There's a very cool project going on called Made, which allows influential designers to source their designs to East African communities, where local artisans have been taught the skills of jewelry production and make fair wages for the jewelry they create.
All the jewelry is available at the Made online shop, and the pieces are very affordable - earrings run $10-$58, necklaces run $10-$278, and bracelets run $16-$90. These Kifundo earrings are really cool and made of glass and bone beads hanging on leather strings.

I've always wanted to meet the man behind my favorite Alexis Bittar jewels — I finally had the pleasure to do so at his recent Neiman Marcus trunk show. Alexis filled us in on what's going on in his world right now. He's one busy bee; his San Francisco stay was for a mere 10 hours because he had to fly to Vancouver for an appearance at Holt Renfrew.

Highlighting local talent is always nice, so allow me to introduce Gold & Citrus, a new jewelry line based in San Francisco. Founders Sara and Rich are in this together: Sara is the jewelry designer, Rich is the website designer. The former creates made-to-order pieces out of everything from beads to gemstones, feathers to antique sequins.

I've heard of some crazy things in fashion but never jewelry made out of dead bugs. Apparently, two 17 year olds, Katheryn Maloney and Brady Cullinan, of Sandwich (ha), MA, are selling jewelry made out of cicadas (a type of insect with large eyes) that are swarming Cape Cod this Summer. For $10 and a trip to the local farmers' market in Sandwich, you can have your very own earring or necklace made out of lacquered-insect corpses.

I've thought of a few things to do with old magazine pages (use as wrapping paper, wall art, book covers, etc) but making jewelry has never been one of them. That's why jewelry designer Lenore Solmo is one unique chick. Her cuffs, bracelets, earrings, rings, and necklaces, made from fashion magazine pages, can be found at her store on Etsy from $32 to $86.

Did you know Rachel Roy wasn't allowed to watch television growing up? But she was allowed to watch classic movies, hence her fascination with classic Hollywood glamour. Rachel's Spring collection wasn't frilly and fantastical — it was a nice dose of sleek precision.
