Trend Alert: Handkerchief Hems

Fashion is experiencing a hippie revival and I am not protesting this trend. However, I need your help deciding if I like handkerchief hems or not. I already confidently don wide-legged jeans and denim vests, but I'm not so sure about this nonchalant detail. This Jovovich-Hawk for Target Arabesque Halter Dress ($30) is something Lux would have worn in The Virgin Suicides but is it too '70s nostalgia. Thoughts?

Celebrity Style: Katharine McPhee

Katharine McPhee stood out at the LA premiere of I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry in her psychedelic Nieves Lavi dress. Although the colors clash with the red carpet, she still manages to look fresh. I like that she didn't go matchy matchy with the accessories. The pointy pumps are a bit outdated but her confidence makes it work. Don't forget to check out her henna tattoo on her left foot!

Celebrity Style: Joss Stone

Joss Stone has been looking more than a tad quirky lately, especially since her latest album release for Introducing Joss Stone. Pop even chose her as worst dressed several months ago. That's why I was surprised when I saw her looking so ladylike at the MuchMusic Video Awards. I like that she went back to her roots and wore a paisley-print Nieves Lavi frock. Her tie-up sandals don't really match, so I gave her a more stylish pair!

Dress You Up! Vintage Print Dresses

Skip your morning coffee, or tea, and opt for a fabulous vintage print dress. Yes, you could also scour vintage shops, I know that's what members of The Vintage Place!! are thinking. But that's a shopping mission and if you're not up to the challenge this Spring has lots and lots of offerings.

Same with trapeze style dresses, you can wear these with a heel or no heel; but if you want to wear it for evening I suggest a heel and some jewels as the vintage prints tend to dress down the dress (pun intended). For those bold gals out there who are all about colorful prints, have fun with these picks.

Trend Alert: Long Dresses

For those of you gals graced with long legs: get psyched! We all know dresses are hot for Spring and this includes long, flowy, effortless dresses. These particular dresses are slimming, comfortable and sexy. For those of you who are a little more petite, all you've got to do is throw on some wedge platforms and you are good to go! Here are a few of my new favorite long dresses for Spring:

Scoop Printed Tube Dress, $345, is 100% silk and has elasticized tube banding on the chest area. It is available in six different rockin' patterns.

This Nieves Lavi Silk Halter Dress, $350, is made from 100% silk as well and I think is simply gorgeous. It is a long navy stunner with a multicolor floral print and halter straps that tie behind the neck. It's flattering to all bust sizes because of the ruching!

This fitted, empire waist dress ties at the back of the neck and has fabric flower appliqués at the neckline. I love the color of the dress atop a tan and I think this cut is quite flattering to all shapes.
Vivienne Tam Silk Jersey Halter Dress, $425, is a 100% silk, modern version of a kimono. This bright colored halter dress also ties at the neck, has a wrap around belt as well as built in bust pads for lift and comfort...no bra necessary!
Forever 21 Retro Halter Dress is $32.80 and though it's a bit retro, picture this with a great brown woven belt and sexy wedges. This halter dress features ruched detailing at the bust, a pointed waist line and satin retro print skirt.

Designer Spotlight: Nieves Lavi

Lately I just can't get enough of the truly original print dresses by Nieves Lavi. The label was founded by fashion veterans Sam Nieves Velez and Sharon Lavi, both of whom cut their teeth as senior designers at Herve Bernard and also spent time at Anna Sui and Vera Wang, respectively. The pair's fun and funky print dresses and tops are spun from 100 percent silk and have just a slight retro edge with their classic, chic shapes. My favorite part about the exotic yet modern designs are the unexpected color combinations, which are surprising and wholly satisfying. Here's a look at some of my favorite Nieves Lavi pieces in stores right now.

The Perfect Plant For Black Thumbs: African Spear Plant

Granted, Anthropologie's exclusive Nieves Lavi silk print dress, which was featured on the Anthropologie Facebook page, is quite lovely. But what I adore even more is the chic styling of this photo and the unusual plant peeking out behind the model. The plant in question is sometimes called African spear plant, or sansevieria cylindrica. What you need to know, however, is that this plant is one of the easiest houseplants you can add to your home.

I bought my sansevieria cylindrica plant from Flora Grubb Gardens over a year ago, and it resides on the top of our very tall record shelves, which makes it rather inaccessible. This means that I usually forget to water it. And guess what? This sansevieria cylindrica plant doesn't seem to care. It's survived and thrived through poor watering and care, nonoptimal light conditions, and general inattention to its houseplant needs.

I can't recommend sansevieria cylindrica enough for those of you who think that you're incapable of keeping a houseplant alive. This one will not disappoint you. Even if you forget to water it for a couple months (as I have), it will survive your poor care. Black thumbs? Bring 'em on!
