Oprah, Anna Wintour, and Patrick Robinson to Host Costume Institute's American Woman Exhibit

Let's see, this year we explored models as muses, the year before we dodged superheroes. 2010's Costume Institute will be all about American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity. “The story of the American woman is really a story of the power of fashion to shape and define identity,” said Andrew Bolton, curator of the Costume Institute. The exhibit will examine our country's fashion between 1890 and 1940 with articles transferred over from the Brooklyn Museum Costume Collection. To go with the all-American theme, Oprah, Anna Wintour, and Gap's Patrick Robinson will act as co-chairs for the event. Two of the most influential people in fashion today, Anna Wintour and Balenciaga designer, Nicolas Ghesquière, along with a whole bunch of A-List celebs, gathered at the Metropolitan Museum's Costume Institute to Celebrate Paul Poiret last night. Everybody who is anybody attended the Gala and they were dressed to impress.

Paul Poiret was a fashion pioneer who freed women of corsetry and adopted shocking colors and exotic references of the Ballets Russes to the haute couture. The height of his career was pre-World War I France when he was dubbed the undisputed "King of Fashion." As we know fashion is cyclic, so not only are we going to be seeing more of his influence on the runways but his pieces are now official works of art.

A lot of you showed interest in fashion's emerging Great Gatsby direction so if you happen to be in NYC between May 9 – August 5 be sure to check out this exhibit!

On Our Radar: Costume Institute Database Goes Online

The Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art is a must-see stop in NYC. It features over 30,000 costumes and accessories from around the world. Don't plan on visiting the Big Apple anytime soon? No worries. Thanks to the Met, we can now view the Costume Institute from the comfort of our own homes at www.metmuseum.org.

The online database, which will be constantly updated, allows the public to view collections from the likes of Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, Lanvin, and Salvatore Ferragamo to name a few. From Europe to Africa, this exhibit has it all. Check it out.

Ever gone to a museum and caught yourself being rude because you were talking to your museum buddy too much while perusing? Fear no more. The Metropolitan Museum of Art wants to know what you think about their latest Costume Institute exhibition and they want you to share it with the whole world. They have embraced the enthralling world we know as blogging with blog.mode: addressing fashion where you can comment live from the eight computers set up in the galleries. Then, the rest of us can hear what you had to say about a black jersey Commes de Garcon dress from the debut collection of 1983 or a pair of Damien Hirst-designed polka dot ankle boots by Manolo Blahnik. As expected, there was some superhero talk floating about at last night's Metropolitan Museum's Costume Institute Gala. Playing into the theme of the exhibition, "Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy," celebs had fun talking about which superhero power they admired the most. Christina Ricci wished she had the power to read minds while others wished for flying and invisibility.

Staying true to their style, Karl Lagerfeld and Donatella Versace replied with, "Myself," when asked which superheros they envied and Marc Jacobs topped the night off by sporting a pair of Superman undies to the event - how fitting. Me? I would like to have the power to shop to my heart's desire.
