There's preppy plaid, then there's punky plaid. Clearly fashionistaenit is the latter. I'm inspired by everything from her pose to her chunky bracelets, her husky bag to her clear glasses.

The Look For Less: A.L.C. Plaid Tux Pant

I've long been searching for the perfect plaid pant. A while back, Ashley Olsen wore this gorgeous blackwatch navy and green plaid coat that inspired me. A recent hunt yielded this A.L.C. Plaid Tux Pant ($298, originally $425). It's gorgeous, all right, but the price is killer. Luckily, I also found another plaid pant that can work for the preppy chic look I'm seeking.

I'm crushing hardcore on these Mango Forrest Trousers ($70). I love the subtle colors and the skinny, cropped fit. The zipper pockets are cool, too. I'm thinking, with the help of a silky top, fitted blazer, lace-up booties, and tan socks, they'll really come to life.

Trend Alert: Winter Retreat

It's bound to happen. Everyone starts to hibernate as the days get shorter and the temp gets colder. However, that's no excuse to dress drab. I suggest making your Winter retreat a fashionable one via buffalo plaid, sherpa-lined denim, laced boots, and boyfriend jeans. Think Paul Bunyan, or rather, Paulina Bunyan, when styling your warm warfare. Now, all I need is a cabin, fireplace, hot cocoa, and a snuggly stud muffin.

I have three, and counting. Even though little plaid jackets feel so right in the Winter, a lighter weight one, or a freshly colored one, can translate for Spring, too. Who's that girl in her LPJ? Why it's the always-adorable Christina Ricci. She teamed hers with skinny jeans, cat-eye sunnies, and a luscious gray Chanel bag. Not too shabby. A look that works for both the city and the country - and the road trip in between.

The reality starlet shopped on Melrose wearing an Elizabeth and James plaid shirt, black skinny jeans, and Louboutin pumps. Ray Ban Wayfarers shielded her from the paps, while her Alexander Wang bag stashed all her cash. Her look is a testament to the fact that simplicity can have a major impact.
