatement. What's even more astounding is the variety of women that have fallen in love with it.

I love how versatile Yves Saint Laurent's strapless grey dress is; you can dress is way up or way down. Julianne opted to dress hers up with standout jewels, and sleek hair and heavy makeup. Model Audrey Marnay went a more understated route in leggings and tousled hair.
