Fab Body Guide: Elongate Yourself

You've all heard that black makes you look slimmer and taller. While that's true, it's not the only trick in the book. There are a dozen other ways to elongate yourself without having to look goth. Take a look at the real-life examples below. For The Spirit LA premiere, Eva Mendes chose a Bill Blass maxi that, because it grazed the carpet, made her appear taller. Vertical stripes, as shown in the center editorial, and long cardigans, like on Katie Holmes, can also do the trick. Proceed for more tips.

Maxi Dresses: Like in Eva's case, maxi dresses give the illusion of tallness because they provide one straight line from top to bottom, without any interruptions.
Long Cardigans: It's a misconception that everything long makes you look tall. But a long cardigan, past your waist, is one casual way to do it. The darker the color the better.
Long, Wide-Leg Trousers: Be sure to find a style that grazes the floor, and preferably covers your shoes. They're never to be worn with flats, only high heels!
Platforms: It's no secret that platform shoes can literally add inches to your height. For a more subtle approach, choose a shoe with a hidden platform.
Vertical Stripes: Unlike horizontal stripes, which cut you off, vertical stripes keep going and going.

Trench Coats: A thigh-length trench coat is a slick, sophisticated way to appear tall, especially when worn with over-the-knee boots. Avoid anything longer than the knee, please.
Over-the-Knee Boots: Speaking of over-the-knee boots, ones with high heels will give you an extra boost. Just be sure to wear them with demure clothing; you don't want to look sketchy.
Dark Colors: Black, dark brown, navy, dark gray - these moody hues and others like them are right for looking slim and tall.
Long, Skinny Scarves: Throw on an extra long, extra skinny scarf to take the focus away from your outfit.
Turtlenecks: These give the illusion of a long neck, so they're perfect for those who have a short one.
High-Waist Styles: Whether its skirts, shorts, or pants, if you have a flat tummy, high-waisted styles can make your torso appear inches longer.
Opera Gloves: Unlike cropped gloves, opera styles go past your elbow and make your arms appear super slender.

Look of the Day: Uncomplicated

You couldn't tell from the cute fit, but lilmoke14 is rushing to meet her mom for lunch. When in a time crunch, it's best to stick to basics and she pulls it off perfectly. Her look is simply uncomplicated. I like how the skinny brown belt and matching sandals pull everything together in one fell swoop.

Dress Me Up: The Sexy Librarian

I can never tire of the sexy librarian look. Is it the soft long cardigans? Or maybe it's the notion that you don't have to show a lot of skin to look sexy. Whatever it is, this look paired with some high heels, a la Burberry Prorsum's Resort collection, seems to do the trick. Note how soft fabrics and high heels keep you from looking frumpy, and yes, socks are optional!

Fab Finding Follow-Up: Game Night

Game night is the perfect time for me to relax and catch up with my loved ones while engaging in some friendly competition. This month, we played one of my favorite board games, Cranium. I asked you to help me find a cute and comfortable outfit that wouldn't get in my way of winning.

Ladies and ladies, I have found the perfect transitional piece: a long & lean cardigan. We're all itching to show a little more (pale) skin after months of covering up and keeping warm, but what about when the sun goes down and the fog drifts in? Layering is the trick and a long boyfriend cardi is the solution. Equally cute with black stovepipes or a full skirt; moody weather take that!

Bright lights. Overcrowded fixtures. Bad, bad, clothes. Everywhere. This is often the situation when you enter a Forever 21 store. The sheer number of bad pleather leggings and neon animal-print blouson tops is enough to send any fashionista running the other direction.

However, the recessionista looks beyond the piles and racks and rows of bad, to the hidden, unexpected gems that lurk just on the other side of that pair of red denim hot pants. It takes skill, believe me. There are so many things in F21 that look great on the hanger and terrible on your body, but also plenty of things that look questionable until you try them on.

The honest fact too, is that F21 is a hit or miss situation. I've walked in there, looked around and walked out empty handed in under five minutes many times. But every now and then, I go in, find two arm-fulls of potential deals, and walk out an hour and a half later, $100 poorer and utterly pleased with my new purchases.
