Fab's Oscar Top Three

What I enjoyed about this year's Oscars was the chance for some red carpet newbies to shine.

Though I was super disappointed red carpet superstars Cate, Reese, and Nicole were either absent or didn't walk the red carpet, it was nice seeing new enthusiastic faces. Especially Benjamin Button nominee Taraji Henson. Every time the camera chose her, she was smiling and bright. Her buttercream Roberto Cavalli confection was absolutely delectable, I wanted to eat it up. The tiered cascading gown also had the perfect size fishtail, not too overwhelming, but still dramatic. I'm sure you also noticed her vintage necklace - 19th-century Fred Leighton. She gave a nod to the red carpet (and added a punch of color) with her burgundy silk Mary Norton clutch.

I didn't realize how much I missed Natalie on the red carpet until last night when she floated by in her orchid pink Rodarte. I started to get bored with all the neutral hued gowns, so Natalie held my attention. The asymmetrical ruched bodice and Swarovski crystal detailing are sweet, subtle touches. She wore simple Kwiat vintage diamonds - vintage studs, a large deco cuff, and stackable rings - all the better to let her lovely hued dress and gorgeous face shine. Her vampy nails added some spice to her sweet ensemble.

Both of the ladies from The Wrestler looked stellar last night; Evan Rachel Wood and Tomei both made our Best Dressed poll. Marisa's dove gray Versace got better and better by the minute. And did I mention she worked it? She had one of the most precise trains and she vogued like crazy; Tomei's got the red carpet thing down. The spirals and folds on the skirt fanned out to create such an awesome effect. Her totally toned arms wore a cool Van Cleef & Arpels diamond and sapphire bracelet while she also showed off a diamond ring and lapis lazuli and diamond earrings.

Oscars Red Carpet: Natalie Portman

Natalie Portman brought some color to the red carpet wearing a Grecian-inspired, orchid pink Rodarte gown. The rainbow of colorful pailettes across the bodice are a special touch. Diamond studs and a sparkly bangle complete her ensemble.

How refreshing to see Natalie Portman in a colorful cool ensemble. The smiley actress arrived at Chateau Marmont in LA in a breezy striped dress topped with a navy cardigan. Her accessories include two-tone Ray Bans, layered bead necklace, yellow flats, and a camo bag. What's especially inspirational here is how her accessories simultaneously complement and clash with the dress. As Tim Gunn says, she makes it work.

Who, what, where (or wear)? These are the questions people had running through their heads when the Spring Fashion Weeks were in effect. We were mostly focusing on the clothes rather than who dominated the front rows, but let us also dissect the guests. Editors, celebrities, and models get invited to the shows in New York, London, Milan, and Paris. One lady who always looked amazing was Carine Roitfeld. Here, at the Yves Saint Laurent show in Paris, the Vogue Paris editor gave new meaning to the term power suit. The serious glare also helps. Shining Stars of the Venice Film Festival

There are stars and then there are shining stars. At the 2008 Venice Film Festival, a slew of actresses and models flew overseas to attend, but only a handful shined. There were plenty of arenas to flaunt their fashions - movie premieres, photocalls, parties - and the likes of Charlize Theron and Natalie Portman went all out. The screening of Valentino: The Last Emperor especially brought out a stylish crop. Enter the Venician red carpet.

Natalie Portman totally wowed me in this origami-pleat asymmetrical white Givenchy frock at the amFAR event at the Cannes Film Festival. The layers upon layers of white waves are gorgeous, and I love how she paired the dress with simple accessories and black sandals - just let the dress do all the talking. Two thumbs up for me, how about you?

Battle of the Lanvin: Scott Thomas vs. Portman

Talk about poor planning. Actresses Kristin Scott Thomas and Natalie Portman both showed up to the 2008 Cannes Film Festival in blue Lanvin dresses. It's bad enough that they're both wearing the same designer to the same premiere, but throw on top of it the fact that they're the same shade of blue. At least there's one difference: Kristin's is long and flowy, while Natalie's is short and fun. Who wins this blue Lanvin battle?
