Mixing Metallics: Try Gold Shadow With Silver Polish

There used to be this rule that you couldn't mix your silvers with your golds (particularly pertaining to jewelry), but Katy Perry proves that there's a way to do it right. At yesterday's European premiere for Arthur, Katy mixed her metallics, wearing a silver-toned manicure with golden eye shadow on her lower lash lines and gold rings on her ring finger. The key is to not overdo it on either shade, so that the mismatched metallics play nicely off each other. I discovered this silver tray of mine in the back of my kitchen cabinet, hiding behind some cookie sheets I never use. I'd totally forgotten I owned it. Not only was it frighteningly tarnished when I discovered it, but it was also dirty and had dozens of ring marks on it. I'd used it in the past to stash mail and keys in my foyer, and after one wild party it wound up completely trashed. I was worried I might have to send it to a professional but tried polishing it myself first. After spending a good 30 minutes scrubbing away at the thing with nearly half a jar of Gorham Anti-Tarnish Silver Polish, it shined like the top of the Chrysler building!

Don't:

Don't put your silver in the dishwasher! The heat and harsh detergents can cause the silver to whiten, the patinas to be removed, black spots to appear, and the blades of knives to be damaged.
Don't cut food on silver trays or plates. Knives will damage the silver, not to mention decrease its value.
Don't wash silverplated items too vigorously; this can cause the plating to be removed.
Don't store your silver in a humid environment.

Do:

Do use polishes created specifically for silver if your silver is very tarnished.
Do hand-wash with warm water.
Do use a phosphate-free detergent that's not lemon-scented.
Do dry immediately using a soft cotton towel.
Do empty silver salt shakers immediately; salt is very corrosive.
Do ask questions. If you have someone else clean your silver for you, make sure you know their methods and solutions.

Casa Quickie: Try Toothpaste

Out of silver polish? In a pinch? You can use white toothpaste to clean the tarnish off your silver instead! Just run the silver under warm water and work the paste into a foam and then rinse it off. Since the toothpaste is more abrasive than polish, a little goes a long way - you don't need to use much. And, if there are any stubborn black spots in nooks and crannies, you can actually use a toothbrush (an old one) to get rid of them.
