Love It or Hate It? Liberty of London's Lady Hat Stands

During my recent trip to the UK hosted by Visit London, I made a pilgrimage to luxury department store Liberty on Regent Street. If you missed all the stateside buzz about Liberty during their Target collaboration, Liberty is essentially the Barney's of London. So it's no surprise that the flagship store is a space as luxurious and beautiful as the products it sells. In the scarf room, I noticed these vintage-looking lady hat stands peeping out from the walls. Personally, I think they're funny, but a gal standing beside me called them "frightening." What do you think?

Sneak Peek! Kate Moss For Topshop Spring '09

Have you set your calendars? Kate Moss's Spring line for Topshop hits virtual racks this Thursday. Also big news for you lucky New Yorkers: the first US store opens the same day. For her ninth collaboration with the British retailer, Moss teamed up with Liberty print designers to create a special concoction of feminine prints to go along with her flirty fringe and rock-girl offerings.

"I love wearing prints, particularly in Summer and they've proved a real hit in my past collections," said Moss. "Collaborating with the print studio was an amazing experience. The capsule range features original color combinations exclusive to my Spring collection."

Kate will also debut her first lingerie endeavor with a smattering of cotton bras and lace panties. Ooh la la.

Liberty

A feminine print of small garden-party florals. First popularized by London's Liberty & Co. department store. Often gives off a sweet, country vibe. Can be found on dresses, skirts, scarves, and even lingerie. The print is so popular, it made its way onto Nike sneakers. The Spring catwalks - specifically Marc by Marc Jacobs (left) and Cacharel - were filled with liberty prints.

Fab Flash: Kate Moss Collaborates With Liberty

When there's news about Kate Moss, you know I'm on it. Word has it Kate Moss has teamed up with London-based Liberty's print designers for her upcoming Topshop collection. That means we can expect a flurry of Kate's dresses to be made in Liberty's flirty floral prints, seen below. Come Spring, look for the special logo sporting both Kate and Liberty's emblem. The collection will be available at Topshop.com. This has cute written all over it.

Obama Compromises on Contraception

Despite the fact that 99 percent of women who have ever had sex - religious or not - have used contraception, the Obama administration's decision to make birth control free under all employer health insurance packages has caused a controversy. Today, the White House announced that it will make a change to its new policy to accommodate religious institutions, such as Catholic hospitals and universities, who do not want to cover prescriptions like the pill. Under the compromise, religious employers would not have to offer free birth control. Rather, insurance companies themselves would have to provide free contraception to workers at religiously sponsored institutions if the worker requests it.

The original policy, similar to laws that already exist in states like California and Oregon, would have required groups affiliated with religious institutions, like hospitals, charities, and universities, to provide insurance plans that cover birth control for free. Churches themselves would be exempt. But some religions, like the Catholic Church, oppose all forms of birth control, and leaders, especially the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, put pressure on the White House to change course, threatening to make this a major campaign issue.

So far, it looks like the compromise has pleased both sides. Planned Parenthood's President Cecile Richards said it "does not compromise a woman's ability to access this critical birth control benefits," and Sister Carol Keehan, the president of the Catholic Health Association of the United States, says she is "pleased and grateful that the religious liberty and conscience protection needs of so many ministries that serve our country were appreciated."

If I were to wear a scarlet letter it would be T.

T for tardy. T for turd ball. T for totally inept mother.

We are late for school with such alarming regularity it’s embarrassing. The last time we were on time, after a mini snowstorm that excited my children enough to urge them into their snowsuits and outside at 6:30 a.m., we got to school five minutes early to find it dark and empty. Delayed opening. I was apparently the only mother who didn’t get the memo.

Calling Charlie Brown…

Being late for school brings up a vicious brew of conflicting emotion in me. On the one hand I just don’t care. Life is short. Far too short to risk traumatizing your children with a bullwhip and terrorizing morning walkers and squirrels, not to mention my own white-knuckled children, speeding our way to school like Toad on a motorcar bender each weekday morning.

On the other hand I am ashamed, deeply embarrassed, to be “that mom.” All the other moms can do it, even the single ones. Why. Can’t. I? What’s wrong with me?

I complained about this once to a woman from South Carolina who I met on my Guatemala trip and she told me her school started at 7:30. She also made it clear her kids were never late.

Never late.

Jump Into Spring's Girly Jumpsuit Trend

Jump around! Showing no signs of slowing down, the jumpsuit trend appears to be here to stay. Celebs have been seen strutting around in sexy versions of the one-piece garments, but moms can find fun, ruffled, and floral versions for their tots. Using Liberty of London prints, and some traditional smocking, these long pant versions of the classic romper, give lil ones a polished, put together look, without having to worry about shirts coming untucked while they play. One word of advice though – steer clear of the one-piece garment if you're in the midst of potty training your tyke. They aren't particularly practical for frequent trips to the bathroom!
