Fab Tip: Play Shoulder Peek-a-Boo

The peek-a-boo effect always gets me. It's the ideal way to look sexy while retaining mystique. My favorite area to show off? My shoulders. But I've found that many cutout tops are too '80s for my taste. Hence, I came up with a way to get the peek-a-boo effect minus the cheese. The process involves using two items - one sleeveless tank, like this LOVE YAYA Glitz Top ($73, originally $145, left) and one off-shoulder top, like this Arden B. Basic Off Shoulder Top ($28, right). Confused? Read on.

To start . . .

Grab a sleeveless top. It can be high neck or low neck; both work. Note that mine, below, is a high neck.
Now take an off-shoulder long-sleeve top, preferably in a different fabric from your sleeveless top. This will make for maximum impact.
First wear your off-shoulder top.
Now throw on your sleeveless top over the off-shoulder top.
Flatten any bulges to make sure you look neat.
For a greater cutout, pull your off-shoulder top as far down as you wish. If you want a small peek-a-boo effect, pull the off-shoulder top slightly higher.

There was lots of shoulder love this year, as exemplified by Dita Von Teese in Vivienne Westwood. When picking the perfect party frock this season, show those shoulders. Whether it’s one-shoulder, off-shoulder, cutout, or puff sleeve dresses, allow the sculptured part of your body be the focus.

The Look For Less: Elizabeth and James One-Shoulder Tee

One shoulder tops are the absolute way to show off just the right amount of skin. And with Fall rearing its head, I see no other opportune way to sport this trend. I must share the exciting news: I found my New Year's outfit! OK, it doesn't involve a one shoulder top, but I bought one of those along the way. Back to New Year's: Be sure to look for it in my Look Book next year! As for the one shoulder top I got, it reminded me how sexy the bare shoulder can be, and this has got to be the perfect date or night-on-the-town top. So it may be a a bit disco . . . I've got disco fever.

Back in June, when I met Donna Karan, she did a lot of shoulder talk. Her gorgeous Fall collection consisted of two shoulder opposites: the structured shoulder and the cold shoulder. We've been seeing a lot of shoulder love thanks to celebrities like Victoria Beckham and Rihanna and due to designers Balmain and Marc Jacobs. And while superstars looks awesome in the regurgitated '80s silhouette, in the real world, it's a tad unwearable. That's where the cold shoulder comes in. The Bag To Have: Marc Jacobs Flap Shoulder Bag

I was minding my own business, just casually browsing Barneys' website (research right?), when I suddenly ran into this Marc Jacobs Flap Shoulder Bag, on sale for $359 (originally $539). Now, you know I'm partial to anything MJ so it's no big surprise that I stopped off at his section. What excited me beyond belief was the red font indicating a sale!

Fall is months away but true fashionistas are already preparing their closets for the crunchy leaves and gloomier weather. This flap bag is incredibly right for the upcoming season; it's utilitarian in size and has just the right amount of adornments (the gold chain and signature pushlock).

What really attracted me to this particular MJ is that it's simple and hardcore at the same time. The chain link gives it some pizazz but unlike the Stam and other Fall bags, it retains some down-to-earth-ness. A round of applause to Marc for yet another handbag well done - clap, clap clap!
