I made this vegetarian lasagna for my sister when she came home from school declaring her newfound love for the dish. I knew she didn't like "chunks" in her pasta, nor does she eat many veggies in general, so I used the "sneaky" technique of pureeing zucchini, red pepper, carrot, and onion into a smooth tomato sauce instead.

Discovering Papas Rellenas in Miami

Hot off the South Beach Wine & Food Festival, I scoured the Miami International Airport terminal for some viable food options, as I was still - believe it or not - hungry. But my choices were extraordinarily slim, unless I wanted to grab a three-inch-thick slice of pizza sitting under a heat lamp or a pile of greasy lo mein from Manchu Wok.

I continued walking until I came upon an eatery with the Spanish name La Carreta, which translates as "The Cart." I was getting down to the wire on time, so I hastily ordered a salad. That's when I spotted a machine full of empanadas. "What's that?" I asked the guy behind the counter, pointing to a round, puffy fritter. "Oh, it's a Papa Rellena - I like them very much and think you will, too," he told me.

He couldn't have been more spot-on - "loved" would've been a better word. It was shepherd's pie meets hush puppy, a battered exterior followed by a layer of impossibly creamy potato and a center of cumin-scented ground beef. I instantly regretted not having bought another. And as I settled into my plane seat with the latest edition of Saveur, I instantly regretted not adding a Cuban sandwich on top of that. Sigh. Anyone down to go to Miami this weekend?

5 Ways Spending Less Will Create More Happiness

Recently, New York Times columnist David Brooks wrote an op-ed piece about the “Haimish Line.” The Haimish Line is an invisible line sometimes crossed when you go from spending less to spending more - in doing so, Brooks contends, you often sacrifice warmth and connection to attain luxury and space. According to Brooks, “haimish” is a Yiddish word that suggests “warmth, domesticity and unpretentious conviviality.”

An exclusive, white-tablecloth, four-star restaurant where servers disappear and diners are on their Blackberries would be north of the Haimish Line. A small, casual diner on the corner bustling with loud conversations from neighborhood folks talking over each other would be south of the Haimish Line. A new dorm building with a shiny, new, unused lounge would be north of the Haimish Line; the well-worn lounge of ratty furniture that students veer toward would be staunchly planted south of the Haimish Line. The Haimish Line even slices across neighborhoods: densely packed urban neighborhoods where kids run home from school and and people have stoop conversations versus spread-out suburbs of isolated living in separate homes and cars.

Brooks advises that we learn to spend our money well and stay south of the Haimish Line.

I found this essay so compelling because money often buys privacy, space, exclusivity and “luxury”-all of which are the very opposite of “unpretentious conviviality.” In America, the picture of success is a bigger house (where the family is more spread out), moving to the suburbs (with more distance between neighbors), a nicer car (to be more vigilant about spills in), and flying first class (ok, so some things are not worth getting all concerned about “the Haimish Line” over).

Group Therapy: Trouble Making Friends as an Adult

I'm having a huge problem dating, primarily because I have very, very few friends in town: I don't go out. I recently moved back to my hometown and I only know a handful of people here well enough to see if they want to grab a drink on the weekends. I'm not "allowed" to be friends with my co-workers, to the point where if I give someone a ride/run into them out and about, we keep it hush-hush.

It's not like I sit around and bemoan my situation, I have a cool roommate (male, so when we're out together people assume we're together), It's just I know I'm not getting out enough to even meet anyone, much less keep myself from going crazy on Friday night's after hours of Law and Order.

(On a side note - I feel weird going out alone; 1. I hate the stigma, 2. I don't know any bartenders (to keep me company/keep creepers away), 3. I don't want to run into anyone I know if I'm alone, it would be embarrassing. I could always say my friend ditched me, but . . .)

I guess I can always sit in coffee shops waiting for Mr. Right to notice my totally hipster book and compliment my shoes, but until then . . .

Baxter of California and original Parisian cool-girl boutique Colette have teamed up to give California its very own honorary candle: Cruel Summer ($30). While it's fittingly scented with a green floral accord "inspired by the scent and ambience of California," this definitely sounds a little bit more like So Cal to this Northern California girl. Once upon a time, rowing was considered a man's sport, beloved by preppy Ivy League boys and lake fishermen. Times have changed. Here's what happened: we ladies found out it was fun. You know what else is fun? Being toned. And, contrary to popular belief, rowing accomplishes that for more than just your upper body.

Just ask ultra-endurance athlete and World Rowing Champion, Josh Crosby, who created the now internationally practiced Indo-Row workout with partner and fitness developer Jay Blahnik. (They even collaborated with WaterRower on a special Indo-Row Machine that uses actual water.) Though the first classes began in 2005, Indo-Row went global in the last three years and is now offered at over 50 clubs from Equinox and Sports Club LA to The Mayo Clinic's Wellness Center. And, as with any growing trend and especially ones that start in California, Hollywood has caught on. Though the Indo-Row team is hush-hush about A-list clientele, a few names have leaked out like Nicole Kidman, Estella Warren, Kevin Bacon, and Jason Patric.

The Dark Knight Rises Teaser: Christian Bale Is Down, but He's Not Out

We've been hanging on every bit of info leaked from the very hush-hush set of The Dark Knight Rises, and the first preview for the film is no exception. There's a reason why we call this a teaser: a lot of the footage comes from the first two films in the franchise, and the quick clip doesn't give away many details about the final film in Christopher Nolan's Batman series. What we do see is Gary Oldman as Commissioner Gordon, who seems to be fighting for his life in the hospital. Addressing a shadowy figure, he speaks of the evil that has returned to Gotham and pushes the need for Batman to return. Then we get a very brief glimpse of Tom Hardy as Bane as he faces off against Bale in the bat suit. (To top it all off, there's more of that uber creepy chanting we've heard on the website.)

Needless to say, this has definitely whet my appetite for what's poised to be one of the biggest blockbusters of Summer 2012. In the meantime, I'll be holding out for a full-length trailer, but watch and dissect the teaser when you
