Fab Ad: Gap Fall '08

I will always love the Gap. I mean, cotton basics? Cozy knits? Preppy staples? Oh, and I love their lip balm. Change is already underway at the company, with Patrick Robinson as head designer under the gun. This Fall campaign, shot by Mikael Jansson, is quintessential Gap - black and white, laid-back poses, American inspired. But the cast and the styling are fresh.
The idea behind the campaign is to “Create Your Own GAP” by mixing and matching classic pieces to create an outfit all your own. The celebrities and models are styled to suit their personal tastes, and the list is vast: Liv Tyler, Georgina Chapman of Marchesa, Fabcon Clemence Poesy (pictured here), Ginnifer Goodwin, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Scott Schuman (of The Sartorialist), Cecilia Dean (cofounder and editor, Visionaire), models Chanel Iman and Lily Donaldson, and more. This exhibits a cooler, more undone Gap with a focus on fashionable, functional garb. Are you impressed?

Fab Ad: Chloé Fall '09

I once spoke of the fashion metamorphosis of the house of Chloé and its ad campaign transformation. I feel like when it comes to ads, Chloé has done it all: streets, deserts, beach, and now Spanish wheat fields. This is the second major ad campaign for designer Hannah MacGibbon, and she has stuck with photographer Mikael Jansson. What she hasn't stuck with are the same models as Spring. Instead of Anna Maria Jagodzinska and Toni Garrn, she chose Kasia Struss, Sigrid Agren, and Karlie Kloss. Do you dig this or is it way too au naturel?

Fab Ad: Tod's Spring/Summer '09

Gwyneth Paltrow's hookup with Tod's for its Winter ad campaign was so successful, the duo teamed up yet again. Creative director for Tod’s Derek Lam said: "Gwyneth effortlessly embodies the spirit of the international woman with timeless elegance and modern flair - the perfect representation of the Tod's woman." Photographer Mikael Jansson chose the location, a restaurant in the heart of London’s financial district, because the honey and caramel palette complemented the brand. It's interesting to see Gwyneth so tan and preppy, because she's usually fair and funky. She looks healthy and happy. Do you approve of the latest Tod's ads? Fab Flash: Rachel Bilson, Star in Her Own Campaign

Judgement time is around the corner and Rachel Bilson's pulling out all the stops to make her first venture as a celebrity designer a success. The Edie Rose for DKNY Jeans campaign will feature the star in her own designs.

"Our customer has a real emotional connection with Rachel, and she's always on the best-dressed lists, so it seemed like such a win-win for us. Rachel has real personal style and she is very involved in every step. You can really see that in the collection" said president of DKNY Jeans, Kevin Monogue.

The photo shoot, which was shot in New York by Mikael Jansson, features Bilson and models Fabienne Vanderhaeghen, Regina Feoktistova, and Giedre Dukaskaite against a edgy NYC backdrop. "She was really hands-on with the entire process. She, with the help of stylist Tabitha Simmons, made the clothes come to life in such a youthful, authentic way, which is so true to Rachel's own personal style - always youthful, but appropriate" said the creative director of the shoot, Trey Laird.

The ad campaign will run in the September and October issues of Teen Vogue and Cosmogirl magazines to coincide with the launch of Edie Rose for DKNY Jeans line in September. Look forward to a trendy sportswear collection consisting of tops, sweaters, jackets, tees, dresses, and jeans to be sold at department stores including Macy's and Dillard's.

Fab Flash: Marc Jacobs = Andy Warhol

In the June/July double issue of Interview magazine, a modern-day marvel imitates a pop culture legend.

Marc Jacobs appears on the cover of the magazine, which is an ode to the pop artist whose 80th birthday would have been in August. With a platinum wig atop his head, the fashion designer is being compared to the eccentric artist; they both cross bred art and commerce, they have a knack for creating playground-like retail stores and look to other artists for inspiration and collaboration. When asked of the comparison Marc stated "I don't think of myself that way," he said. "Warhol is Warhol. He's practically a god. I thought, 'I'm going to get a lot of hell for this.'"

Whether he gets flak for the cover or not, the photo - the work of Mikael Jansson - will also imprint T-shirts and tote bags to display in the windows of the designer's Bleecker Street store. And it all comes full circle: Proceeds from the Marc/Warhol garb will benefit the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh.
