Red Leather Pants Shaping Up to Be a Hot Fall Commodity

Cropped leather pants seem to be the season's must-have style, and if you're bold enough, red is the leather color of choice. We first spotted Katie Holmes in the sexy style, followed by effortlessly chic Elle Macpherson, and just last night, model Lydia Hearst wore her own pair to a Chanel event. We love the look styled with a chunky oversized sweater and little heels, a la Elle's look, but for Winter we're happy to swap in midcalf booties to make it more weather-appropriate. We did a bit of searching, and J. Brand's leather pants ($895) fit our bill: soft lambskin, super skinny silhouette, and a 30-inch inseam to hit just above the ankle.

How Gwyneth and Demi Polish Up Their Leather Pants

We saw two killer leather pant looks from Gwyneth Paltrow and Demi Moore last week; and we're going to break it down step-by-step in case you've been wanting to get on the leather trend, but you're not sure how. Gwyneth went for a polished city chic look with her leather pants from The Row, while Demi opted for a more casually sexy look.

The Tops: Gwyneth chose a graphic top that picked up the color and edginess of the leather pants, but added polish and tailored crispness with a sharp collarless jacket in demure gray. Demi went for a short-sleeve sweater- better to show off her arms - adorned with two glamorous sequined stripes.

The Shoes: Keeping with her city polished look, Gwyneth chose simple black ballet flats. It's a nice play with the cropped bootcut shape of her pants, and it keeps the look from being too sexy. Demi's black pumps were an ideal, and sexy, complement to her skinny leather pants, and it dressed up the sweater.

The Accessories: Both ladies kept accessories to a minimum, which is smart when trying to keep leather pants looking polished. Gwyneth chose a long chain necklace and little else, while Demi chose a sporty black bag and a handsome husband.

We had a moment of fashion déja vu seeing Victoria Beckham in skinny leather pants, a slim blazer, and killer heels while in New York City yesterday. Victoria, who is always giving us some chic new outfit to gaze upon, has worn this uniform several times before, in September and last February. We depend on go-to outfits in our closet, so it's nice to see that Victoria does too. Do you have a uniform?

It takes a while to warm up to leather pants because of their motorcycle-biker connotation, but surprisingly, a lot of you would wear them. My philosophy is less biker, more rocker, with a feminine twist. I have a pair of liquid leggings, but pants are cool because you can wear them with more cropped tops. These Paige Denim Black Label Skinny Leather Pants ($398) would be heavenly with an airy ivory chiffon blouse and a loose cardigan. But since I don't need real leather, I found a faux pair that's equally chic and not as pricey.
