Vivienne Westwood Fall 2012

If not for Vivienne Westwood, rocker chicks would have nothing to wear - and for Fall 2012, Westwood gives them plenty in the form of tulle, tartan, and t-shirts. Westwood always has a knack for wonderfully peculiar tailoring, in this case it's seen on sharp, angular blazers that look like origami structures and gigantic silhouettes, which for Fall are layered and oversized and bring to mind Mary-Kate Olsen during her "hobo-chic" phase. When it came to dressing up, Victorian-inspired sequin and marabou gowns were kept slightly unfinished, bringing a decidedly rugged, grunge-chic edge, and corseted coats were punctuated with sleek shadow-stripe silks. The collection wasn't presented without its share of showmanship, however; models rode bikes in girlie marabou dresses, carried bunches of blooms, and teetered on super-high platform heels down the runway. All in all, Vivienne Westwood's Fall '12 collection was a carefully curated and perfectly haphazard 17th-century soiree.

Marni designer Consuelo Castiglioni showed a world of colorblock, structured silhouettes, and small-scale prints for Fall 2012. '60s mod styling got a dose of Eastern influence on the runway - models were clad in bright shift dresses, trousers, and skirt suits, almost always topped with a boxy coat and cinched at the waist with wide leather belts. The designer also offered up slick coats in luxe exotic looks like python, patent leather, and plaid-print furs, which proved visually stunning alongside head-to-toe black and gold jacquard and floral-print ensembles. Hopefully, you haven't tired of the hosiery trend yet; white tights were layered under each look (even pants), then finished with Kabuki-style platform Mary Janes for a vaguely Oriental feel. Missoni Fall 2012

For Missoni's Fall 2012 collection, designer Angela Missoni was inspired by a mix of urban influences and an immersion in nature and landscape. According to show notes, the woman of Fall '12 is a "heroine in a concrete jungle," and conceives fashion as an "evocative adventurous fantasy" while maintaining a strong-willed, sophisticated yet sensitive vibe. The collection was, of course, loaded with Missoni's signature knits, but this time in a more subtle, less cognizant way - the zigzag print was evident in supertight trousers and knee-length tank dresses, but soon gave way to plaid wool and alternating geometric and amorphous patterns. This urban warrior woman was protected by elbow-length leather gloves, latex corsets, shiny metallic embellishments, as well as chunky, thin-tipped heels and boots, and carried chic square-shaped bags with chain straps and wood grain detailing. Overall, the Missoni girl is more than prepared to battle the elements of the concrete jungle come Fall.

Cold shoulders? Roksanda Ilincic's answer is a Fall 2012 collection of sheath dresses, tailored trousers, and slouchy sweatshirts all topped with fur trim. It's the modern girl's cold-weather wardrobe - complete with the most sophisticated play on buffalo plaid (yes, sophisticated plaid) we've ever seen embellished onto deep burgundy dresses and bold bright blue pencil skirts. Silhouettes too speak to that modern proportion - slouchier tops and slim-cut skirts. Nothing is too literal; while sporty references abound with hooded sweatshirts, relaxed trousers, or full jumpsuits, Roksanda counters with luxe fur trim on the same laid-back toppers. Ralph Lauren's Fall 2012 collection focused on proper English style, from dapper menswear to glamourous, turn-of-the-century evening dresses. The select crowd of fashion editors - many of whom rarely even crack a smile at these shows -literally squealed with delight when the music began: it was the soundtrack to the PBS series and obvious editor obsession Downton Abbey. That show centers on a well-to-do British family in 1912, and the collection sought to bring that time to life. The only thing missing from the menswear looks was a cigar and scotch; there were tweed and herringbone double-breasted jackets worn with jodhpurs, and fair isle sweaters with flannel trousers styled with newsboy caps. From there the collection moved to more feminine grounds with a series of ultra-luxe evening dresses, like a beautiful one-shoulder fuchsia satin gown and a black satin evening dress topped with a gold-painted ostrich feather cape. It was rich with vintage glamour and the classic themes Ralph Lauren is known for.

Tommy Hilfiger set the mood for his collection this evening at the Park Avenue Armory creating an Autumnal park paradise complete with wooden benches, pretty Fall trees, The Beatles playing in the backdrop, and even gravel to sink our booties into. As expected, the designer showcased his classic American style, but this time, interjected a completely modern spin to his mix via silk cable-knit printed dresses, luxe leather riding pants, and plenty of Glen plaid suits to go around. The classic pea coat was treated with a brilliant patent finish and trench coats received a smart colorblock detail on the sleeves. There were also plenty of quilted pieces, suede shirtdresses, A-line skirts, and tailored hunting jackets emoted a regal equestrian feel. Hilfiger exemplified the perfect mix of old and new - and we're loving every bit of it.
