Naomi and LV Show Off Their Charitable Side

Naomi Campbell might have had issues with anger management in the past, but she's putting all of that aside for charity. In support of The White Ribbon Alliance, a foundation dedicated to reducing maternal mortality, the Super Model collaborated with Louis Vuitton to sell this hunter green monogrammed Louis Vuitton bag ($2,800) - proceeds from sales will go to the foundation. People say fashion people don’t do anything. "We do a lot," said Campbell, who is the global ambassador for the foundation. The handbag will be available in March.

Photographer Pits Naomi Campbell Against Kate Moss

Naomi and Kate are friends, so I wonder how they'll feel about this tidbit everyone is talking about today. Photographer Nick Knight just spoke with The Times UK about his preference between the two Supers: "Over the years I've felt I want to work with Naomi rather than Kate. I like the fact that Naomi sits less comfortably in society than Kate does," he said. "Talk to Naomi and she is f***ing incandescent with rage that she's not on the cover of Vogue. She puts it down to racism, and she's furious."

Knight's adoration of Campbell shows in his upcoming exhibition, SHOWstudio: Fashion Revolution, where there are huge photographs he took of the Super toting machine-guns, as well as 22-feet sculptures of Campbell.

Is Naomi Posing In Dennis Basso's Fur Ad Hypocritical?

Naomi Campbell has everyone talking again. The once-PETA poster girl has hooked up with fur designer Dennis Basso to model his Fall '09 ad campaign. "During these economic times, we wanted to take the opportunity to be noticed - to show we are here and here to stay," Basso said. Helping him reach his goal was photographer Tom Munro, stylist Patti Wilson, and creative director Giovanni Bianco. The ad debuts in September, and industry sources are estimating Naomi's paycheck to be in the mid-six-figure dollar range. Given her past work with PETA, do you think it's hypocritical of Naomi to partner with a Basso?

My Michael Jackson tribute continues with a long, yet thoroughly entertaining, video consisting of MJ, Naomi, sepia tones, and lots of gyrating. Don't get me wrong - Naomi is pretty smokin', but her hips really help tell this story. Also, don't her little white cap sleeve crop top and white skirt look very Alaia? As one of the model diva's known favorites, it's very possible. My favorite MJ dance sequence is at 3:53 - The Sprinkler! - pretty sure Michael created that move. It's worth studying this video to see Michael and Naomi's synchronized pelvic thrust, too. Don't say I didn't warn you . . .

Step Inside the Model as Muse Exhibit

As you know, this year's Costume Institute Gala was all about models. The red carpet and parties are no longer, but the Met exhibition - The Model as Muse: Embodying Fashion - will remain until Aug. 9. It focuses on iconic models from the 20th century, and features couture and ready-to-wear pieces, fashion photography, as well as video footage. For those who can't see the presentation in real life, here's a look . . .

Best of 2008: The Return of the Supermodel

While it's fun seeing celebrities model high fashion, we were ecstatic to witness 2008 as the year of the return of the supermodel. Claudia Schiffer, Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington, Stephanie Seymour, and our fave, Kate Moss, came back full throttle across numerous Fab ads showing us what separates the super from the model. Past, present, and future; these ladies will always reign supreme.

Biggest Headline of 2008: Model Diversity Takes Center Stage

The issue of model diversity, or lack thereof, thrived in 2008. Good! The first concern was raised in February when a survey concluded that out of 1,584 modeling slots at New York Fashion Week, only six percent went to black models, six percent went to Asians, and one percent went to Latinas. Note that this was after Diane von Furstenberg, president of the Council of Fashion Designers, had urged designers to diversify their model selections the month before. At the end of the month, it was refreshing to see Hermes feature South Asian beauty Lakshmi Menon in its 2008 Spring ad.

In April, more progress was made when Vogue Italia announced its quarterly July issue would feature almost all black models - this was groundbreaking. In late June, the Vogue Italia Black Issue was released and featured models Naomi, Jourdan Dunn, Liya Kebede, and Sessilee Lopez; each of whom had her own cover. If you haven't checked it out, believe me when I say it was all black, all fabulous.

Fast forward to September during the Spring showings at New York Fashion Week. Although there were more multicultural shows, the issue remained. This time, Bethann Hardison spoke on the epidemic and held a discussion, "Race on the Runway," which was attended by models and industry leaders. The battle is far from being over, and change is slow, but sure. Let's hope next year will bring us more Fab face diversity in the modeling industry.
