Androgynous Male Model Andrej Pejic Works a Push-Up Bra

"Did I ever think I had enough booty to advertise a push-up bra? No," androgynous male model Andrej Pejic tweeted earlier today. The Australian gender bender recently signed a lingerie ad contract with Dutch retailer Hema and shot these ads for the chain's push-up bra.

Ignoring possible enhancements via photoshop or bra stuffing, the ad's approach has some logic to it. If the push-up bra can give a man some realistic curves, why not you? And perhaps casting an androgynous man in a commercial ad, and not just an edgy editorial, also represents a progressive step against rigid gender norms.

Still, not everyone thinks these ads send a positive message. Critics in the Netherlands reportedly worry they could negatively influence a young woman's body image by holding up a literally boyish figure (minus the fake cleavage) as the ideal. How the Victoria's Secret Idea of Sexy Has Evolved

Visually pleasing underwear became popular at the end of the 19th century, but it took until the 1990s for Victoria's Secret to celebrate lingerie with its annual fashion show. The brand's spectacle of scantily clad models was initially held before Valentine's Day, but in 2001, the show was televised and moved to the start of the holiday shopping season. That's not the only thing that's changed over the years. The lingerie modeled has evolved from high waisted and shiny to made-for-TV costumes straight from a feathery fantasy.

Some have complained about the show's indecency, and it was canceled in 2004 after America was scandalized by Janet Jackson's wardrobe malfunction at the Super Bowl. But since then the show has gone on, giving us at least one take on what's considered sexy through the years. Sexy Vintage Lingerie Ads

Curvaceous models are prepping to bare it all at the Victoria's Secret fashion show, as the lingerie company's annual show hits the runway today. And just as the show has evolved a lot since its inauguration in the '90s, lingerie itself has changed by leaps and bounds (thankfully) since it was first introduced in the late 19th century.

We have some groundbreaking women to thank for where lingerie is nowadays. British fashion designer Lady Duff-Gordon, "Lucy," was one of the first pioneers of lingerie, creating underwear that was more about being beautiful than practical and constricted in corsets. And Mary Phelps Jacob patented the first brassiere in 1914 (conveniently two days before Valentine's Day). But it was Frederick's of Hollywood, founded in 1947 by the inventor of the push-up bra, Frederick Mellinger, that really put the sex in lingerie.

French Lingerie Line Targets Little Girls

A new French lingerie line targeting children and teens is causing quite an uproar. Called Jours Après Lunes, this "loungerie," as the company calls it, is intended for girls ages 4-12 and features striped, ruffly, and bow-adorned underwear, camis, and boyshorts. There's a baby line, too, but there's nothing scandalous about onesies.

While you could see easily this loungerie sold for adult women at Victoria's Secret, the pieces themselves aren't that outrageous. Where the line gets blurred is with the company's photos. The shots of the little girls and preteens on the site look more like setups for boudoir photos than pictures of children. The girls are wearing jewelry, makeup, and tousled bouffants, while making pouty faces and posing like women.
