Trend Alert: Come on Baby, Do the (French) Twist

What do stars like Katy Perry, Amber Heard, and Rihanna have in common? They're all fans of a no-fail, classic coiffure: the French twist. And they're not alone in their updo choices. At Fall 2012 New York Fashion Week, several designers, including Naeem Khan, Thakoon, Rachel Comey, and Lela Rose, all featured the elegant look in their collections. Each version was gorgeous, and thanks to the talented hands of the stylists who created them, had its own unique spin.

At Naeem Khan (upper left) and Rachel Comey (lower left), flirty eyeliner played well with these twists. But for the former, Bumble and bumble's Laurent Philippon opted for a "slouchy" style, making sure the tousled look wasn't too "hairdresser-y," and for the latter, models' looks were similar, but finished with a more polished touch. As for Thakoon (upper right), Kérastase's Odile Gilbert looked to Audrey Hepburn for inspiration, creating a style that incorporated faux bangs in the front. And at Lela Rose (bottom right), celebrity stylist Ted Gibson also toyed around with fringe-line detailing, forming an eye-catching roll off to the side. What's not to love? Color-emboldened graphic prints and architectural evening dresses dotted Lela Rose's ladylike Fall collection. Drawing inspiration from Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, the looks ranged from daytime dressing in graphic plaid to evening wear with more obvious nods to the movement of Calatrava's work. The first half of the collection unfolded with a '60-inspired palette; rust, gray, and amber hues washed over knits and printed skirts until the line gave way to prettier fare. In tribute of 9/11, Lela Rose played John Lennon's "Imagine" to a crowd that, at times, even sang along. It was a good start to a show that kicked off with a hopeful and happy message. While her inspiration was the "neon graveyard," namely the unrestored and broken signs seen in Las Vegas and Coney Island, her collection was far from decrepit. Instead, muted neon hues, washed-out voile, and chipped-effect embroidery - using Guipure light bulb lace - were crafted into whimsical polka-dot dresses and colorblocked sheaths and separates. A couple of lightly quilted dresses that looked like a broken glass mosaic were also reminiscent of a carnival funhouse. For accessories, the designer punctuated the carnival theme via printed wedge sandals and cap-toe pumps from her Lela Rose for Payless collection. 2011 Fall New York Fashion Week: Lela Rose

Lela Rose, known for her feminine cocktail dresses and bridal gowns, took an artful turn for Fall. Using the abstract paintings of Gerhard Richter as her inspiration, Lela applied graphic brushstrokes to sheath dresses and skirts. Even the combination of colors and textures - a sheer-paneled top sat above a wine-colored feathered skirt and knee-high socks - had a graphic motivation behind it. Lela's use of fabrics, which were pretty unto themselves, brought the artistic idea into focus, like veiled tulle that looked as if it had been brushed across the models' decolletage or the embroidered mohair and metallic silks that gave the collection a complex richness. There were simple highlights as well, including a sharp caramel-colored peacoat and a gorgeous camel coat with a sea green shell.

Trends: Graphic prints, brushstrokes, metallics, jacquard, feathers, sculpted shoulders.
Colors: Aubergine, sea green, camel, crimson, ombré.
