Maria Sharapova Talks Tennis, Travel, and Her Sweet Tooth

It's official, NYC has tennis fever! The courtside champs have been spotted around the Big Apple as they're in town for this week's US Open Tennis Championship.

Selfers mingled with tennis greats at the 12th Annual BNP Paribas Taste of Tennis including James Blake, Rafael Nadal, Mardy Fish, and Vera Zvonareva were also in the house.

I caught up with Maria Sharapova and Novak Djokovic at HEAD's Head-to-Head event (say that 10 times fast) to help kick off their new campaigns, including one where number-one ranked Djokovic does his best courtside Sharapova impersonation.

Sharapova, a self-proclaimed bag lover, recently designed a few stellar tennis bags (pictured after the break) for the premium sports equipment company HEAD. Her favorite part is that they don't automatically scream "I'm a tennis bag;" they'd also work as a cute weekend (or overnight bag the way I pack!).

She sat down to share some of what keeps her going during tournament season.

Wimbledon Head Wants Less Grunting: Double Standard or Not About Gender?

Head of Wimbledon Ian Ritchie said officials would prefer less grunting from the tennis players. According to Ritchie, the vocal players are spoiling the game for the fans and distracting other players, adding, "We have discussed it with the tours and we believe it is helpful to reduce the amount of grunting."

Since he brought up the noise level after Victoria Azarenka had 95-decibel grunts (nearing Maria Sharapova's record 105 decibels) during this year's championships, we have to wonder if this is about the grunting in general or specifically women making noise. Azarenka even defended her cries, saying, "I can't change it, it's part of my breathing system and it's just natural and something I've done since I was a kid. . . . Grunting is part of the game." Grunting is an integral part of the tennis-playing process for women, and if the roles were reversed and something male sports players did to improve their game was deemed annoying or distracting, I seriously doubt officials would talk about nixing it. Do you think this issue is a double standard against women?

Maria Sharapova flashed her brand-new diamond out to lunch with fiancé Sasha Vujacic in Los Angeles on Saturday. The tennis all-star and Lakers team member announced their engagement last week, and now we get to see her flashy ring which is rumored to be worth $250,000. The two have been together for about a year after first going public last November. Maria, 23, is a few years younger than her husband-to-be at 26. She'll be joining the club of Lakers wives including Khloe Kardashian. Maria started October with a dissappointing early elimination from the China Open tournament, but she's ending the month on a high point. Congrats to the happy couple!
