Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti Fall 2012

There was a cinematic kind of drama to the Fall 2012 collection of Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti. First, the elegant setting - Avery Fisher Hall, which is home to New York's Philharmonic Orchestra, was built in the '60s and reflects midcentury form in a warm palette of cream, brass, and wood. Cue the orchestral soundtrack, and finally the models, who came up a weirdly chic escalator and walked the eternally long hall only to disappear down the other escalator. It felt a little bit like the end of a movie, playing over and over again. If that's the case, the heroine we would imagine to be a very elegant woman from the 1960s with a taste for sparkle on her pert shirt collars, lucite belts to cinch her tailored skirt suit, and a fur jacket encased in plastic (in case it rains). It was as if last season's cute '60s girl, who wore shades of pink and purple and yellow with aplomb, grew up, got a job, married rich, maybe had an affair (we're thinking of Tilda Swinton in the beautifully shot Milan-based film I Am Love), and saw her tastes evolve a bit - still feminine, but a lot more elegant.

Trends: Ladylike, sparkly embellishments, skirt suits, monochromatic dressing, lucite, plastic, '60s elegant.
Colors: Gray, cream, nude, camel.
Key Piece: Any of the tops with sparkly collars, a beautiful ombré camel coat.
Accessories: Lucite belts, chic little briefcases, silver-tipped stilettos.
Who Would Wear It: Sophisticated, feminine dressers with a taste for unusual details.

2011 Fall New York Fashion Week: Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti

It was the Italian version of Mad Men's Betty Draper, a bucolic vision of retro girlishness without Betty's dark neurosis. It model Arizona Muse opened the show in a pink coat and dress, and that began a collection of girly but prim clothes in candy shades of pink, yellow, mint, and lavender. Details like lace, floral applique, and pleats gave the collection youth, and tailored coats and bright furs would be wearable in today's world with jeans and a sweater. It was a very pretty collection, almost cinematic in feel thanks to the Italian soundtrack and saturated hues.

Trends: Lace, '60s ladylike, skirtsuits, peacoats.
Colors: Girlish pink, lavender, mint, canary yellow.
Key Looks: A collarless camel coat, the detailed knit dresses.
Accessories: Satin mary janes added to the sweetness.
Who Would Wear It: '60s fans and girly girls will eat this up.

Fab Finding Followup: Tea Time!

I don't consider myself a girlie girl, but I do enjoy the occasional tea party. Last weekend, my friend graciously hosted one at her place and all I needed to do was arrive looking as fresh as the scones. On Our Radar: Net-a-Porter Transitions Into Fall

The transitioning weather has left me nonplussed. For the past couple weeks, I've found myself standing in front of my closet longer then I would like - I don't know what to wear. It's not exactly freezing outside, but I can't pull off bare legs. So what's a girl to do?

On Our Radar: Women Choose Shoes Over Bags

Can it be? Have shoes replaced bags as the hottest fashion item? If so, I'm not complaining. I have a growing collection of bags, but as of late, I've become quite bored of the options out there. But the Spring shoe department, which houses such rarities as this MIu Miu Cutout Harlequin Bootie ($890), is a whole different story.

It seems the trend of naming bags after models and celebrities is now being used on footwear. Giambattista Valli has created a Victoria shoe in honor of Mrs. Beckham, while Calvin Klein made a Suri shoe, named after Tom Cruise's daughter. Also, unusual designs and materials used on bags is now being used on footwear. If that's not proof enough, department store Harvey Nichols has reported a 15 percent rise in shoe sales this season and a higher demand for runway heels. Adversely, a recent survey has forecast an 18 percent drop in handbag sales. It's also being predicted that women will soon spend more money on expensive shoes than bags. Do you buy it?

Style For Style: Shower Steam Your Clothes

It would be nice if every household had a garment steamer but the reality is that the majority don't. So then what is a girl to do when she has a fabulous cocktail party to attend and her Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti Satin Strapless Dress, $995, is all wrinkled? Yes, an old fashioned iron might do the trick, but sometimes a fabric is too delicate for that. Plus, your lackluster ironing skills may burn a hole in your lovely dress. Oh no!

Chances are you're going to shower before you head to your soiree, right? While you're getting clean, your wrinkly dress can get...well, unwrinkly. All you have to do is hang your darling frock somewhere in the bathroom while you shower. The idea is to let the steam from your shower permeate the dress, much like a garment steamer. There you have it; a garment steaming process without the bulky machine!

DIY: Make a Sequin-Collar Top!

We love a sparkly collar, most recently seen on the Spring runways including Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti, and on celebs like Hailee Steinfeld and Diane Kruger, so we decided to re-create this look. It's an easy way to update a top you already own, and it's an affordable way to try out the trend. All you need is a cotton top with a collar, sequin trim (have fun with color!), Aleene's Jewel-It glue, pins, and scissors - so simple, right? Make sure you let your top dry overnight once you're done, and remember to hand wash it gently so that the sequin trim doesn't come off. Hue Knew? Shades of Blue and Green Work Magic Together

Turquoise, mint green, blue-green - these are the hues we're excited about right now. Whether it's a monochromatic look a la Rihanna in Antonio Berardi, or a tonal look a la Diane von Furstenburg Fall 2011 runway, it's high impact and we love boldness of it for Fall. To pull it off after Labor Day, try mixing it with neutrals: these hues look fabulous with shades of gray, camel, or rust. Avoid pairing it with lighter colors like cream or pale yellow as it will feel too unseasonal for Fall dressing.
