Kate Middleton Wears Green Mulberry to Attend a Reception With Prince William

Kate Middleton and Prince William made the rounds at a private reception hosted by Queen Elizabeth II in London today. The Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Charles, and members of the media also attended the event, which announced plans for the celebration of The Queen's Diamond Jubilee in 2012. Kate made her latest fashion statement in a green silk Mulberry number, despite having been beaten by Alexa Chung for the British Style Award at this evening's British Fashion Awards. Kate's wedding gown designer, Sarah Burton, did get recognized, though, with the Designer of the Year honor.

Prince William made an appearance after a particularly difficult weekend at work. William rescued shipwrecked sailors in the Irish Sea yesterday. He was the copilot of a helicopter that responded to the call, and William and his four-person team were able to save two lives. Meanwhile, William's brother, Harry, is focusing on his own military career. Prince Harry is back in the UK after spending two months in the US for helicopter training, including a stint in LA over the weekend.

Dries Van Noten Spring 2012

Dries Van Noten gave us a beautiful vision for Spring 2012, thanks to a myriad of photo prints that ranged from a turquoise sea to the twinkling lights of Las Vegas to idyllic painted landscapes rendered in monochromatic tones. These prints were collaged together on loose silk shifts, crisp white button-downs, and knee-length skirts, in a surprising vignette of beautiful things. Silhouettes weren't ignored though; Van Noten played with structure and volume, adding femininity to his slouchy-structured tailoring with peplum and thick, gorgeously rendered embroidery and lace.

Tell a Whale of Tale in Your Living Room

Whales, the gentle giants of the sea, are an au courant decorating motif, but these sweet sea creatures weren't always used in a benign manner when it came to home decorating. Starting in the mid-1700s, whalers would use whale bones, teeth, and baleen to create scrimshaw - engraved pictures and lettering etched into these animal parts.

Thankfully, scrimshaw is in no danger of becoming trendy again. Homages to the great whale, however, can be seen silk-screened on pillows, shaped into mobiles, or taking the form of furniture and accents. Get excited for Summer days on the coast with some whale additions to your home. I'm particularly loving this Whales Pillow ($34) created by artist and textile designer Lourdes Sánchez for West Elm. 2011 Fall New York Fashion Week: Rachel Roy

It was a textural mix 'n' match at Rachel Roy, whose looks seemed inspired by the street style just outside Lincoln Center. There was something for everyone - wool and lamé pants and mongolian wool vests for the bohemians, floral silk chiffon dresses for the romantics, matte charmeuse dresses for glamazons, and a cashmere blazer and tie-neck blouse for the working sophisticate. It was eclectic, but the fact that each look came together in a really polished way meant that the eclecticism not only worked, it actually focused the collection. Playing with texture and proportions - soft silk with boiled wool, a beaded tunic over a wool skirt - made for a richly layered collection that knew just when to stop before the hobo alarm went off.

Trends: Layering, apron dress, boho chic, beading, graphic prints.
Colors: Hunter green, garnet, royal blue, sea green, black, navy.
Key Looks: An autumnal floral long-sleeve dress layered under a sleeveless jacket and belted.

2011 New York Fall Fashion Week: Donna Karan

Donna Karan designed Fall for the kind of woman “who commands a room.” Now that might inspire visions of power suits, but fear not. Karan is talking about the kind of woman so confident and elegant she needn’t dress like a man to indicate her strength. Thus, structured silhouettes were softened by artful draping that accentuated curves but didn’t exploit them. Luxe fabrics were part diaphanous - iridescent silk chiffon, cupro satin - and part cozy - stretch wool jersey, long-haired shearling, mohair - making texture a major factor in the collection’s wearability and ease. Karan's woman also doesn't need red to be sexy; the soft palette of cream, blush, gray, and some iridescent sea green was intended to “evoke the glow of pearls on skin.” What a lovely and classy image, helped along by the models' pearl-bedecked necks. Rich accents like suede elbow-length gloves, micro pearls, sequins, and silk chiffon scarves worn as hoods added subtle glamour and reminded us that these are not just clothes for confident, classy women; they're for the kind of woman who has made it, too.

Trends: Draping, Fur.
Colors: Cream, blush, silver, sea green, gray.
Key Looks: The mohair skirts, a draped wool jersey dress that is totally delicious-looking.
Accessories: Silk chiffon scarves doubling as hoods, shearling satchels, suede gloves with shearling cuffs.

2011 Fall New York Fashion Week: Lela Rose

Lela Rose, known for her feminine cocktail dresses and bridal gowns, took an artful turn for Fall. Using the abstract paintings of Gerhard Richter as her inspiration, Lela applied graphic brushstrokes to sheath dresses and skirts. Even the combination of colors and textures - a sheer-paneled top sat above a wine-colored feathered skirt and knee-high socks - had a graphic motivation behind it. Lela's use of fabrics, which were pretty unto themselves, brought the artistic idea into focus, like veiled tulle that looked as if it had been brushed across the models' decolletage or the embroidered mohair and metallic silks that gave the collection a complex richness. There were simple highlights as well, including a sharp caramel-colored peacoat and a gorgeous camel coat with a sea green shell.

Trends: Graphic prints, brushstrokes, metallics, jacquard, feathers, sculpted shoulders.
Colors: Aubergine, sea green, camel, crimson, ombré.
Key Looks: A metallic floral organza full-length skirt paired with a simple cashmere crewneck sweater.
