Compare & Contrast: Red Dress, Leopard Belt, Black Pumps

Red dress, leopard belt, black pumps - a killer combination both Rihanna and Elizabeth Banks recently took on. Fashion coincidence? The items are similar but the styling is vastly different. Rihanna is dressy and chic, while Elizabeth is more casual and sassy. Let's break their looks down shall we?

Rihanna: The singer chose a tomato red Monique Lhuiller Resort '09 dress at the Spirit of Life Awards dinner in LA. Very fancy-dinner appropriate.

Dress: So as not to be the average lady in red, she sought funkiness and got it with the origami detail bodice. The taffeta fabric elevates the look to black tie status.

Belt: The slim leopard belt breaks up the look and adds a touch of casual. Without it, the look would be too mature for Rihanna.

Shoes: The black satin pointy pumps maintain sophistication without distracting.

Elizabeth Banks: The actress wore a bold red square-neck mini dress to the MTV TRL studios in NYC. MTV appearances require lightheartedness and this delivered.

Dress: This dress is not nearly as elaborate as Rihanna's; it's equally modern, fun, and flattering.

Belt: This overly wide leopard belt distracts from the dress. Plus, it does nothing for her figure besides hide it.

Shoes: The black patent round-toe pumps save the look. They provide some much-needed shine.

If ever you're having a bad day, throw on a bright red dress and see how your mood turns around. Jessica Simpson has nothing to be sad about, but she still donned a red dress while in NYC. A loud dress doesn't require much accessorizing, but Jess jazzed up her look with a rosary, a cross, and stacked bangles. On her feet, she wore Frye's buckle sandals, and on her eyes, cool aviators. I'm sure there will be some red dresses in Jessica's upcoming dress collection.

Look of the Day: Little Red Dress

BarbroAndersen from Norway is the newest stylish member of our Look of the Day group - welcome! Her little red dress made me take notice because it's so whimsical, so girlie. For an opposite effect, she paired it with a black blazer, black leggings, and black shoes. Long live the LRD.

New York Fashion Week, Fall 2009: Heart Truth Red Dress Collection

Today was my first official full day of Fashion Week and I couldn't have kicked it off with a better show. The Heart Truth Red Dress Collection is a feel good show that benefits a good cause - heart disease in women. It was super fun because fearless celebrity females strutted their stuff in various red designer dresses. It was cool to see Vivica Fox sing down the runway in her super sparkly Jenny Packham gown, and gold medalist Nastia Liukin work it in a saucy BCBG LRD. These stars proved that you can make serious waves in a red dress. With a touching introduction by the beloved Tim Gunn, a parade of famous faces took the stage.Before I leave you, here are the four things you can do to prevent heart disease: eat right, be physically active, do not smoke, and keep your body weight low. I'm all about getting more bang for your buck. Why not invest in something that can be worn an infinite number of ways? Donna Karan's The Infinity Dress ($895) is one of those pieces you want to have in your closet. Just look below to see the fabulous things it can do. Yes, it's pricey, but when you consider that it can be worn at least 10 ways, it's not so bad. It also comes in red and pink, though black is sleekest. I can't choose a favorite - each one is more stylish than the last. And the jersey fabric means it's super comfortable, too.

The Look For Less: ABS Charmeuse Red Dress

The floral trend has been blooming for some time now and this ABS by Allen Schwartz Charmeuse red dress, $300, is a fab favorite. It may look familiar, as it reminded us of Nicole Kidman's red Balenciaga Oscars gown - remember? Although compared to many frocks out there right now it's not that expensive, it is still pretty pricey for something you'll probably only wear once or twice. Let's face it: with something this red and eye-catching, you don't want to be caught wearing it at every soiree.

This Bebe Silk Mesh Bubble Dress, $140, is nearly identical to the dress above. It has the bubble hem and the flowers at the nape of the neck, though they're not as prominent. It's not that much cheaper, but when you're working hard for the money, every penny counts!

Joe Perry played it rock 'n roll cool, Adam Lambert worked his slim suit, Ne-Yo looked spiffy in a two-tone blazer and fedora, Pete Wentz did his military thing, and Keith Urban opted for all black. No doubt, they all dressed to impress, but which stylin' male is most Fab?
