Toms Shoes Gets Luxurious

Toms Shoes founder Blake Mycoskie has been all around the world, but he's about to embark on a different, more luxurious adventure: he's launching an exclusive holiday collection at Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman this week. "From a design perspective, we were trying to preserve the classic silhouette of Toms, but give an upgraded and exclusive version for the Neiman and Bergdorf customer," Mycoskie said.

Look out for high-quality fabrics like metallic linens for women and silk-tie for men. But just because they're more posh doesn't mean these styles aren't philanthropic. For every pair sold - prices range from $78 to $125 - the company will donate a new pair to a child in need.

Diane Kruger was the host. Jason Wu, the designer. Jessica Stroup, Amber Heard, Katie Cassidy, and Lily Collins - envious emerging talent - the supporting cast. Neiman Marcus, the venue. A small gathering of some Fab favorites occurred yesterday to preview Wu's feminine cool collection. Normally, I would have you choose the most Fab, but, honestly, they all looked awesome in the designer's spunky dresses and ladylike separates. Why did Diane host? Easy: she loves Jason Wu. She compares him to Chanel - his clothes span generations. As well, his creations are "sexy yet traditional." Well said Diane, go behind the seams!

Neiman's Cheap(er) Christmas Book

Neiman Marcus is scaling down the crazy price points in its famous Christmas Book in lieu of the dismal economy, but don't expect to find bargain basement deals. Instead, the luxury retailer has priced 40 percent of the 400 items featured at under $250. The selection of fantasy gifts are also said to to a lot cheaper than last year's selection.

“Our belief is that even in financially challenging times there is a place for fantasy, especially during the holiday season,” said Gerald Barnes, of NM Direct. And that they did offering up a Cupcake Car ($25,000), Mission One Electric Motorcycle ($73,00), and dinner for two with eight prominent authors, including Malcolm Gladwell, Henry Louis Gates Jr. and George Stephanopoulos ($200,000). Pretty cool, but I would be happy enough receiving an amazing pair of shoes or bag . . .

The Donna Dish: "If You Can't Sleep in It, Forget It"

The Donna Karan wisdom continues. After listening to her and Ken Downing at the Neiman Marcus event in San Francisco, I have a newfound interest in draping and defining luxury. Donna also mentioned Michelle Obama ("Michelle Obama is an icon") and emphasized the importance of jewelry when she spoke of her years collaborating with Robert Lee Morris: "Jewelry is important. Accessories are extremely important." Oh, and my favorite Donna quote? "Glamour - I forgot the word glamour!" Here's more Donna dish:

Donna on draping: She always makes her skirts wide at the top and narrow at the bottom. "Draping is how fabric wraps around your body and accents the positive and hides the negative."

Donna defines luxury: There is a difference between seeing something and wearing it, and to her, wearing is luxury. It's the difference of seeing and touching. This year was the most challenging year. It's important to not deny it and have consciousness about it. "I feel luxury is how we care for ourselves and other human beings."

Donna on everyday dressing: "Do you have any idea how many outfits you can create from the same pieces?" Investment dressing doesn't go out of style. She loves it when she sees women wearing her older clothes today.
Donna and her fabrics: "Most of my fabrics are made in Italy with extraordinary technology." A cashmere knits collection is coming out soon; it's based on comfort and ease and includes all sorts of neutral colors.

The Donna Dish: "We've Got a Lot on Our Shoulders Right Now"

Stella McCartney and now Donna Karan - looks like San Francisco is emerging as a fashion center.

When I think of Donna Karan, here's what comes to mind: draping, bodysuits, DKNY, womanly, classic, zen. When I met Donna Karan at a recent event at Neiman Marcus in SF, all those thoughts flooded me. But it wasn't overwhelming because Donna calmed me down with a (zen) fashion mantra: "Fashion is not all about what's on the outside. It's what you wear on the inside that also counts." I pondered that all day . . .

Prepondering, I witnessed an intimate runway show of her Fall collection. The charming senior vice president and fashion director of Neiman's, Ken Downing, served as co-maestro. Donna disclosed that she finds microphones "annoying. They're not genuine." And according to Downing, DK's collection was his high point at Fashion Week. "I love this collection," he said. On with the Donna!

Donna on her Fall collection: Her collection was a reflection of the past, present, and future. It's also empowerment for women. It's not just about designing. It's necessary to be intentionally thoughtful.
Donna on the resurgence of shoulder pads: "We've got a lot on our shoulders right now," DK said, referring to the economy. Ken said, "You can carry a lot more with those shoulder pads." Shoulder pads make hips appear narrower. Nobody gains weight on the shoulders, she said, referencing the cold shoulder dress.

Donna on color: She favors a color palette that's effortless. Grays, black, navy are endless palettes of classicism. It's an inner feeling she can't explain. She is affected by color and light. It's an artistic expression. "Red is like lipstick. An accent that always works." She's also inspired by her trips to Africa, the wilderness, nature, pavements in the city.

Fab Blab: Stella Votes Color For Spring

We heart Stella. This was unanimous at the end of her charming night in San Francisco. It's not every day a designer heavyweight makes her way to the foggy city (why is that?). Neiman Marcus hosted a carnival-themed bash in honor of the designer where fun was in every crevice. A balloon animal-making clown, caricature artist, popcorn, pool, and foosball kept guests amused, while a popup shop with Spring and Fall Stella pieces kept peeps shopping. A nice British touch: Pimm's! We stole Stella away to ask her some Spring-inspired questions. After complimenting one of us on our "lovely warm hand," we discovered that Stella hearts Spring just as much as we do.

Congratulations on being awarded by the National Resources Defense Council of America.

"Oh, thank you!"

Spring is in the air. What do you think from your collection, or in general, is the freshest thing a woman should have for Spring right now?

"I would say a good color. Something to take everyone out of Winter. Wake everyone up. A little flash of color. We have some really beautiful coral dresses and things. And also a whimsical print."

We love your Spring collections in particular. Do you prefer warm-weather dressing?

"I like all the seasons for different reasons but Spring I like, I'm a big fan of Spring, in general. Just in life, it's a hopeful time. You're stepping into Summer, which is lovely."

Fab Flash: Saks Fifth Avenue's Dismal Downturn

Saks Fifth Avenue is one of our favorite online stores, but it's been experiencing major economic woes.

In November, the luxury retailer reported “widespread weakness” with a net loss of $42.8 million. Today, the luxury retailer announced it will be closing shop on all but two of its bridal salons. The two bridal salons left standing will be the New York flagship and the Beverly Hills store. All other locations are set to close sometime next year. Saks will start marking down its bridal collections - which includes designs from the likes of Carolina Herrera, Jenny Packham, Monique Lhuillier , and Oscar de la Renta - in January - future brides take note!

On the flip side, Neiman Marcus reported a $12.9 million profit this quarter. Both retailers seem similar so we wonder why one's doing much better than the other. Care to enlighten us?
