Fab Flash: Louis Vuitton Stays Afloat Despite Economic Crisis

Despite the current economic downturn, luxury brand LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton stays resilient as its sales figures show profits of over $17 billion dollars to date.

Though profits aren't as high as earlier this year, LVMH, which houses its namesake line along with other high-end labels such as Celine and Givenchy, reports a 9 percent growth in its business. Other top French retailers report up to a 10 percent loss in sales. In fact, the only decline experienced in the LVMH business is with watches.

“We are in a strange situation. It’s more a lack of confidence from retailers,” said LVMH finance director, Jean-Jacques Guiony, who states that retailers are being overly cautious with their spending.

All of this makes one wonder: Does LVMH have that magic staying power, or are the wealthy not affected by one of the worst economic crisises in history?

Fab Flash: LVMH Wins Over eBay in Counterfeit Goods Trial

Don't mess with fashion giant LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton.

After a two-year trial, a French court ordered eBay to pay up for selling counterfeit items on its online auction site and for selling genuine goods outside LVMH's retail channels. The penalty was a whopping 40 million euros, or $63.2 million at the current exchange rate.

This all came about when prestigious brands including Louis Vuitton, Givenchy, Fendi, Emilio Pucci, and Marc Jacobs had complained about the sale of knockoff bags and clothes on eBay.

Pierre Godet, an adviser to LVMH Chairman and CEO Bernard Arnault, said the Paris court's decision was, ''an answer to a particularly serious question, on whether the Internet is a free-for-all for the most hateful, parasitic practices.'' In rebuttal, eBay said that LVMH is trying to crack down on Internet auctions merely because it is uncomfortable with the business model, which tends to cut out the middleman.

Sounds like both parties are still heated, but for now, the courtroom has cooled.

Kate Moss was back on the runway this morning to walk in the Spring 2012 Louis Vuitton show. She also took to the catwalk for her longtime friend Marc Jacobs last season when she memorably strutted her stuff while smoking a cigarette. Many famous faces were on hand to see Kate's latest turn and Marc's new designs. Nicole Richie and Joel Madden popped over to France after spending a weekend in London. Rachel Zoe, Anna Wintour, Uma Thurman, Alexa Chung, and Olivia Wilde were also there. Nicole was evidently impressed to see iconic Kate in the flesh. She tweeted, "Watching Kate Moss close the Louis Vuitton show just killed me." Kate's relationship with Marc and Louis Vuitton was cemented when she inked a deal with their parent company LVMH's Fred jewelry brand. In fact, Kate held a reception for friends at the Ritz hotel last night to celebrate the launch of her new necklaces, rings, and bracelets. Her husband, Jamie Hince, wasn't able to attend, but Kate held court with other pals like Christian Louboutin, Lou Doillon, and Gareth Pugh.

Kate Moss rocked a floral jacket and white jeans as she left the Ritz in Paris today. The supermodel hasn't walked the runway or sat in the front row at any of this season's Paris Fashion Week shows yet, but her appearance in France may mean that's about to change since tomorrow marks the last day of the stylish festivities. Kate and her husband Jamie Hince were frequent fixtures on the scene at London Fashion Week late last month, partying and taking in the latest collections. Kate was seated next to Kristen Stewart at the Mulberry show and she also lent her support to up-and-coming designer James Small as he showed his Spring 2012 menswear collection. Kate might have started her career on the catwalk, though in recent years, she's expanded her brand as a designer. Her collaboration with Topshop was a hit internationally, and she's also celebrating the launch of her new jewelry line with LVMH's Fred. The pieces, based on her tattoos, became available on Oct. 1.

Kate Moss will create a jewelry line for Fred, a company owned by LVMH, based on her many tattoos, which include an anchor, a moon, a star, and more. The 22-piece collection will be out in Fred stores on Oct. 1, with a starting price around $475.

According to WWD, Bernard Arnault is currently is in serious talks with Marc Jacobs about becoming the new designer for Dior, but where does that leave Arnault's other big brand, Louis Vuitton? Apparently, Phoebe Philo is said to be first in line to take over the title at Vuitton, and, if she does, she will also maintain her position at Celine.
