Marni Collaborates With Ex-Colombian Prisoners For a New Chair Collection

This month, Marni's presentation at the Salone del Mobile 2012 will focus on a new collection of chairs crafted in Colombia by ex-prisoners. The collection includes 100 chairs featuring metal bases and multicolored PVC threads. The silhouettes reflect the popular seating style used by local Colombian families but have unmistakable Marni features like colorblocked patterns and on-trend colors.

The chairs are also a part of the "L'Arte del Ritratto" project, which features them in a photo exhibition created in collaboration with the photographer and filmmaker Francesco Jodice. The chairs are used as props for a series of portraits of Marni employees from different departments. The collection of chairs, along with the photo exhibition and accompanying video, will be presented at the Milan Marni boutique during Salone del Mobile from April 18-22. After Salone del Mobile, the chairs will find homes in various Marni boutiques worldwide, where the local employees will have a chance to pose with the famous seats to keep the exhibition going. Proceeds raised from the sale of the chairs will be donated to the institute ICAM of Milan, a project that supports children of imprisoned mothers.

Marni designer Consuelo Castiglioni showed a world of colorblock, structured silhouettes, and small-scale prints for Fall 2012. '60s mod styling got a dose of Eastern influence on the runway - models were clad in bright shift dresses, trousers, and skirt suits, almost always topped with a boxy coat and cinched at the waist with wide leather belts. The designer also offered up slick coats in luxe exotic looks like python, patent leather, and plaid-print furs, which proved visually stunning alongside head-to-toe black and gold jacquard and floral-print ensembles. Hopefully, you haven't tired of the hosiery trend yet; white tights were layered under each look (even pants), then finished with Kabuki-style platform Mary Janes for a vaguely Oriental feel. The Marni for H&M line doesn't hit stores until March, but we have something that might satiate your hunger. Check out the gorgeous video commercial shot in Marrakech and directed by Sofia Coppola, starring British beauty, Imogen Poots. “I always thought [Marni] made interesting fashion and that the prints were always unusual, and they really have their own look. It doesn’t look like anything else,” said Coppola. The video shows an array of the collection we haven't seen before, including dresses made in Marni's signature dotted prints, along with metallic floral pants and tops. Just when we think H&M has hit the pinnacle of fashion collaborations, the brand tops itself with yet another amazing Italian team-up. Fresh on the heels of its successful collaboration with Versace, H&M has announced that it will team up with Marni on a collection that will launch on March 8 at select stores and online. The collection will feature womenswear - think printed full pleated skirts, dresses, cropped trousers and jacquard knits - menswear, shoes, bags, and accessories. "I wanted to create a true Marni wardrobe by revisiting all our favourite pieces in signature fabrics and prints," said Castiglioni. "As always, I love juxtaposing prints and colors, mixing modern tribal with Bauhaus graphic and adding sporty utilitarian elements." Consuelo Castiglioni emphasized Marni's eclectic approach to femininity for Spring 2012, with a collection that was filled with architectural, modern takes on ladylike shapes, presented in the bold color and print Marni is known for. Demure shift dresses, knee-length skirts and crewneck sweaters, and sharp jackets were finished in crochet raffia embroidery, intarsia prints, sequins and crystals. Prints ranged from graphic - Bauhaus and circle motifs - to naturalistic, like soft summer florals. It was a light-hearted, slighly retro approach to Spring that will keep Marni fans satiated.

Trends: textures, raffia, mixed prints, ladylike.
Colors: aqua, pink, yellow, white, brown, rust.
Key Look: a yellow floral applique number with a structured silhouette, a white crochet look that had cool Summer nights written all over it.
Accessories: ankle strap pumps with gilded python heels, woven bags with windowpane patters and beads; big plastic pendant earrings.
