Since it was the finale of <a href="http://fabsugar.com/tag/New+York+Fashion+Week+Fall+2007" >Fall 2007 Fashion Week</a>, the theme of the event was a grand fashion show appropriately titled, <b>Designers for Darfur</b>.</p> <p><SPAN class="inline left"></SPAN> The hosts of the evening were Lydia Hearst Shaw (shown) and Malcolm Harris of Mal Sirrah. The sponsor was Steve Madden who not only presented, but he also provided all of the footwear for the models. </p> <p>The show was beautifully orchestrated and went off without a hitch. Some highlights were: a long flowing yellow dress with a jewel accent, a stunning floor length turquoise evening dress as well as the adorable children walking the runway. All of the clothing was created in Africa's colors; red, green, black/yellow. </p> <p>All the items from the show are being auctioned off on <a href="http://www.ebay.com/designersfordarfur" target="_blank">ebay right now</a>. I adored the white flirty number with crystals on the top and I especially loved the brown tight turtle neck paired with the high waisted multicolored skirt (shown) - very 60s indeed.</p> <p>As for the hair, I've got the inside scoop! I spoke with the hairstylist <a href="/125233" >Fabrice Gili from Frédéric Fekkai</a>, about how he created this look:</p> <p><br class=clear-both /></p> <p><SPAN class="inline left"></SPAN> Begin by adding a bit of <b>Fekkai New Coif Foaming Milk</b> to the hair (this product is coming soon). Next create a deep side part. To get the right angle, take a comb and line one side up with the end of your eyebrow and the other side up with the middle of the crown of your head. The part needs to be pointing upwards so that you can create volume at the crown.</p> <p>Next, back comb the back of the crown (tease it) for lift. Then make a low <a href="/104433" >ponytail</a> and tease just the center of the loose hair. This Fall collection showcased about half of what he does best, and the other half felt forced; an attempt to create something new that just looked awkward. I do feel he completed the task he set out to do: create a collection that is "clean, charming and (with) strong femininity."</p> <p><span class="inline left"></span></p> <p>I loved some of the sharp tailored suiting - a cropped olive green tuxedo jacket paired with a high waisted pocketed full skirt. Not much of a suit girl, this makes me want to be! There were plenty of party dresses and Oscar worthy gowns in fun colors like purple wine, green moss and burnt ochre and classic black. A couple of them had elaborate ruffles that looked a tad too underwater fantasy to me. A refreshing white knee length dress with the perfect amount of ruffles was a pleasant surprise. The woman with roots in bridal, has definitely proven she can deliver wearable ready-to-wear with the same elegance.</p> <p><span class="inline left"></span></p> <p>However, I was left a little depressed after viewing this somber collection. The fabrics were gorgeous: embroidered tulle, metallic brocade, and glossy duchesse satin, but the looks were a hodgepodge of asymmetry, ruffles and tailoring. Too many ideas usually makes for a sloppy presentation. The color palette was dull - the most interesting color was a burnt ochre satin, but this is also a difficult color for many to wear. </p> <p>There was some residual layering from seasons past and silhouettes still managed to be slim. There were a few standout dresses, but they were so because they weren't cluttered with additional pieces and the (awful) netting that was draped over some looks. I did find some creativity in the styling of scarves; scarves worn as hoods and interesting tying techniques. A perfect balance of day and evening, there was something for everyone to covet.</p> <p><span class="inline left"></span>Day pieces were varied; wide legged trousers, knit turtlenecks, tweed suits and expertly cut mini dresses. I didn't really mind the neutral palette of rich tans, browns and greys because everything looked so freakin' luxurious. A favorite look was a cropped fur jacket with elbow length sleeves paired with slim pants. </p> <p>Evening was stunning, as to be expected. Floor grazing gowns swept the runway and I won't be surprised if we see one at the Oscars later this month. I questioned the heavy duty metallic silver one though; it was too blinding to admire the craftsmanship. Most of the gowns' necks were adorned with signature precision beading and nuanced graphic beaded patterns. Also, the palette was the moody black, greys and tans we've been seeing and I kept waiting for some color cameos, to no avail.</p> <p>There were definitely some interesting mentions however. Dresses, both long and short, were pretty pretty with touches like round gold sequin collars and trickling disc sequins. I can definitely picture Nicole Richie in the one shouldered black fringe mini dress. Cream pieces were strong; coats and a really cute high waisted, only slightly tulip, skirt were standouts. Kayne obviously favors the vest-over-dress look with several short and long versions. The dynamo duo behind <b>Proenza Schouler</b> have just proven they can do both mass market and special detailing with their modern flapper Fall 2007 collection.</p> <p>The swingy, vintagey cocktails dresses are sure to be a hit with young Hollywood starlets, and Fab readers perhaps? Shown in jet black beading as well as jewel tone zig zag pleating, these dresses tickled my fancy. And the white ones with black beading took my breath away. As well, wide legged trousers were luxe and jackets and coats were supremely sophisticated. A cocoon silhouette emerged with an emphasis on the shoulder that narrowed down the body. Fur was a power player here, with fur collars and fur-lined hoods. Sportswear was on many designers' minds for Fall and that is Kors' forte. </p> <p><span class="inline left"></span></p> <p>The color story, coincidentally, can be told through <a href="http://teamsugar.com/user/FabSugar/lookbook/130663" >my mod dress I recently wore</a>. Fur was super sized and popped as trimmings and hoods; but the cobalt blue and black fatty jacket was a sight to see (and the model sporting it knows it). His daytime tweeds and suiting was wonderful in luxurious neutral and heather grey with splashes of canary yellow, tangerine and cobalt blue. Speaking of, the cobalt belted shift dress made me swoon. </p> <p>Jackets were sharp, cropped and double breasted and a bit 60s when paired with slim cropped pants. 3/4" sleeves were a favorite touch, and wide trousers with cuffs were straight up power dressing. A black and gold sequined shift dress with feather trim hem was a fun little number. His finale gowns were what fell flat for me; simple, draped column dresses in bland colors. Still packed with ruffled, lacey party dresses, there was definitely more grown up pieces than usual. This is not a bad thing, just different.</p> <p>As expected, there was a rainbow of colors, not expected, they were all toned down. Cream, navy, emerald green, and brown came up in smart day pieces while red, black and teal were more evening. A few really cute prints: a graphic blue and yellow pattern, grey and black plaid, a fruit stripe gum print and an adorable black and tan heart print. There were definite 80s influences - strapless puffed short dresses - and 70s influences - colorful knits and wide brim hats.</p> <p>I could definitely see Chloe Sevigny in the long sleeved cream and black lace belted onesie. Architectural and modern yet sexy, this Fall I may have to invest in one of his pieces.</p> <p>With strong emphasis on the shoulders, the bust and the waist, there was a definite Azzedine Alaïa influence. But it was definitely American sportswear with knit sweaters, boxy coats and sporty touches like zippers, tank tops, color blocking and bold seams. The one shoulder made a couple of appearances; it was refreshing to see it on youthful short, flirty dresses. There was also a Grecian influence, with modern draping. The palette was subdued - putty, navy and black ruled, and a super cute periwinkle plaid brightened things up. A couple of long dresses even managed to pass for day wear - a challenging task. Metallics did pop up, but not blindingly so.</p> <p>My favorite look: this belted shearling vest dress. Gorgeous, flawless looking models sat and waited their turn as makeup artists, lead by Tom Pecheaux, perfected smokey eyes and hair stylist, Teddy Charles, coiffed and curled. </p> <p>The clothing was lined neatly in racks and the red carpet area had a white and silver Luca Luca backdrop. Unfortunately the photo area was packed inside since it was a mere 9 degrees on this frigid New York day. Although cramped, photographers didn't skip a beat as Carmen Electra, Kimora Lee Simmons, Lauren Conrad, Bobbi Thomas, Kelly Rowland, JC Chasez and many more made their fashionably late entrances.</p> <p><SPAN class="inline left"></SPAN>Lucky for me, I had the opportunity to speak with both hair and makeup about their looks for the show. Teddy explained that he and Luca wanted to do something to up-sweep the models hair and keep it off of their necks to show off the details in the clothing. He also felt that sweeping the hair upwards shows off their faces. </p> <p>He began this updo with hair that had been washed the day before. He started with a low ponytail and didn't pull it completely through - in essence he made a loop. </p> <p>With the remainder of hair that was poking out, he used a <a href="http://www.sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml?id=P90611&amp;categoryId=B70" target="_blank">Tourmaline T3 Ionic Wet/Dry Iron</a> to create waves. Then he set hair with a touch of <a href="http://shop.fredsegalbeauty.com/Kerastase-Double-Force-Hair-Spray-P1287C0.aspx" target="_blank">Kerastase Resistance Double Force Hair Spray</a>. Each model only took about 20 minutes.<br /> <br class=clear-both /></p> <p>To read about the makeup used in the show and to see more beauty centric images, read more</p> <p>All of the makeup was by <a href="http://www.maccosmetics.com" target="_blank">MAC Cosmetics</a>. The eyes were definitely the main focus. They were lined in black liner and <a href="http://www.maccosmetics.com/templates/products/sp.tmpl?CATEGORY_ID=CATEGORY15103&amp;PRODUCT_ID=PROD1503" target="_blank">carbon</a>, an intense black shadow was applied densely in the crease so that it looked opaque. It was then blended out with a brush and q-tip to look sheer on the lid. </p> <p><SPAN class="inline left"></SPAN> Over the shadow, <a href="http://www.maccosmetics.com/templates/products/sp.tmpl?CATEGORY_ID=CATEGORY15103&amp;PRODUCT_ID=PROD1519" target="_blank">shadow pigment in dark soul</a> was carefully applied with a crease brush. This is where the intense gold glitter look comes from. Next, lots of <a href="http://www.maccosmetics.com/templates/products/sp.tmpl?CATEGORY_ID=CATEGORY15102&amp;PRODUCT_ID=PROD7223" target="_blank">zoomlash black mascara in zoomblack</a> was applied to the lashes in several coats and no false lashes were used. </p> <p>The face was done last in case the dark shadow fell. It was primed, then concealer and foundation was added. The finishing touch was a drop of <a href="http://www.maccosmetics.com/templates/products/sp.tmpl?CATEGORY_ID=CATEGORY23433&amp;PRODUCT_ID=PROD1507" target="_blank">strobe cream</a> added to the skin to reflect light. Atop that was a dusting of <a href="http://www.maccosmetics.com/templates/products/sp.tmpl?CATEGORY_ID=CATEGORY15108&amp;PRODUCT_ID=PROD9801" target="_blank">Blot Powder Loose</a>. Just a hint of contour was added to the cheeks.</p> <p>Brows had a clear gloss on them to look nice and wet. Lips were a nude color to appear like they were fading into the skin. These sporty looks were shocking and pristine - a jolt of white lightening. Other stunners included a pair of silver metallic rayon skinny pants, a champagne sequin dress with caramel mink stripes and an exquisite white fox vest. Clearly, Luca Luca has no reservations about fur. Evening wear was very alluring and sexy with long, elegant and shimmery gowns. Skin was an accessory with plunging draped backs; a woman would feel just as sexy as she looked wearing these items. There were some 80's references: a high waisted pleated pant with cuffs and a (surprisingly really cute) zip up sweatshirt dress. Coincidence?</p> <p><span class="inline left"></span></p> <p>Sophisticated sportswear, with a European flare, was the message here - as well as a whisper of incognito with models peeking under multi-colored wide and short brimmed hats. Severe suiting started the show; vests and blazers with razor sharp finishes accompanied wide legged pants. Muted black, grey and champagne led to turquoise, crimson and an awesome canary yellow. Duchesse satin and velvet arrived for the evening portion; good 'ol Marc stiff draping and sashing adorned column dresses. Tuxedo dressing was obvious; post-it note pleats added femininity. As shades of grey and red graphic print made a cameo appearance.</p> <p>It was hard for me to choose my favorite look; here is this stunning strapless turquoise velvet gown with a disshelved satin bow corsage. Fashion is repeating itself and we are clearly in the 60s again. We've already caught glimpses of Sienna Miller's Mod looks from <a href="http://fabsugar.com/124512" >Factory Girl</a> and know that stores have been carrying <a href="/44425" >mini shift dresses</a> for months. On to the good stuff...</p> <p>Main silhouettes were swingy 60's inspired pea coats, hot pants and high waisted pants. Patent leather accents, bows and fur trim were key details. There were also playful hoods contrasted with plunging necklines on cocktail dresses. Colors were bold: black, electric blue and purple.<br /> <br class=clear-both /></p> <p><SPAN class="inline left"></SPAN></p> <p>As for hair, think Marcia Brady. Center parts with straight hair that looked neat but not overdone. Hair was loose, not pin straight and teased in the back just a tad to give a messy effect. Most models had very long hair. For those who didn't, they were given the same style sans any extensions or falls.</p> <p>Makeup was also reminiscent of the times. Models wore pale pale lips, which looked almost milky colored and cheeks were also pretty bare. They had a touch of <a href="/25930" >contour</a> to them, but no pop of color at all. </p> <p>Eyes were grey and smokey with heavy black eyeliner around the rims. Mascara was especially dark and thick with tons of added <a href="/125604" >fake eyelashes</a> to add length and thickness. This luxurious, and thorough collection is sure to be a hit with the social butterflies of New York. And probably some Hollywood royalty.</p> <p>It started off with wide trouser looks belted with luxurious knits. Tulip skirts and billowy sleeves created volume; elaborate collars created depth. Fur trim, vests, stoles and Chewbacca boots added lux. These early looks were a bit ho hum, except for a gold and black houndstooth shift dress that caught my eye. The palette was neutral with blacks and browns until evening emerged; signature Oscar ruffled full skirts and streamlined floral print gowns and moody velvet column dresses were aplenty. Beading was creative and showed up on necklines and in patterns. Here is a rainbow of girlie looks; with some dramatic, grown up elements. The color spectrum ranged from brown paired with tans, black paired with blue, orange and punch. There was a mod overtone, especially with shift dresses and patent trim. Reese played with silhouettes - there were cropped pants, dresses with dropped waists, shift dresses, skirts and Bermuda shorts. Evening was a bit heavy for me; beaded black coats and dresses and overpowering metallic items. She made it a point to work with the exciting "Mademoiselle" on some of her collections all the while absorbing her technique. Jackie now has her own line which is no doubt inspired by her mentor. They are classy, creative and extremely elegant. </p> <p>On Saturday afternoon I had the pleasure of attending her show - and at a rather unexpected location. The setting was at Scores West (yes, the strip club) and the theme, "After The Deluge" was influenced by the 30's Bauhaus Movement in Berlin, Paris and New York around the time of WWII. </p> <p>The clothing was delivered in three phases. The first was black, white, grey and silver fabrics adorned with ruffles, patent leather bow belts, fetish bustiers and silk flowers. The second introduced both bright and muted fall colored day wear in softer fabrics accented with sable and silver-fox hoods and trim. The third displayed evening wear in flowy satin jewel tones as well as ethereal silver/gold lame gowns. The collection consisted of an array of suits, cocktail dresses, formal dresses, skirts and tops for both chic young women as well as the older seductress. </p> <p>Although there were a team of hair and makeup artists behind the show, Maria Ashe was the lady with the vision. This made the splash of <a href="/88529" >red on the lips</a> the show stopper. There was also sealant added to the lips to keep them shiny as well as ensure they wouldn't feather, fade or bleed during clothing changes. </p> <p>The eyes were something really special. They were created with the <a href="http://www.beautyaddicts.com" target="_blank">solutionEYES Seduce Palette</a> with heavy eyeliner and no <a href="http://fabsugar.com/find/fabsugar/false+eyelashes" >false eyelashes</a> - just gobs and gobs of <a href="/25016" >mascara</a>, reminiscent of the 30's style of makeup. Next, to create a lacquered effect, white gold lip gloss was applied over the dark shadow as well as below the brow bone as a <a href="/80588" >highlighter</a>.<br /> <br class=clear-both /> </p> <p>Overall, I was very impressed with the collection, it is definitely for a woman looking to make a statement. What looked like extras out of Gangs of New York, models donned loose fitting trousers, shorts, tie neck blouses, and plaids. Neutrals, greys and blacks told a very downtown story. Bow ties, suspenders and fingerless gloves added a dose of poor boy chic. </p> <p>Enter the feminine Phillip Lim girls in chili pepper and turquoise frocks, worn underneath expertly tailored double breasted coats. Loose layers and sheer fabrics penetrate the earlier masculine air. Two black leather jackets shine - one in soft buttery leather, one in patent leather. An optical red dot print emerges, almost out of nowhere, and brings a graphic element into the mix. Time after time, this woman knows how other (all?) women like to dress: practical, chic and feminine. Her Fall collection also put me in the mood for romance - just in time for Valentine's Day.</p> <p>A strong palette of red, black and gold, here was another collection all about the legs. Dresses were the star silhouette and they ranged from variations of her classic wrap, to geometric shifts, to ethnic fancies. A simple, streamlined, deep v-neck 3/4 sleeve boxy dress, in both black and red, were must haves for me. There was also a Spanish influence with the mix of red and black and ruffles - oh, check out the adorable ruffled pumps on many a feet. Coats were strong; tailored coats over simple dresses were my favorite looks.
